I guess rich boosters are behind all of this.

How else could schools cough up say 100M for a FB coach?

RE: OT College Football Going Mad
I think Michigan State is kind of to blame for all these sudden money being thrown around. When you take a guy like Tucker who has done basically....nothing, and pay him like he is Nick Saban, Dabo Swinney, Urban Myer etc. then any guy who has accomplished more than him is going to want a big pay raise. Tucker had one losing season at Colorado, an awful first year at MSU (which you can kind of put aside because of the COVID season if you want), and then this year which was a great year for MSU. Even though they went 10-2 they could have very easily been 8-4 or even 7-5, and you are going to pay him $9.5M a year? Hopefully it works out for them, but that seems very risky.

RE: OT College Football Going Mad
Its all about status and power. For years schools have been building more and more elaborate facilities. Waterfalls and TV studios and monuments to how awesome these teams are. Now hiring away coaches for enormous contracts is the flex on other schools. LSU just hired the winningest coach from one of the greatest CFB programs of all time. Alabama hasnt done that. TAMU hasnt done that.

This is probably backwards if I had to guess. Tucker probably got an offer from one of the powerhouses and gave MSU the chance to match.

Sad how these AD's can pull nearly $100 million out of thin air from donors but others have to cut entire programs and in turn, scholarship opportunities.

The ND coach traded a good contract for a better one.

Yes, donor money at BIG, POWERFUL, etc. programs can raise those kind of sums from very rich donors.

As we know from the political dialogue there are many, many billionaires. Got this from the Internet.

So ANY of these 614 billionaires could do what we see at MSU, LSU, etc.

A hundred million is a lot of money so one better be a billionaire...02-13-banana

614 billionaires
The combined net worth of the 2020 class of the 400 richest Americans was $3.2 trillion, up from $2.7 trillion in 2017. As of October 2020, there were 614 billionaires in the United States.

I will refer you back to Scripture...

These people will need to face that judgement.

The term "eye of a needle" is used as a metaphor for a very narrow opening. ... The New Testament quotes Jesus as saying that "it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God".

Understood. I sometimes refer to religion academically (philosophically) without expressing an opinion one way or another.

Here is a better example: It was said by a theologian but is a common part of our philosophical moorings.

"People also ask
Who said the night is darkest just before the dawn?
The English theologian and historian Thomas Fuller appears to be the first person to commit the notion that 'the darkest hour is just before the dawn' to print. His religious travelogue A Pisgah-Sight Of Palestine And The Confines Thereof, 1650, contains this view: It is always darkest just before the Day dawneth."

I can argue with Dan about players getting paid and how the relaxed transfer rules could ruin NCAA football, but I would appear nonsensical and feckless if I were to say this coaching situation is acceptable. When a college coach like Kelly leaves his team while still in contention for the CFP playoff, college sports has a REAL problem.

The only thing that makes this more OK for me is that players have more freedom to move now.
