Silverfield just brought in the best recruiting class in program history this year. Those guys will all develop and get better and get more playing time next season. The 2022 recruiting class is also looking like a very good one. It would be stupid to throw it all away and start over.

This year has been significantly affected by injuries. There is a lot to be optimistic about for next season. The people who are ready to fire Silverfield are making an emotional, irrational decision based on a bad record in one season. I know because I was right there with them after the Houston game. But after some time to reflect and calm down, I think Silverfield definitely should get another year. He's a great recruiter and these kids play really hard for him. He's had a lot of bad luck this season and he still deserves a chance to show what he can do.

I understand the instinct to want to tear it all down after one bad season, but that would be impulsive and a terrible decision for the future of this football program.

From what I hear about the people that want him gone is not about the record this season. It plays into it but there’s a lot more. I’m not the one that wants him gone , this season at least. But to say there aren’t a lot of problems is to really bury your heard into the sand.

There are a lot of problems, but some of that is also based on injuries, youth, and inexperience. Mistakes are costly and that's something that must be cleaned up next year. Outside of UCF (lost by 17) and Houston (Lost by 18), or losses have been by 6 points or less which indicates we were pretty much 1-2 plays, mistakes, turnovers that could've changed that game for the better.

5-6 is disappointing, but the people ignoring a whole context of it to fit their narrative of "total collapse" is just insane.

I agree with someone earlier...the biggest red flag is that our HC is a former Oline coach both in College and NFL and our OLine has been atrocious. Maybe that is part of Silverfield being more of a Managing-type Head Coach than hands on (I'm not sure of that). But that being his strength and forte, and that being a big weakness (though injuries have made it more glaring), is a big cause for concern.

I think Silverfield deserves at least one more year. With experience and still some issues, including the pandemic, he went 8-3 in his first year. In a year with a lot of injuries, hurt players, inexperience in some areas, we definitely had growing pains.

But I think if we're talking about this next season and we're 5-6 again or worse or near...it's probably time to move on.

I agree, BUT the thing is, with conference realignment, we truly don't have another year to give. This is the worst possible timing as someone else said.

BUT on the flipside, this would be the first "real" hire that Veatch (and likely the new president) would do...do we want them making a "rookie" mistake that sets us even further back while all the conference stuff is still hanging? Is the devil we know better than the devil we don't in that case?

I agree the o-line has been bad (in the run game) but again look at the injuries. Starting left tackle Austin Myers is out for the season. Backup left tackle Jonah Gambill has been hurt. We've had to play our 3rd string left tackle. Left guard Isaac Ellis has also been injured.

The injuries this season have just been overwhelming.

well put. I have said the same things for the past few weeks. We need to finsih strong this year and hopefully he makes a few staff changes and get some big recruits here.

I understand concern and it is ill-timed, but I think a bigger conference will be more focused on our overall commitment to the program versus just W-L but you're definitely right. There's a risk in both keeping Silverfield and hoping for the best, or risking the unknown and hoping for the best. But I'd be worried the second option that they'd try to find a known name with HC experience (i.e. like Cincy did with Tommy Tuberville) that just kind of oozes mediocrity. We could get rid if Silverfield and end up with Muschamp.

Exactly. With us having no real track record of this AD/incoming Prez making winning hires, is the risk worth it? I can't imagine it is for this year at least.

Veatch made the Silverfield hire. Word is that he was given TOO MUCH say in the Silverfield hire. They were still in the honeymoon period with Veatch, he wanted to make the hire, and they let him.

I'm grasping here, let the creatives come up with it. But if we could have kept half the 25 that left we'd have won at least 1 more game.

Someone contact the NIL people at the university and see how we could go about setting this up.
A contribution pool plan for Joe Fan to throw $100 into every once in a while.
Then players get shares that vest and payout over time.

i would help but dont know if the others will. they gripe about a $60 game ticket or a 20 minute drive to the stadium.

Your RT gets at least 1 flag every game. Coffey and JP martin will be big play guys out of the backfield. Coffey was out for the year and JP redshirted. get the line healthy and you have the weapons there.

meh
IMO, Johns has NOT been fine.
The last 2 years have been the worst years for points per game since Fuente's first 2 years.
Thing is, Fuente was building from a mess of rubble he inherited.
Not so with Ryan/Johns.
They had the blueprint for success.
Fast, explosive, creative offense.
6 straight years of top 25 offenses.
They've rebuilt it into a predictable run-of-the-mill RPO offense.

And our line gets hurt every single year.
That is part of the game.
Seems a lot of excuses made using that all of a sudden.

But I digress.
Solutions, not complaints - lol.
Again, I'm back to we have to change the offense philosophy.

The O-Line has been hit hard by injury but we couldn't run the ball the back half of last season either. As others have stated this is especially troubling since Ryan is an offensive line coach. I guess they redshirted Royce White this year? Ryan was super high on his potential at the tackle position.

RE: How to turn it around?
Simple:

1. Fire Ruin Silverfield
2. Use the outside search firm again
3. Do not let the University staff be in charge of the hiring process
4. Do not make an emotional hire (get rid of our own Matt Luke)
5. Find a coach that will sell the program rather than be in hiding
6. That will yield positive results

Other ways to fix the problem:

1. Do not make Arkansas State's offense look like Alabama, almost blowing a 28 point lead
2. Do not blow a 21 point lead to a CUSA team
3. Do not blow a 17 point lead and lose to a 1 win team on the road (Temple)
4. Do not lose at mediocre Tulsa
4A. Do not send your Freshman kicker out onto the field to attempt his first ever collegiate FG, fresh off a broken foot, from 58 yards, in swirling winds
4B. It does not take an experienced coach or a coach of any sort to understand how 4A will turn out
4C. Do not go for it on 4th down from the 11 yard line when you can take the lead (and already tried to kick 3 FG's)
5. Do not practice all week with limited reps for your starting QB at UCF
5A. Do not punt from your own 30 yard line, to net 10 yards, when points are at a premium on the first drive, setting the tone for the game
5B. Allow Brandon Thomas to have more than 5 carries - don't blame him for transferring if he chooses to
6. Do not mismanage the clock/game/everything to blow another game (ECU)
6A. Do not lose to ECU at home
6B. Do not lose to ECU ever in present time
7. Too much to list for our hapless performance at Houston
7A. Do not wear a turtleneck when it's 57 degrees outside underneath a long sleeve shirt
8. Do not lose to Tulane at home
9. As a result of 1 through 8, see #1 at the very top

That why I said if/when Silverfield gets the boot, this will be Veatch's first "real" hire. When Norvell left, it wasn't difficult to weigh whether or not to hire the assistant who had the backing of all the then-players, coached them in the Cotton Bowl, and by all accounts had momentum on his side with the way he handled the offense.

This will be the first TRUE coaching search he (& the new prez, if they hold off a season) have to do.

The injuries this season have just been overwhelming.

technically, Myers has been out since UTSA, where Gambill stepped in at LT and has started since. Ellis was hurt in UTSA as well and Evan Fields came in to relieve him and has started against temple, tulsa, and ecu. Ellis was back for navy, ucf, and smu. but rumor is he quit the team and they're just saying hes day to day. Matt Dale gives you at least negative 10 yards with false starts a game. Jacob Likes and Parham are your strength in the middle.

The O-Line has been hit hard by injury but we couldn't run the ball the back half of last season either. As others have stated this is especially troubling since Ryan is an offensive line coach. I guess they redshirted Royce White this year? Ryan was super high on his potential at the tackle position.

yeah Royce redshirted. they needed to add serious weight to him. He was like Parham in the sense that he was fine height wise, but quite lean. Royce could compete at RT next year against Denson and Dale if he chooses to return

I understand concern and it is ill-timed, but I think a bigger conference will be more focused on our overall commitment to the program versus just W-L but you're definitely right. There's a risk in both keeping Silverfield and hoping for the best, or risking the unknown and hoping for the best. But I'd be worried the second option that they'd try to find a known name with HC experience (i.e. like Cincy did with Tommy Tuberville) that just kind of oozes mediocrity. We could get rid if Silverfield and end up with Muschamp.

Tubbs won an AAC championship.

Ruin will not

Tubbs also had Butch Jones' recruiting prior to him being there. Once they were gone, they fell quick.

Norvell did a great job.

Silverfield with 8-3 with the majority of Norvell's players left over, including Brady White during a pandemic year where players sat out.

This year, more youth, less of those guys here. It is a step back. No one is disagreeing in disappointment. But every situation is different.

RE: How to turn it around?
I was on the support Silverfield train. I just don't see any bright spots. Our offense could move the ball at the beginning of the year..and now it can't.
The O Line was supposed to be the4 strongest area on the team this season.
On paper one of the best in the AAC. This is why games are played...because in real life..on paper stats don't mean squat.
You cannot measure someone's heart.
If they keep Ryan...massive staff overhaul.
I'm okay with Mc on defense...but the O line coach has to go. I'd be okay with letting Johns call a Air Raid offense...as that is his specialty.

RE: How to turn it around?
I remember the old days.
Every year it was, "yeah but if _____ hadn't gotten hurt, we would have won 3 more games".
One of the differences we've had during this run is that we built depth.
We still had injuries - it's a violent sport.
But the injuries did not ruin our year.
It seems we are heading back to the old days in lack of depth too.
