Keep turnovers down...And move the ball on offense and we should win this one going away.

I desperately hope this year will be different and it will all finally click, like it did for Cal when he got the Laurinburg Prep group. But after watching us play WKU at home, I have this pit in my stomach that tells me we are still the same old AAU team that we've been during the Penny coaching era.

Look, we all watch the games. We've heard multiple color commentators, including Dick Vitale, make comments like "They dribble with no purpose" and "Their offense is nothing more than taking turns". We've seen games where they turn the ball over 25 + times, many of the turnovers being ridiculous and unforced. We've seen 12-13 man rotations with guys like Jaden playing too many minutes. We know that we still don't have an elite, true PG that is proven and can take care of the ball and facilitate.

I hope this season is different. I really do. I'm just not convinced it will be.

We'll see. But if you put a gun to my head and said pick the game tonight, I'm leaning Va Tech.

Nobody is putting a gun to your head. It makes you happy to always be as miserable as possible, even if it means pulling out quotes from when we were a bad team last year, and jumping on the bandwagon when a posters says he is hearing things about a non existent point spread.

Before we figured it out last year, we were scoring 71 points per game. This year we are scoring 86 points per game. The turnovers are atrocious, but we are also turning over our opponents like crazy, and we have a lot more firepower and a lot more depth.

You are the type that gets riled up and upset when someone is critical of the team. Otherwise, you would have only responded with the bolded portion.

I'm not riled up, I'm laughing at you. You are using the weirdo concept of line speculation as some kind of proof that Penny sucks. You are allowed being weird.

We are 18-3 with three one possession losses including two against Final Four Houston. You (of course) are focused on quotes from when we weren't a good team and uniquely focused on turnovers, ignoring anything and everything that is good.

Keeping it real...real miserable. As usual.

Is that English? Or did you derive that from Canadian French?

You know what else is unique? Memphis currently ranks dead last (350) in D-1 basketball for turnovers per game. They average 21.5 a game. No other team is above 20.

Here's a fun stat: Memphis hasn't finished better than 318 in turnovers per game since Penny has been the head coach.

I'm sure even Stammers is aware we haven't made the tournament during that stretch. So before you come at me with "But but but it's the style of play, so turnovers are expected because we also force a lot of turnovers and have more possessions."

Well maybe we should try something different so we can actually make the tournament? Seems like the really good teams rank in the top 100 in fewest turnovers committed.

Just thinking out loud, Stammy.

26 turnovers. My man should be embarrassed. I don't care what the situation was. 26 turnovers is sad. And it's not a new problem.

I expect us to struggle to beat good teams. So does Vegas, apparently.

Link on Va Tech as the favorite?

https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basket.../401370022

That's not a line.
That's their BPI algorithm - and the BPI is hot garbage this early in the year.
Much like many of our posters, the BPI still has too much preseason bias to be reliable.

You didn't ask for the line. You asked for the favorite. That's all I had.

Just my 2 cents:

Since we are playing a team with so many juniors and seniors I would start:

Lomax,
Q,
Nolley,
Williams,
Duren

Then rotate in Bates, Dandridge, Minot and Timberlake.

Bates needs to slow down and let the game come to him. Coming in off the bench will give him a good feel for the flow of the game.

mostly agree...except for Lomax starting.
He's played for Penny since 6th grade..and still makes too many careless passes.
I'd roll with Timberlake and Bates. Take your lumps early...and hopefully by the tourney they've grown into the position.

They didn’t learn to play defense the way they do in AAU.

They always leave that part out of the narrative that Penny can't coach.
It's always "AAU" or "Street ball".
But they leave out the part where we are top 5 defense every single year.
So it's a bogus comparison.
But it's a way to take shots, so they cling to what they can - even when we're top 10 and 4-0.

Some of the negative comments about turnovers, etc. are valid.
But damn, some of you act like we just LOST our first four games vs the reality that we are 4-0.
Go tigers!

So Timberlake has proven to you that he is a competent ball handler and wont turn it over if pressed?

Lomax so far this season has turned the ball over on 47% of the possessions he’s been on the court. How could Timberlake or anyone else be any worse ?

Experienced team and were proven last year so even though they haven’t played anyone tough this year they are a very solid club.

Had to play Lomax since Timberlake was real shaky early on…look for that trend to change soon hopefully.

Lol I don't think you know what the stat you just quoted means...

Think about what you just posted...That essentially says every other time they come down the court while Lomax is out there Lomax turns it over. Does that even sound right. Does Lomax only play 6 possessions a game.

What you said and what the stat means are 2 entirely different things.

There is only one other player in the American Athletic Conference who plays at least 40% of his team’s minutes with a higher turnover rate, according to KenPom.

And some still think Lomax is the straw to stir the drink... amazing to me. And I'm still amazed he's the only PG on the roster.

Fair warning VT does not foul. Only 13 per game meaning the other team does not get in the bonus in both halves. Tigers averaging 8 more fouls per game.

Have you looked at their schedule...

I know ours hasn't been world beaters...But at least a couple of teams with a pulse.
