CDC Director: Most US Omicron Infections Are ‘Mild’

Quote:Most Omicron COVID-19 cases reported in the United States are experiencing mild symptoms so far, said Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director Rochelle Walensky on Thursday.

“The disease is mild,” Rochelle Walensky told The Associated Press in an interview, noting that symptoms include cough, congestion, and fatigue.

No Omicron-related deaths have been reported in the United States or around the world to date. One person in the United States has been hospitalized so far.

The Delta COVID-19 variant still accounts for most of the cases in the United States, officials said.

About 40 cases have been reported in the United States after it was first named by the World Health Organization (WHO) late last month. Most of the American cases are young adults, and about a third recently traveled internationally, the CDC told AP.

“What we generally know is the more mutations a variant has, the higher level you need your immunity to be … We want to make sure we bolster everybody’s immunity. And that’s really what motivated the decision to expand our guidance,” Walensky said.

More than three-quarters of those patients had been vaccinated, and a third had boosters, Walensky said. Boosters take about two weeks to reach full effect, and some of the patients had received their most recent shot within that period, CDC officials said.

Some Omicron cases can become increasingly severe as days and weeks pass, she said, adding that the data is an early, first glimpse of U.S. omicron infections. The earliest onset of symptoms of any of the first 40 or so cases was Nov. 15, according to the CDC.

According to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, 337 Omicron cases have been confirmed in the European Union, and about 1,458 cases have been reported worldwide as of Dec. 8.

The Omicron variant was first identified in South Africa last month and has since been reported in 57 countries, according to the World Health Organization.

Despite Omicron’s apparent mild nature, the variant threw the world into a panic. The United States, European Union, and other countries imposed fresh travel restrictions after the strain was named, while some heads of state said that new lockdown measures would be needed.

For example, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced so-called “plan B” measures for England over the Omicron variant. That includes new work-from-home measures, the extension of a mask mandate, COVID-19 vaccine passports being required for certain businesses, and more regulations.

Walensky’s comments to AP, meanwhile, come as the CEO of Netcare, a South African healthcare system, said most COVID-19 Omicron patients in Gauteng are mild don’t need oxygen, noting that’s a change from previous outbreaks.

“While we fully recognize that it is still early days, if this trend continues, it would appear that with a few exceptions of those requiring tertiary care, the fourth wave can be adequately treated at a primary care level,” Netcare CEO Richard Friedland said, according to broadcaster News24.

South African officials are “seeing breakthrough infections of people who have been vaccinated, but the infections we’re seeing are very mild to moderate,” Friedland previously told Bloomberg News. “So for health care workers who have had boosters, it’s mostly mild. I think this whole thing has been so poorly communicated and so much panic generated.”

CDC: Zero Omicron Deaths in U.S., Only One Person Needed Hospitalization

Quote:The CDC confirmed today that the Omicron variant of COVID-19 has killed precisely zero people in the U.S., with only one case requiring hospital treatment.

As BBN News reports, the Centers For Disease Control has revealed “there were no deaths associated with the Omicron coronavirus variant in the country so far.”

In addition, only one of the 43 cases detected “with initial follow-up” needed hospital care.

The health body also revealed that “many of the first reported cases of Omicron variant infection appear to be mild,” a conclusion which is very much in line with evidence gathered globally.

Out of the 43 cases, eight people had not been vaccinated while 14 had been double vaccinated, meaning the total of people who had received either a single or double dose and caught the variant was 35 out of 43.

The CDC’s announcement once again underscores how global panic over the new variant is completely inconsistent with its mild severity.

As we reported earlier, experts in South Africa continue to share the “positive” news that the Omicron variant of COVID-19 isn’t causing a spike in deaths.

“Hospital data show that Covid-19 admissions are now rising sharply in more than half of South Africa’s nine provinces, but deaths are not rising as dramatically and indicators such as the median length of hospital stay are reassuring,” reported the Telegraph.

As we highlight below, the UK is set to impose even more draconian measures to deal with the variant as the country moves towards yet another disastrous lockdown.

CDC: Most reported US Omicron cases have hit the people who are fully vaccinated

Quote:According to a U.S. report published on Friday, the majority of the 43 COVID-19 cases caused by the Omicron variant identified in the United States so far were in people who were fully vaccinated, and one-third of them had received a booster dose.

According to Reuters, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United States reported that 34 of the 43 cases attributed to the Omicron variant had been fully vaccinated. Fourteen of them had also received a booster shot, though five of those cases occurred within 14 days of the additional shot before full protection kicked in.

Reupping this crucial news about how mild Omicron appears to be

Quote:In case you weren’t reading the stack last night, these two charts will tell you all you need to know. Covid cases have completely decoupled from deaths in South Africa in the last month.

Cases are on the verge of setting an all-time high:

[Image: https%3A%2F%2Fbucketeer-e05bbc84-baa3-43...0x1334.png]

Deaths, not so much. They are as low as they have been since South Africa’s epidemic started 18 months ago.

[Image: https%3A%2F%2Fbucketeer-e05bbc84-baa3-43...0x1334.png]

Of course, some delay between case spikes and rising deaths is normal. But with all previous variants, a surge this big would have led to a notable rise in deaths by now.

Omicron appears different. In the best possible way. Unless you’re Pfizer or Moderna’s CEO.

Interesting pattern in that top graph.

Seems every six month give/take we see a spike in cases. Middle of Summer and depths of Winter.

Guess we can toss the masks in spring and fall going forward.

Omicron: such a joke that South Africa is about to dump all contact tracing and quarantines

Quote:Yes, the scientists advising the government of South Africa - where Omicron is now the dominant strain - say tracing and quarantining the contacts of infected people is a waste of time.

This cool-headed advice is exactly the opposite of the panic in wealthy European countries (and certain blue states).

Of course - unlike wealthy European countries - South Africa has tens of millions of extremely poor people. It can no longer afford to engage in viral theater to satisfy public health fanatics over a strain that looks more and more like a cold.

The prospect of nationwide food riots will tend to concentrate the mind.

Even if all OMG-icron did was cause a zit on your a$$, we would be told it is the plague of the 21st century and that we need to take their vaccine to save everyone.

No One Is Scared of Omicron and Even Some Doctors are Shrugging It Off

Quote:You’re getting an unexpected Christmas gift this year, and surprisingly it’s from the COVID-19 virus itself. You’ll be happy to know that it’s gone through the steps many other viruses take and has become highly contagious but far less deadly than its original variant.

But this isn’t new news, which is why few people actually seem to be afraid of it. According to a recent poll from Axios-Ipsos, the fear is more or less abated and Christmas is going to see family gatherings across the nation. The Daily Caller broke down the poll results:

When it comes to their own holiday plans, though, those surveyed were less likely to support big changes. Only 23% of respondents said they plan to cancel holiday travel plans, and 28% said they plan to stop gathering with people outside their household. One-third said they will stop eating at indoor restaurants. Sixty-two percent did say they would likely mask up in indoor settings due to Omicron.

As of now, Omicron is definitely making its way across America and swiftly, but according to reports the symptoms of Omicron are incredibly mild, mirroring the common cold more than a ravaging virus according to a ZOE COVID Symptoms Study.

According to the CDC, COVID-19 deaths are set to soar by a whopping 73 percent, however, the doctor who originally discovered Omicron thinks everyone is overreacting to the virus. In an interview with Spiked Online, GP, and chair of the South African Medical Association, Angelique Coetzee, thinks you should still practice masking up and social distancing, but thinks the world needs to be calmer about Omicron.

Coetzee noted Omicron’s symptoms are body aches, headache, fatigue, and possibly a scratchy throat with a dry cough, but no loss of smell or taste or a need for oxygen.

“Most of our patients have these mild symptoms. Vaccinated patients have them as well, but the myalgia, headache, and tiredness are not as severe for them as they are among the unvaccinated,” Coetzee said.

(READ: Reports Show Omicron Is the Least Severe Variant of COVID-19 Yet)

The Director of the Center for HIV Cure Research at the Gladstone Institutes in San Francisco, Warner Greene, sees the mild nature of Omicron as a good thing, hoping that it pushes Delta out as the predominant COVID-19 variant.

(READ: Joe Biden’s Latest Message on COVID Should Anger You)

“It would be a great thing if, in fact, omicron crowded out delta. If omicron was a less pathogenic virus,” said Greene.

To boot, in South Africa where it’s thought to originate, Omicron hospitalizations are falling rapidly according to Bloomberg:

Only 1.7% of identified Covid-19 cases were admitted to hospital in the second week of infections in the fourth wave, compared with 19% in the same week of the third delta-driven wave, South African Health Minister Joe Phaahla said at a press conference.

It should be made clear that Omicron is still in its early stages, but if the mild nature of the virus stays constant then you might be facing down the threat of a cold if you catch Omicron.

With the virus this mild, it’s likely that the fear of COVID-19 will fall along with hospitalization rates, effectively making the fear of the virus just as done as the pandemic.

Tripled Vaxxed 4.5 Times More Likely to Test Positive For Omicron Than Unvaxxed

Quote:According to figures released by the UK government via the Office for National Statistics, people who are triple vaxxed are 4.5 times more likely to test positive for Omicron than those who are unvaccinated.

The numbers also illustrate how the double-vaccinated are 2.3 times more likely to be infected with Omicron than those who haven’t taken any jabs.

The data, which is summarized by the Daily Sceptic’s Will Jones in this article, bolsters assertions that the Omicron variant is effective at evading vaccines.

“Note that this is the probability of an infection being Omicron given a person is infected, so it doesn’t tell us how likely a person is to test positive in the first place,” writes Jones.

“This means it doesn’t tell us that the vaccines are making things worse overall, only that they are making it much more likely that a vaccinated person is infected with Omicron than another variant. In other words, it is a measure of how well Omicron evades the vaccines compared to Delta. The fact that the triple-vaccinated are much more likely to be infected with Omicron than the double-vaccinated confirms this vaccine evading ability.”

[Image: 221221-Omicron-infection-by-vaxx-status-ONS.jpg]

Jones concludes from the data that, “The current Omicron outbreak is largely an epidemic of the vaccinated and is being driven, not by the unvaccinated, but by those who have been double and triple jabbed.”

The numbers completely demolish claims that the Omicron outbreak is a ‘pandemic of the unvaccinated’.

As Will Jones also documents in this piece, claims that NHS hospitals are being overwhelmed by the unvaccinated aren’t backed by any actual evidence.

Despite this, over the weekend UK Health Secretary blasted unvaccinated people for taking up hospital beds, telling them they “must really think about the damage they are doing to society.”

UK scientists will today present evidence that the Omicron variant is milder than previous strains of COVID-19, something that health experts in South Africa have been saying for weeks.
