Loser’s bracket game, but JMU looked better on the floor today than Wright State did. Should be a winnable game and a chance to show marked improvement in half court offense.

Without 14 live ball steals against Kent State, JMU would have been smoked. Need to see a few more set plays and much more driving with intent to kick out for a 3. The defensive ball pressure is impressive in person and there aren’t many teams that can handle it at the college level. Essentially you need 2 point guards on the floor to beat it consistently because of JMU’s quickness and also their length on the wing when they trap.

They need to drive, draw fouls, shoot FTs and forget about raining threes down from all over the place.

Sometimes I get perplexed when coaches tout the 3 point shooting ability of their players, yet the game results show the opposite. I call this the O'Regan syndrome. I'm with Bill (above), like to see more drive to the basket. I am very excited to see what Ihenacho brings to the table as a distributor of the ball.

Unfortunately, today was a problem when JMU tried to drive to the basket. Our guys had a lot of shots altered at the rim. If we could get penetration and kick out to Falden and Hodge, I would take those 3’s all day long. Having Morse shot fake and then side step for a 3 is dumb.

We are a small ball team by design. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a small ball team be good and NOT shoot a lot of 3’s. Embrace the 3 ( but only if it is squared up and after trying to find easy shots ).

One side benefit of shooting 3’s is there are more long rebounds and that helps a small quick team. So far, The Dukes have not lived up to Coach By’s statement that they are a good 3 pt shooting team.

When shooting threes, I have noticed that our players almost always fake, giving defenders an opportunity to put a hand in their faces. It looked like a lot of the three opportunities were open enough that if the shooter caught the ball and went up immediately and released, a lot of those three attempts would have been scores.

Really feel like we need wins in these next two games to keep momentum and fan interest going, especially for the UVA game 2 weeks from today.

Ironically we are playing the teams I hoped to play, but hoped/assumed it would be in the winner's bracket.

Same today. Gotta double their big guy. Can’t let him get easy scores in the paint. We will see if the Dukes can play at a faster pace in transition to help the offense. Turn defense into offense.
