What a picture-perfect response on Twitter.

I hope we do well, but IMO, this is absolutely the wrong move. Perhaps I’ll eat some crow next year… 03-puke

I'll give him one game next year. Not looking at win/loss...purely at whether the style of play is identical to the last 4 years. If so, I'll be out.

JK’s job should also be on the line next year. What a lame-brained decision.

Just pathetic. Definitely going to effect recruiting and, most likely, the transfer portal. To claim progress because we won 4 games this year (and just barely won each of those games) vs. 3 games last year, ignores the reality that we only played 6 games last year. The on-field performance did not improve one iota. In fact, the defense and specialty teams got worse, as did our discipline (as penalties increased dramatically this year).

I'm beside myself. Awful decision. I can't believe the standard is so low that we keep a guy who has had four straight losing seasons.

RE: Bloomgren returning
I could tell at the Monday football radio show dinner a week ago they had been told they would be returning next year. Bloomgren and the assistant coach being interviewed were in great moods.

I am not surprised, and it is probably the right move. Coaching Rice football is a VERY difficult job, especially with the conference we are in (recruiting wise).

Nevertheless, he is very highly paid (by Rice standards), and we should expect results (though Rice apparently doesn't foot the bill for his salary).

Absolutely the wrong move even if you think he should be retained as he's left hanging with one-year left on his contract (with an extension). This is going to kill recruiting, and open the flood gates to the transfer pool.

If true, it's a gut punch to all but the very small number of Bloomgren supporters. I would have zero enthusiasm for 2022, and less than zero after the expected mass exodus through the portal, and the inevitably poor recruiting season.

Suppose he wins 8 next year. What does that tell us?

Does that tell us that he got lucky once or that he can build and sustain a program? I'm guessing the former. Those square pegs don't go into those round holes every year.

Bailiff got lucky twice in 11 years--2008 with Chase, Dillard, and Thor (after going 3-9 the year before with a team that had gone 7-6 in 2006 and added Thor), and 2012-14 with McHargue, et al. In his other years, he was 22-62. Can Bloomgren do that well?

If you are going to play the luck card, at least acknowledge that the 7-6 of the year before was also lucky.

It is hard not to recall the historic observation posted here nine years ago, almost to the day:

Quote:So they go on in strange paradox, decided only to be undecided, resolved to be irresolute, adamant for drift, solid for fluidity, all-powerful to be impotent. So we go on preparing more months and years . . . for the locusts to eat.

I'm finished with Rice football until Bloomgren is gone. I won't be there next season.

Serious question… is there anyone on this board who is a supporter? I haven’t seen a supporting post in months

Not just 'losing seasons'----- more like looooooossssssiiiinnng seasons.

There is a lot more to a series of 5-7 season than a series of seasons where the farging *high point* is 4-8.

The former is a .400-ish winning record --- this Joe Schlabotnick of a coach that we are saddled with for next year is doing a .200 winning record overall.

One poster said it well -- I feel like I got punched in the gut.

In the fall pre-covid, I was asked to host a lunch in one of the 'let the AD and coaches visit the people away from Houston and regale our foreign alumni with tales of great derring do'. It ran close to a grand to host (more local people than expected showed up, and I had zero issue with that.)

I think I would beg off doing that once more for this AD if asked again at this point.

If they have the "coaches' convoy" to highlight the football season as they did prior to Covid in the far away places apart from Houston, I think it a fair question to Bloom of he is going to repeat for a 5th time what has been an abject failure of an offensive scheme, and if so, what is now so different.

Im old, Im cranky, and at a point I think it a proper question if it presents itself.
