Exactly! Good coaching on Murray State's part. Williams wasn't getting doodly done in the first half. He was getting eaten up by our smaller, quicker players. So, he sat the bench to start the second half as Murray went small ball, driving to the bucket and scoring almost at will. After getting a good lead, they brought Williams back in who was posting up on Sule and manhandling him, backing him in under the bucket and scoring easily. Williams scored zero points in the first half, 11 in the second half.

We have a ways to go, but I have all the confidence in the world that By will get us there. As has been the case for many years, the missing piece of the puzzle is a good big man.

I missed his post game today, but I did catch it yesterday. He said this team really doesn't know what it is yet. I would agree 100%.
It's still early in the season but I really don't know what kind of team we have. Obviously they have a LOT of fight and I really like that.
Really glad to hear what By said about today's game. He definitely knows what's happening with this team and I have full confidence that this team will get there.
What was also mentioned by Coach By was how challenging of a road trip this has been for the team. To travel to EKU and then down to Naples has been tiring. Hopefully this break will be good for them.

I know it's been said you can't get a good (or even serviceable) big man below the P7 level, but...

Last 3 games
KSU- 6'11" 8-12 FG, 16 pts
WSU- 6'9" 9-13 FG, 19 pts
MSU- 6"10" 6-10 FG, 13 pts

All opponents were mid majors-just sayin'.
Food for thought for the future.

Well I missed the entire second half. Probably a good thing after reading through the thread.

Little bit of a buzz kill but we're pretty similar to the teams we've played which is better than we have been in the past. I still think this team has a solid upside, and I'm optimistic we will improve a lot.

Fingers crossed....

With all the new parts and the existing young parts.....learning curve to be expected. Couldn't overcome that with the grit and talent.

Like everyone else, I expect Coach By to be getting much more out of this engine after he has a chance to tune it up and have all these guys become familiar with each other's games and better learn their roles going forward.

I think you are correct. There's a lot to like. Think we got a little spoiled after our hot start. I'm hopeful that Ihenacho can provide a spark and a steadying influence to the offense.

With a big fat ZERO in the first half. He can’t breathe with 2 Dukes on him in the post at all times. Sometimes 2 guys before a post entry pass is even attempted. Well done, but we can’t expect him to not score in the 2nd half. Perhaps some full court pressure is in the back pocket to throw them off if they start getting some momentum.

Hope this is not a reversal of yesterday.

I'd like to see us take a lead and build on it throughout the second half to win comfortably.

Thanks Dukester...

Yeah there aren't a ton of them out there for the mid-majors but it's not impossible either. Will probably be much more likely after at least another year or two of improvement. I'm sure it doesn't help that for any of those guys in the area who don't get the P7 offer they want, they have so many other solid options like VCU, GMU, ODU.

Well shoot.

Shoulda stopped reading around post 45 or something.

Hopefully this exactly why they play these fake tourneys. Free games and can work on rotation, cohesiveness and the strategery

Let’s face, we’re playing pick up ball right here

Happy Thanksgiving Dukes!

Our worst 2 offensive players on the team are the guys that take the most shots. Not good.
They also talk a lot of smack while missing a lot of shots. Big head disease where they think they are better than they actually are. Some humble pie is in order and it needs to be dished by coach By.

Sort of.

I think it is more that they feel the pressure of trying to be the go-to guy than any attitude problem. If you look at decent to good years JMU has had recently:

-In '09, 11, and 13 Devon could get his whenever he needed to (even though someone else was always the leading scorer, he took over when necessary and was always the "closer" in tight games).
-In 15, 16, it was Curry
-And then last year, we had Matt.

Hopefully, Ihenacho can either be that guy or he can be a good enough floor general that he gets everyone else to play within themselves.

I did a quick check on Vado's stats the last two years. In the games he played next to Matt, he shot over 37% from three. In the 10 games since it became "his team," he has shot under 27.

The other point is that last year, Matt and Terrell split most of the ball handling duties and let Vado pick his spots. This year, By moved Strickland to the bench to try to make up for some of the lost scoring in the starting lineup. Vado has never been a true point guard, but is now trying to do it while both he and Tak figure out how they fit.

All of that said, I was serious about wanting to see Stickland, Falden and Hodge play together. I think that would allow enough spacing for Terrell to get to the rim, either Wooden or Molson to get to a comfortable spot in the lane off the dribble and Amadi or Sule to work underneath.

I had wondered about that. Great stat- thanks for finding that. Some guys are great Robins, but not ready to be Batman. We may be a team with a bunch of Robins this year. Nothing wrong with that.

Normally I don't put too much stock in a player not in the lineup changing things that much ("let's see the Freshman" , etc.) But the buzz on Ihenacho is coming from all corners including Coach By. Expected to play Sunday (although I'm sure a little rusty). This might be the one time that a single piece really does give us that final ingredient .
