RE: Other games of interest MBB 21-22
No help from our conference mates last night. It's a four team race for the regular season title at this point between UNCW, Towson, Hofstra and Delaware. Hofstra has the easiest remaining schedule
10-2 UNCW (Six games left with three against top five teams) No team can have a head to head tiebreaker against UNCW, but UNCW can secure H2H tiebreakers with wins against Towson and Delaware.
Home -CofC, W&M, Towson, JMU
Finish away - Drexel, Delaware
9-3 Towson (Six games with two against a top five team)
Home - Elon
Away - UNCW, CofC
Home - JMU
Away - JMU
Home - Delaware(Resume suspended play with 18:42 left and Delaware leading 38-29)
8-4 Hofstra(six games with one against a top 5 team)
At Delaware, At Elon
Then finish with four at home: Northeastern, Elon, W&M, CofC
7-4 Delaware (Seven games with three against the top 5)
Home - Hofstra, JMU
Away - Elon, W&M
Home - CofC, UNCW
Away - Towson(Resume suspended play with 18:42 left and Delaware leading 38-29)
This is going to be tight to the end.
The Hofstra at Delaware game tomorrow is going to be huge, since that may be the best chance for a Hofstra loss with six game left. If they beat Delaware there is a good chance they finish out at 14-4 in the conference and their worst loss would be W&M. UNCW would need to finish 4-2 to match that record, and because of tiebreakers, we'd need to make sure our worst loss was to Elon, by not losing to W&M. If they lose to Delware, they could still finish at 13-5 allowing UNCW to go 3-3 and still finish ahead of them.
Towson is at 9-3 and we play them next Thursday at home. If we can beat CofC and W&M at home before we play them, we'll stand at 12-2 in the conference. Towson only plays Elon before that game and could be 10-3 when we face them. If we can beat Towson, they fall to 10-4 and we go to 13-2 and we have the HH tiebreaker, plus their worst loss will be to NU. We could then go 1-2 in our last three games after that and finish ahead of Towson even if they win out. However, Towson will finish the suspended game at home against Delaware, where they are down nine with 18 minutes remaining in the game.
Delaware is 7-4 and has the most games remaining at 7. They play Hofstra on Saturday in a huge game since one of them will go to five losses. If they beat Hofstra, they would need to go 6-0 to finish 14-4 with games remaining against UNCW at home and finishing the suspended game leading at Towson. Their worst loss so far is to Drexel.
Looking at all of this, UNCW needs to win the next three games to get in our best position to win the regular season title, secure an NIT bid and secure the #1 seed in the CAA tournament. Hofstra is playing really well, and with the easiest schedule remaining, I am going to assume they win out and are going to set the mark for everyone at 14-4. UNCW could go 5-1, or Towson could go undefeated to finish and win the conference outright, but their remaining schedules are really tough and I don't see that happening. We need to go at least 4-2, and we can't lose to W&M or JMU so our worst loss will be Elon. The ideal situation would be to win the next four games at home, then we could lose the two games away and be ok. If we lose even one home game, we would need a win at Drexel or at Delaware.
C'mon Hawks', beat CofC and W&M at home, and the conference title is yours to take with a win over Towson.
