Flo Sports
Many of us purchased Annual subscriptions to Flosports last year on 11-25-2020 (the day of our first Men's basketball game). If you did so too, they automatically renew tomorrow.

I cancelled my today so as not to pay for another year.

They asked why I cancelled my subscription.

I clicked "other" and said:

The CAA will not allow JMU to compete in the CAA tourneys.

Not sure it will do anything, but explaining it to Flo felt good.

It's worth another thread to remind folks of the renewal.

I responded similarly.
If one person used that as their reason, I would say it wouldn't mean much. However, the more people that have a similar response is going to be harder to ignore.
I'm sure Flo will learn pretty quickly that the media deal isn't all that they think it is. And they will learn why. The CAA sold them a false bill of goods.

RE: Flo Sports
I have an annual to FLO for a year or so now. Will probably keep it until the spring to watch softball and lacrosse along with the current WBB and MBB seasons. Once the spring sports season is over goodbye FLO, we will hardly miss you.

RE: Flo Sports
My year subscription ends today. I imagine I’ll probably do monthly through Feb for womens and mens hoops.

Wow, good catch Dukester!

Indeed I have a yearly plan renewing tomorrow also.
Canceled! (the option was in a small gray font that can be easy to miss)

On the fence about going monthly like Hyper for MBB/WBB, but don’t want to give Flo any support after Feb. Also felt real good to hit that cancel button and tell Flo why.

RE: Flo Sports
I do the monthly subscription during basketball season. I went to renew it and they wanted $29.99 per month! I contacted customer service to ask about options and all I got was some type of canned response. Probably automated in some way.

I found $12.50 per month going through the CAA website but had to use a different email address to get the lower price. I am guessing new subscribers get the deal but returning subscribers don’t? Either way, I am done with Flo at the end of February.

RE: Flo Sports
If the MBB team weren't as good as they are I would have cancelled already, but I really want to catch the away games. I may get to the point in the next month or two that I change my mind, but for now I'll keep my monthly. I'm on the $12.50/month plan, so it sucks, but for another couple months I can do it knowing I'll never have to pay it again.

For the record I will move to Monthly through the basketball season, but for now I'm unsubscribed.

RE: Flo Sports
Do you guys know why your conference went with Flo instead of ESPN+? Doesn't make sense with Flo being more expensive than ESPN+...unless they are doing the whole thing, whereas ESPN+ just picks up the feed.

Because it's the worst run conference in the nation

I definitely won't claim to know the details of the deals, but I'm pretty sure the Flo deal has a lot to do with numbers of subscribers.
JMU wasn't happy about the deal for several reasons.
-JMU had a free service to fans called MadiZONE. It was without question the best production in the conference (and still is). Part of the Flo deal was that JMU would not be allowed to offer MadiZONE free any longer. Also, Flo/CAA wanted MadiZONE to be the model of production for all the schools to follow. To put it nicely, no schools even got close.
-JMU fans would largely be funding the media deal. I do not believe the ESPN deal is similar in that it is funded by fan subscriptions, but I may be wrong. As someone mentioned, about a third of all subscribers for the CAA were JMU fans. JMU voiced their displeasure with the deal while it was being structured and the conference turned a blind eye to their concern.

They decided to tax the Football schools (primarily JMU) so they could buy airtime for a handful of basketball games on CBSSN. When JMU leaves and the money collapses, what they will be left with is games nobody can watch and no exposure. Shooting themselves in the foot.

Any football first school would be foolish to join. Even for basketball it seems like a drag to lock most of your games behind an obscure paywall.

Thanks for all the responses...the last one makes some sense. After our games on Saturdays I like to watch games going on or the replays of good teams...could never watch JMU.

RE: Flo Sports
I think the deal is Flo would pay the CAA $1,000,000 a year, and the CAA would use those funds to buy 8 national basketball games on CBSSportsnetwork each year.

Some of you old guys remember in the olden days JMU would pay Home Team Sports $5,000 to broadcast games on their network.

As far as I know, this deal was the first public spat between jmu and the caa.

From what I understand, (none of it firsthand) jmu's first choice was a platform that could grow the brand and get new sports fans: exactly what you are talking about-people who just want to check around.

The second choice was to run madizone. That way they could pick up casual jmu fans who might check in but weren't likely to buy a service and grow the fanbase that way. Also, jmu could pull more in ad revenue than they could get from flo. None of our conference mates could break even by taking it inhouse.

To further piggyback on this, I believe Flo also allowed local TV broadcasts, and ESPN would have required most schools to up their production values to meet the standard. Although, I have seen some broadcasts on ESPN+ that were high school level in quality.

My annual renewal date isn't until the end of August, but once the DCI season is done next summer, hopefully I will remember to cancel.

I hate that BOA isn’t on FLO anymore. It really made my subscription feel worthwhile.

Flo and my $s - won't happen, even on a monthly basis. Our audio broadcast and live stats are a suitable option this season.
