Why no timeouts… ever??
Penny currently is an ineffective leader… as was Josh. They both are cut from the same “pleaser” cloth & make for great salesmen & poor leaders. His staff looks divided with the UNC contingent of Brown & Wallace watching with distance & disbelief. Penny consults with Toppert for answers but good god, Toppert’s offense is what laid the groundwork for last years uneven season & well, it’s Groundhog Day, because we’re right back to where we always are.
What I do not understand, however, is why… if the players are not doing what they’re instructed in practice, then why does Penny NEVER call a timeout to correct them… Geez, it’s seem like as soon as an ill-advised 3/4 court lob is thrown, a timeout & ass chewing would immediately follow, along with a play & expectations. Instead, this piss poor play is tolerated & then blamed on the players when the difficult questions come at the post game press conference. The time to correct mistakes is immediately after they happen… particularly early in the season. Penny called 2 timeouts last night & both were called too late in each half to amount to squat.

The 2nd one came after they'd gone up 17, not 7. ANY coach worth their salt knows when to interrupt an opponents momentum.
Something tells me every season will be an assistant coaching carousel.
Install a freaking offensive scheme. We currently don't have one. Make it easy, ISU was running junior high schemes last night and curb-stomped us because they executed basketball basics all night long.
I love Penny and what he does for Memphis but he's not changed one damn thing in 4 years and we still have the glaring deficiencies we had when he took over. We can't get good looks against even marginally better teams, we can't take care of the ball, we can't shoot over 70% from the line consistently, and we don't play as a team. Iow's wash, rinse, repeat and be happy with the NIT. This team doesn't make the tourney again this year if those issued aren't corrected. I can see us losing the next 5 games, going 3-2 would be a win.
