The duration doesn’t bother me. It’s that we’re to believe this deal is it for the next decade and there won’t be any restructuring or further teases/threats along the way. Because they will happen the moment Franklin has another good year. In that respect, the buyouts are bull****. This didn’t need to be a ten-year deal. Six million after next season if someone really wants him elsewhere isn’t as shocking as it looks. He’s a fire sale the year after.

We’ll be seeing this play out again toward the end of 2023; 2024 for certain.

A&M lucked into the best situation in sports with their 10 year deal. They got a good coach, they were forced to give him time to rebuild the team bc they weren't on a four year time horizon, and hey, 7.5 was high, but they said "he'll be a bargain in later years".

And then they went and panicked and extended him after year 3 with a big raise. It entirely defeated the benefit of a 10 year contract.

This will be Penn State in 2023 if the team is on a playoff or greater trajectory. Because, come 2024, he’s a steal to poach.

I get the optics of commitment…but that’s all the ten years are standing on.

Every time there a big opening these guys get their name floated and their agents get them raises to stay put. The economics of being a hot commodity.

Franklin can’t win the big games. Why extend him?

I don’t know how to feel about the extension. Yes, he has a 2-1 NY6 record and won a B1G title in 2016. But the last two seasons have been a disappointment although he got a pass last year because of the pandemic.

Time will tell if Penn State made the right decision.

Most are not "hot commodities". They are just above average commodities on a shelf full of crappy product and the schools don't extend them because they are great. They extend them out of the fear they won't be able to replace them with at least another just average coach.

How do you make just above average look more valuable? You compare it to the flood of incompetence around it. A multitude of idiots makes an average man look smart.

Right now, College football has one Hall of Fame football coach, Saban. Then you have maybe half a dozen solid coaches, several of whom learned from Saban. In this mix you find Fickell, Fisher and Smart. Solid coaches are stars who with consistency over time will grow into Hall of Fame coaches. Then you have maybe a dozen who are above average and some of those may grow into solid coaches. And all of them are surrounded by a sea of idiots who only win when facing bigger idiots and who seldom beat an above average coach and never beat a solid one.

Franklin is above average, but he's the first PSU coach since Paterno not to flounder (by PSU standards).

So much truth to this. That's why I champion the Saban rule. Coaches should be paid in relation to accomplishments versus Saban. P5 starts with a 1 million dollar mininum.

So Salary = 1 million + (Coach Natties/Saban Natties)*Saban Salary.

Bonus structure is if you win a natty that year, you get Saban's 1 year salary as a bonus, because you're the best coach in college football that year.

Seems like he can keep them at least above .500 - might as well lock that in long term. Plus nobody's kids ever want to move from places in the north to warm places near the beach, at least that's what I always hear.
