Turning a Corner?
The second half last night may have been one of the best halves of bball I've seen the Tigers play in a long time. And I hope it's a sign they are turning the corner.

The defense was suffocating from start to finish, and that's clearly the strength of the team. But the difference tonight, especially in the second half, was the offense cutting down on the turnovers and hitting 16-20 FTs. Had Memphis turned the ball over 20 times and only made 8-10 FTs, Tigers probably lose. That's the difference.

The offense doesn't have to be really good. It just needs to be disciplined and not turn the ball over. If Tigers can do that consistently, Memphis is a dangerous and tough team to beat.

We still don't have a ton of knock down shooters and scorers outside of Nolley. But if Bates adjusts to the college game, puts on some weight and develops into what we know he can be, look out. He's so young. Needs time to become a big time player. He'll get there. Duren is a monster but still adjusting as well.

Last night was fun. I haven't said that in a long time when referring to our bball team. Fingers crossed they can keep that going.

Agreed. I was pleased with Malcolm last night. 8 rebounds and hitting FTs is a big improvement. Also great to see Earl getting PT and hitting shots. I was disappointed we didn't get to see Josh Minott more. Not sure why he isn't getting more minutes. I am hoping John Camden is able to get well and get in some shots. A few more good shooters would make Duren's life a lot easier. Not sure what's going on with Quinones shot attempts. He's too good of a shooter not to be getting some up.

Quinones was 40% last season on a good amount of attempts. He seems to be in a funk. Thought he was out of it when he hit his first three. Williams was 45% on only 59 attempts last year. And Bates can hit them. Both Jayden and Camden can space the floor.

I think the problem is the quality of looks they got last night. Can’t remember many good looks from three.. Think the offense just needs to do a better job of the kind of looks they get.

LQ seems lethargic, he seems like the player that has been affected the most by our incredible depth.

Seems like we say this every 4 or 5 games with Malcolm and then he has 4 or 5 stinkers before the next one. He just needs some consistency.

The issue is Bates at 1.8 assists and 3 turnovers per game. He is really not much different at running the team than Boogie and Baugh were. The standing around is because he isn't generating opportunities for others and doesn't have great vision when he sets up from outside. By the end of the year he will hopefully have a little bit of Tyreke in him. He isn't going to be a pure point guard, but if he can break down defenders and make good decisions when he does, he will be very good.

Timberlake is marginally better, but he can't shoot from outside yet, and he also dribbles with his head down, and can't create many opportunities for others.

We are as good as anybody in the country except at point guard. Lomax has his limitations, but he is still the best we have. The problem with having him out there, is that it creates a logjam at the 2-3, where we have so many players that need minutes.

When Lomax is on the floor he is running the team. When he isn't, I think our best option is to have Williams start the offense. I think at some point, Minott can take on the same role that DJ had starting the offense at the end of last year.

I think it’s mental with Lomax. He seems to me to play better coming off the bench. He looks more confident especially on defense

We know from the last three years, that he is going to shoot much better in the second half of the season, he always has. His shot looks even better this year, you can tell that he is putting in the work. I think the best combo is him at point guard with Bates off of the ball.

I didn't see lethargic. He made his first 3 from the corner but missed the others. Really good shooting from the corner. Pretty good defense when he tried to post up Storm and they doubled. He's never lethargic on defense. Hounded his man all night long. Even denied him from getting the ball. Va Tech is probably used to teams going under screens where their shooters are left for open 3's. We either go through them or switch.

I agree completely with everything you posted. I see it more on offense. He has the ball in his hands a lot less than he did last year. Even if he went through periods where he didn't shoot much, I thought he was much more involved in the offense last year compared to this year.

RE: Turning a Corner?
It’s a long season. We have some experienced guys and 2 stud freshmen. Not sure why Minott hasn’t been playing. Guys are gonna have nights when they struggle and nights when they are the one who pulls us thru. Last night Dandridge gave some quality mins - especially in 1h when Duren was in foul trouble. Williams was the man last night. Tomorrow may be Nolley or LQ. It’s just nice to have multiple guys who can go off when your top guys don’t have it. That is what makes a great team

LQ is fine. Playing defense especially the way Coach P wants them to play will take their legs from them. A good shooter needs his legs, not fatigued when attempting to shoot.

We won yes...Did we play anywhere near our potential...No.

And that is a good thing...This teams ceiling is very high.

RE: Turning a Corner?
I didn't see anything in the game that made me think they have turned a corner or taken it to a whole new level. I wasn't overly impressed with the play. I'm really glad they won, don't get me wrong, but they look like a team that may still be working things out. The chemistry isn't there yet. JMO.

They need to do more pick n rolls. It can be devastating for opposing teams as they have the size and skill to execute it. If the inside shot isn’t there then you can throw it back out for a cleaner look

Last night was fun. I haven't said that in a long time when referring to our bball team. Fingers crossed they can keep that going.

Quinones was 40% last season on a good amount of attempts. He seems to be in a funk. Thought he was out of it when he hit his first three. Williams was 45% on only 59 attempts last year. And Bates can hit them. I think the problem is the quality of looks they got last night. Can’t remember many good looks from three. Both Jayden and Camden can space the floor. Bates can hit too. Think the offense just needs to do a better job of the kind of looks they get.

Agree with most of that. I still think that Alo plays better off the bench--we saw it in that late run last season (before his injury) and i think we saw it last night. Minott needs to play more in order to turn into that combo center role that DJ had last year (likely needs Williams to stay out of foul trouble in order to do that). He's barely played the last 2 games.

We run a ton of pick and rolls and did last night. The problem was the defense was going way under every screen, daring our guards to shoot and not giving up the rim runs to Duren.

For it to be effective we have to have some guards knock down threes or at least be willing to go down hill when given a 5 feet of cushion.

From a purely stats perspective they are about the same but Bates is a very willing and capable passer. He is just incredibly young and having to figure the college game out. Bates is learning he can no longer just dribble down the court and shoot over his defender. And because of that he has to start looking to get to the rim to create airspace on the perimeter. Right now he just wants to shoot and defenders are pressing way out on him because he is looking to just shoot instead of getting to the rim.

The last two games have been a shock to him for the exact reasons you list. Right now, he is almost the same as Boogie. He isn't being allowed to shoot and when he tries to get by his man his head is down and he isn't looking to pass.

I think the light will go on by the end of the season. He will learn to drive by his man, keep going to the rim, pull up, or find someone open inside or on the perimeter. With his height, he should be able to make the entry pass that Lomax always looks to make inside, in his sleep. Just being able to do that and slide to an open spot when our opponents cave in on Duren should create a lot of opportunities for everyone.

RE: Turning a Corner?
Last night Bates was a high-schooler playing senior college men--some of whom are probably there an extra year due to covid...shrug Draining those last free throws says a lot about him actually
