I feel better about the team right now than I did after Hopson’s 6- and 7-win seasons.

We know what we have. We have weapons. We just need a QB that can use those weapons and now we have a different skill set from players that are not QBs.

Not to mention about emergency preparedness in the state of MS:

posted this on another thread but this says it all:

USM went to a Wildcat (nicknamed it Superback) the last 3 games of the season and it was probably some of our better production on the season. In our first 9 games with a traditional QB we averaged 13.7 points a game. We switched to the Superback offense in the final 3 (@UTSA, @LT, FIU) and we averaged 29.7 points a game

USM had 11 players attempt a pass on the season and our RB Frank Gore Jr. was the only player that attempted a pass who had more TDs than INT on the season

QBs on THE SEASON
1 - Lange was (FR) 79 of 137 with 5 TD and 6 INT
2 - Lowe (SO) was 33 of 65 with 3 TD and 4 INT
3 - Keyes (FR) was 23 of 42 with 1 TD and 2 INT
4 - Webb (FR) was 4 of 11 with 0 TD and 2 INT
5 - Smithhart (SR) was 0 for 1 with 0 TD and 0 INT
6 - Goldstein (SO) was 0 for 1 with 0 TD and 1 INT
TOTAL FOR QBS was 139 of 257 (54%) with 9 TD and 15 INT

- RB Gore (FR) was 10 of 16 with 4 TD and 1 INT
- DB Willis (FR) was 9 of 11 with 1 TD and 1 INT
- RB Pittman (FR) was 1 of 1 with 0 TD and 0 INT
- RB Richard (FR) was 1 of 1 with 0 TD and 0 INT
- WR Caston (SO) was 0 of 1 with 0 TD and 0 INT
TOTAL FOR NON QBS was 21 of 30 (70%) with 5 TD and 2 INT

Would USM seriously consider going to the Superback offense long term? I know it was used through necessity this year, but I love the variety of college football and this could be a niche y'all exploit. A dynamic running offense that can pass just enough to keep defenses guessing seems intriguing to me.

No he said he wouldn't do that, but it should be part of the overall package.

Our final two games RB Gore was our best passer while WR Demarcus Jones turned into our best runner:

Gore: 8-13, 4 TD, 1 INT, 17 rushes for 70 yards and 3 TDs
Jones: 24 rushes, 179 yards

We started with Lowe and Keyes. But I'm thinking if we had started with the superback offense we would have had a winning season or atleast had more than 3 wins. Just don't know how you pull the trigger on something like that with good QBs on your roster

After this year I'm thinking we should look at the defenses we face and come up with a completely different offense just to throw their planning out the window.

Maybe a mix of

Wishbone
Option
West Coast
Raid Offense
Hurry up Offense
Ball Control

Get really good at mixing it up maybe you do all of them in a game.

Like you are saying who knew Gore would be a good QB and a WR would be a good Running back?

We're with y'all on that. I think that I hear a sigh of relief. What a good feeling for South fans, a conference foe/brother only 80 miles away. South and Southern, a great pair.

I enjoyed the short drive down and ate a burger and had a beer before this year's game at a pub across the street from campus- I can't remember the name, but it was good. Of course then we played the game, not so good. I've been to South for basketball games before as well and I'm looking forward to weekend baseball. It's really a good pairing.

I think Keyes could run that offense pretty well. He has the running and passing ability. I think it was a necessity this year with how bad our OLine was. We needed those extra TE/FB blockers just to do anything. I’ve heard that Hall has hit the transfer portal, JUCO ranks pretty hard to find some more game ready OL talent (like how we found our star LB/DE from SELU this past year).
