JMU vs Murray State @ 2:30pm 11/24/2021
Discuss. Going 1-1 so far in the Naples tournament, can JMU come out with a winning tournament record?

RE: JMU vs Murray State @ 2:30pm 11/24/2021
It looks like most of Murray State's production comes from two players, 6'5 guard Tevin Brown and 6'10 forward KJ Williams, who average 20 and 18 points respectively. They both shoot over 50% from the field and over 40% from the arc. But, neither are especially good from the free throw line at 67% and 58% respectively (60% as a team), something to keep in mind down the stretch. The difference could be their 6.3 steals per game average to our 12.6, exactly double. That could be a double-digit swing in our favor.

The one thing I would like to see us do better is stop with the pump fake behind the arc. It just gives defenders an opportunity to get in the shooter's face. If you have an open look, catch, go up, and release. I believe our three-point production would benefit greatly by doing that one thing.

If our defense is as smothering as it has been, I like our chances!

Is WSVA broadcasting the games? Long drive today and would be nice to have a few hour diversion.

RE: JMU vs Murray State @ 2:30pm 11/24/2021
Murray St is one of the worst Free Throw shooting teams in the nation at 57%. In a close game that should favor the Dukes.

Coach has really used limited full court press the first 2 days, but can let it all hang out today in the last game of the tourney. Get lots o’ steals and make their big run up and down the court until he is tired.
Our half court offense has to be better and we’ll see if the wrong shooters turn down open 3’s like they should.

Lots of trends early season… rarely do we see Amadi and Sule on the court together. Rarely do we see Falden and Hodge on the court together.
Rarely do we see Morse take a good shot. Gotta get that guy on a short leash.

Still waiting for the Dukes to light it up from 3. We’ve been told this is a good 3 point shooting team, but the numbers don’t back it up yet. Falden, Hodge, and who is going to be the 3rd reliable shooter?

Side note - the one good thing about the middle school size gym is that you can hear everything. Players talking smack and coaches working the refs. Usually coach By is very passive and I wish he would work the refs a little more. But in the tourney he has stepped up a few times to challenge the officials on questionable calls. Need more of that especially since this team is relying on aggressive defense with lots of contact. If we get refs with a tight whistle it will wreck the pressure D.

We have a couple guys on the team who jaw more than they focus on the game. Most others are locked in and using their mental game to their advantage.

Murray is a better team than JMU so far this year, but the Dukes haven’t played their best yet. Upset City today in day 3 of 3. The Racers no longer have Ja Morant and the Dukes do have Hollman Smith. Advantage JMU

JMU 82
Murray State 79

Murray State and FAU (on the road) Sunday should be close to toss up games.

We're playing a lot of similar caliber teams this OOC which is good.

UVA seems to be improving by the game.

It looks like the Dukes are +4.5. Would be a massive win if we can game plan against their big man and make them get to the line.

Say what you want about the venue, but the quality of opponents for this tournament has been very good. I think that more than anything was why Coach By chose this tournament.
We have yet to have an easy D-I opponent and today is no different.
I think this is going to come down to consistency. We cannot come out flat and need to make shots early. If we do that, I think we can win.

How about some perspective on our program. Murray State is a highly successful mid-major program. During the last Non-COVID season they won a ton of games and blew out 5-seed Purdue in the Tournament. They chose to play in the same tournament as JMU at the same venue. They play 2 or 3 games per year against Non-Division Opponents. Sound familiar?

Maybe our leaders are not as naive as some of you think they are.
Let’s enjoy this season and support our team, coaches, and administration while they try to reach goals outside of winning the CAA tournament.

This comment is not in response to any particular post, just seemed like a logical place to put it.

Go Dukes!

Ha! Guaranteed one of those kats was Hart during intermission playing pong with one hand and holding a session IPA in the other.

Also, I think I saw someone doing sit ups on a mat in the corner complete with HS gym class garb on. What kinda tournament...

Kent St beat GW 77-69 yesterday. And Wright St is trailing Long Beach St 62-57 w/ 7:22 left. Some of you may remember the LB St. coach Dan Monson. He took Gonzaga to the Elite 8 in 1998. That was Gonzaga's coming out party on a national stage.

Little known fact… I did win the city championship in ping pong when I was 12. Still have a massive trophy in my parents attic somewhere. True story.

The campus is actually very nice and has an athletic tilt. Lots of nice facilities for private school athletes, but venues are small so probably not many students enrolled and no need for large grandstands. They do have candy, soda, and lukewarm burgers at the concession stand though. AND YOU CAN BRING FOOD AND DRINKS INTO THE GYM! 04-rock

McMahon is a good coach. Would have been a good get but I don’t know if JMU contacted him. Maybe after By goes to 2 NCAA tourneys we can backfill with McMahon.
