Exclamation How to turn it around?
Many of us (me included) can easily point out issues and concerns with the football program. We don't need another thread complaining. How can Silverfield turn it around next year?

My first volley...

1. Replace the SC Coordinator. This is a bare minimum. If this does not happen, then I lose all faith in CRS. He will be looking out for his guys more than he is our program.
2. Changes with the offense philosophy. Maybe the OC has to go, maybe not. But the "establish the run" mindset has to change. We need creativeness, speed, and get back to scoring lots of points.
3. Tweak the Defense. I'm not a "fire Mac" guy. I think his D's always come around and he has shown the ability to make adjustments mid-season. The staff just needs to come into the season with a better understanding of who we really are.
4. Hit the Transfer Portal hard. Most positions need a new starter. Priority at RB.

RE: How to turn it around?
I believe you mentioned it before, but I would like to see a drop in RPO plays. It feels like the heavy usage is causing the complaints about the offense being plain or others saying it looks conservative.

I will add that Mac might go on his own this year. I believe his Colorado buyout is up after this year, and so he might be looking to get back to HC. I know that won't upset many here, but I think it would be detrimental for the program if Silverfield is trying to hire a DC this offseason.

I think we need some big beef on the line… get some playmakers on offense and faster dbs…. I think that has to do with a lot of the soft zones bc the dbs can’t stay with the receivers… Houston looked like they flew past us

RE: How to turn it around?
We need a way to stop or discourage the exodus of season bench players via the transfer portal. I know we can't stop it. But if our alumni/fans could sponsor a loyalty club that paid players in the program for more than 3 years a 'loyalty club reward' for their likeness...

I'm grasping here, let the creatives come up with it. But if we could have kept half the 25 that left we'd have won at least 1 more game.

We do need to retain more. Funny thing is 13 guys was never picked up from another college.

That is a really good idea.

seems pretty straight forward. theyre going to have to move on from Bankins and Mac. Losing Mac will actually hurt in recruiting as he still has ties to former OM recruits and mississippi kids. Clark likely to go with him. Your defense shouldnt start being good that late into the season 2 years in a row. also seems like a fit issue. Mashburn is 6'2 250. hes not an outside lineback who can cover the pass.
Johns has been fine. He likes RPO--which is why you see a lot of runs up the middle..the numbers show thats where the advantage should be. The RB situation isnt really that big of a deal. Thomas and Clark are good. theyve both been productive when the line is healthy. the issue was you were on your 2nd string LT and LG. Your RT gets at least 1 flag every game. Coffey and JP martin will be big play guys out of the backfield. Coffey was out for the year and JP redshirted. get the line healthy and you have the weapons there.

Great insights. Looks like the freshman fg kicker gained some confidence last game being perfect.. don’t know if he is the answer but he answered when called upon.
OL need better depth but eze was good every game for the same thing.

RE: How to turn it around?
I disagree with the offense being conservative. Especially with the OC being conservative. We open every game it seems with the pass. We just are unable to run it and for sure break any long runs since the Arkansas State game. If you can’t run vs 6 in the box it’s a problem. I think our o-line has always been an issue but we once had backs that had speed and knew how to make the first guy miss. We don’t have that anymore. Well I think Thomas was the one guy but he is either really bad hurt or else is in the coaches doghouse.

I agree good idea. My company gives me a large allotment of RSUs that vest on an annual basis over a number of years as a retention mechanism. It’s a similar principle.

RE: How to turn it around?
I've been patient. I've been quiet. I've thought about it.

Silverfield was the offensive line coach. I honestly believed our previous incredible running success was due to his offensive lines. It's apparent now that it was more likely due to having NFL quality running backs.

We now have an offensive line coach for a head coach, but we can't run the football. That is a major red flag to me. Major.

I think it is time for a change. I don't see the reason to believe in next year. I used to be a battered fan. Not anymore. I expect better.

It's time for a new coach.

Agreed. We have too much momentum and too much at stake with conference realignment to take a step back. Silverfield's growing pains are happening at a terrible time.

In the last 45 years we have had 10 coaches and only 3 of them have overall winning records. One of them is the current coach.

Keep Seth Henigan - he is already really good as a true freshmen and he will be even better next year with more practice and size. Kevin Johns has done a great job with him and through continued development I believe he has the potential to become the best qb in program history.

Silverfield just brought in the best recruiting class in program history this year. Those guys will all develop and get better and get more playing time next season. The 2022 recruiting class is also looking like a very good one. It would be stupid to throw it all away and start over.

This year has been significantly affected by injuries. There is a lot to be optimistic about for next season. The people who are ready to fire Silverfield are making an emotional, irrational decision based on a bad record in one season. I know because I was right there with them after the Houston game. But after some time to reflect and calm down, I think Silverfield definitely should get another year. He's a great recruiter and these kids play really hard for him. He's had a lot of bad luck this season and he still deserves a chance to show what he can do.

I understand the instinct to want to tear it all down after one bad season, but that would be impulsive and a terrible decision for the future of this football program.

From what I hear about the people that want him gone is not about the record this season. It plays into it but there’s a lot more. I’m not the one that wants him gone , this season at least. But to say there aren’t a lot of problems is to really bury your heard into the sand.
