Re-thinking the formation of the SEC
In addition to supporting my favorite teams, I like to check in on other teams and leagues as well, and what they think and how they feel about certain issues. I came across what I thought to be a potential dull and boring topic on the ACC board turned out to be a very interesting one and was the inspiration for this very post.
We know when the SEC was formed, the teams that were charter members were as follows: Georgia, Auburn, Alabama, Florida, Tennessee, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Vandy, LSU, Tulane, University of the South (Sewanee), Ole Miss, and Mississippi State. I think I read somewhere that the main reason that the University of the South joined the SEC was to continue its rivalry with Vanderbilt. But, what if Sewanee decided to stay in the SoCon, and play Vandy OOC?? What if the SEC invited SC instead to join, instead of the University of the South?? Would SC accept? How would this have affected both the SEC and the ACC in the future??

RE: Re-thinking the formation of the SEC
Given the fondness of SC for secession, I fear we might have ended up leaving the SEC if we had joined in the beginning. Would have been a powerful argument in the old days before the huge money, etc. that we could win more games in the ACC and play all those NC schools next door. And we might have gotten mad about Alabama schools running the SEC like we did Tobacco Road in the ACC...
All things considered I think I'm glad we weren't invited until 1992, and realize what a great thing we've got! Those ACC fantasies about SC returning always make me laugh.
