Let this sink in….
Tubby Smith is the best coach the Tigers have had in the past 12 years. I’m not a Tubby fan at all. This is just a sad fact about our program. In that 12 years, we’ve had numerous top 20 recruiting classes (including two number 1 classes), 3 NCAA appearances (with a grand total of 1 win), and an NIT championship which allowed us to run around and chant “We’re number 69! In these 12 years we’ve finished Every. Single. Season ranked lower than when the season started (which means not ranked at all).

So a team that wins the NIT is worse than a team that did not get in the NIT?

Gotcha... 03-drunk

You do know that recruiting IS a big part of coaching ? Probably the most important part.

Tubby was a genius coach, his players were just too disobedient.

Precisely. You can't win an NIT title without a roster stuffed with 4-stars and 5-stars.

Let this be a lesson to all the kids out there. Don't huff industrial cleaning products and post.

P.S. KJ Lawson did nothing wrong. Tubby looked down on Memphis the entire time while underperforming to a staggering degree and some of you want to celebrate him for it.

OMG! You must be kidding, right? Tubby the best coach since Cal? He couldn't get Memphis kids to come to Memphis. He might be a great tactician (or was some time ago), but not a great overall college coach now, or when he was here. Just MHO.

What's Tubby's team doing now? He's still coaching, right?

Tubby pulling upsets like Rick Pitino?

As a bench coach, Tubby was very good. As a recruiter or PR guy, he was terrible.

I mean, last year he coached up the zero stars he recruited at High Point into at least half-stars.

Right. Not sure why so many people have a hard time with that?

He was past his prime and wasn't willing to do the PR/recruiting work. He should have never been hired.

I don't know a lot about Tubby, but I was told that he never even contacted the biggest boosters of the basketball team. I think that was referring to the big donors which would probably include Bill Laurie, Fred Smith and the likes of those people. Also, in looking back at his tenure, the recruiting was pretty bad. In fact, he did not recruit himself and left it to his assistants. There were also a lot of questions as the the credentials of his assistants, especially his son. Then there was the Lawson situation. I just think Memphis was a bad fit for him. Lots of bad decision making.

OK- so I can buy that he might have done more with less. He was able to get as much talent out of the limited talent that he had. But it was his fault that he had less.

Pastner underachieved with his talent, but made the tournament and made it past the first round.

So far** Penny has underachieved with his talent and has yet to make the tournament.

I'd argue that Pastner was probably our best coach in the last 10 years. Penny has the highest ceiling.

Tubby was a good coach - just not a good recruiter.
