RE: Norfolk State - GAME 6
Too many missed 3 balls- 30 percent would have been okay as I thought. Sims had a great chance to end the game but just missed. A real shame then Mike dribble off leg. They got us there, need to finish. Norfolk played a good game and played tough defense. Very physical team to deal with.

I do think that Thomas looked good out there. Heck, him and Shy may be okay at times. Thomas is a great passer.

The team was at it’s best offensively when they spaced well and kicked or drove it strong. Sims gets a hard time a lot here but actually did a better job today of driving and finding teammates. He had some nice assists.

RE: Norfolk State - GAME 6
We played our best when our actual PG's were on the floor. Playing Sims and Okauru at the end of the game, with no true PG, led to one on one hero ball as Sims and Okauru took every shot over the last four minutes and UNCW was outscored 12-4. Sims was 1-5 and Okauru 2-2 over the last four mintues, with Okauru dribbling off his foot during a crucial play that basically ended the game.

Completely perplexed why Phillips, Thomas and Harvey pretty much stayed on the bench during the final four minutes when we had a chance to seal the win.

The Q&A is enlightening.

I am still scratching my head over Coach's comfort level of Simms playing point. Simms strikes me as many things, but point guard is not one of them.

Yes, some strange line-ups last night. Seemed to work through much of the game though. Hawks played hard with some defensive intensity and Okauru had a nice game--marred by the late turnover. Thomas was impressive and got a lot of well-deserved minutes. Baker showed some inside offense. The student section was pretty active and helped with the energy level. Really need to learn to finish as this turned out to be a winnable game that was lost in the final minutes.

RE: Norfolk State - GAME 6
He wanted to see Shy off the ball, so that is the explanation. Sims is going to draw the best player on the other team and likely get help so if he can make the correct read, I’m okay with it. Somebody needs to effectively make team plays. He made some terrific passes/ assists last night that were right on the money so that was cool to see. And, I was okay with Sims trying to win the game too. We have needed him to step up and be that guy- just didn’t work out. It should not have come down to the end.

It was nice to see Shy nail the 3 and for Thomas and him to play together at times. The team actually did some good things last night but another bad start to each half was a killer.

It was good to see them look for Harvey for the 3. He is growing into his new role a little at a time as are the other guys.

Interesting that he said he put Sims at the point to get Phillips used to scoring off the ball, but when it mattered at the end, Sims didn't get anyone involved because he took all the shots.

Sims plays better with the ball in his hands and can score at all 3 levels. It’s a problem to deal with defensively. You have to be willing to be the man. I applaud him. We need that from our best offensive player and a senior. He was right there too, that stick back should have gone for him. Heck, he got fouled a few trips earlier but still made the shot. That was a ton of contact and he needs to keep drawing it.

What you have to this point is a team that cannot sustain effort to get stops and I see that as the way for them to win . They are small and don't shoot the ball great so it will have to be over the top effort on defense if they are going to win games . Just not a lot of players who can actually make plays or open shots for that matter .

RE: Norfolk State - GAME 6
I'm okay with Sims doing a lot of things. I think it's a bad idea for him to run the point WHILE trying to do all the other things too. We have two very good and able PGs that can facilitate and while defensive bodies are all over Sims because he's our "late moment" guy, can potentially find another open man for easier points. That's the point of playing team basketball.

I like Sims, but IMO, the coaches have to be smarter about getting the entire team involved. Phillips, Thomas and Harvey on the bench for so long at the end of the game was an awful decision. Sims is a helluva player, but he's not a guy who can just 1v5 another team. As a matter of fact, we don't have ANY player who can do that.

I'm okay with playing Phillips off the ball to see how that changes things, but if by "off the ball" coach means "on the bench"... that's a big time problem.

Bill is right about his 2nd and 3rd shots. They were good looks and had they gone in, we would have been up 1 at that point. Instead, Norfolk got the ball back and score putting us down 3. The proceeding turnover sealed our fate.

The biggest frustration with Sims was his 1st shot when we were up 1. It was incredibly early in the shot clock and simply didnt need to happen. Even if the shot clock was about to expire, you take a shot clock violation and don't get them that opportunity to score in transition. That decision ultimately led to our loss last night.

Hopefully we learn and move on

Disagree completely. Sims has been here going on five years and I've never seen him finish a game for the W. But I have seen him try to finish and be that guy, and not come through time after time. On the other hand, I can distinctly remember guys like Denzel Ingram, Blizzard, etc. who everyone in the building knew was going to take the clutch shots and finish. Sims is a decent player, but he's not the guy you want with the ball in a must score situation. I don't know if we have that guy, but we'll never know if we keep going back to Sims at Okauru at the end. I'd like to see what Phillips and Harvey could do at this point, because what we have ain't working. Coming up just short is still losing.

He has been the freaking man too. Delaware at home first game and Troy as well. Someone needs to be the guy, it should be him. He just needs to look in the mirror and realize that he is Jaylen freaking Sims (Hoops Tranformer 1-5).

He also went for like 28 against ECTC. If y’all remember he was playing point forward in Troy Game all day and dominated for like 28 points.

You can still be "the guy" without dominating possessions. This offense needs a whole lot less dribbling and a whole lot more passing.

At this point "good looks" doesn't mean anything. We are dead last in the CAA in 3pt.%, dead last in FG%, next to last in FT%, and next to last in PPG. For a team full of guards, it's almost impossible to be this bad shooting the ball in every aspect...to include free throws, which is the best look you'll ever get. The only team nearly as bad on offense as we are is William and Mary, and they are awful.

Thank god for our defense, offensive rebounding and limiting turnovers or we'd be getting blown out. At some point we can't just keep hoping the "open looks" will fall. They're not, and I don't see any reason some light bulb will turn on and the shots will fall. If we were a great FT shooting team but weren't hitting from three, I might have some hope.

We have one player in the top 15 of the CAA in FG% at 48.9% and he's our PG. We have one player in the top 15 in FT%. We don't have a single player in the top 15 in 3pt% and we're the only team in the CAA without at least one.

These are D1 players so I can't imagine we recruited all the ones who can't shoot. IMO this is a half court scheme issue. We're seeing a few more picks at the top of the key, but there is still very little movement in getting cutters moving to the basket for easy layups. I don't remember who, but we had a guard make a great drive to the bucket, Kelly rolled to the basket with him and was wide open for a layup and wasn't even looked at. Our guard wasn't aware of or even looking for that pass. That's the kind of play we should be working on intentionally to improve our scoring, but it's obvious we're not. We're still pretty much a one on one offense. Until that changes, we're going to be a bad team.

Exactly. And near the end of the NS game, I actually saw some motion to get the ball to Sims and Okauru so they could get the pass going to the bucket off a pick, and it worked. Okauru went 2-2, then dribbled the ball off his foot on a huge posession. Sims was 1-4 doing the same.

What they need to do next is look for the pass when the post defender comes with help defense. Thomas made a GREAT pass to Kelly under the basket doing exactly that. And all Kelly had to do was go straight up to score. Not sure why it just happened in the NS game, or why we waited until the last four minutes of the game to run those plays.
