Scouting report: SE Louisiana
No matter who wins this weekend, we’ll see a new school coming to BFS.

I think SELa wins, so im watching some of them.

The qb, Cole Kelly, gets all the hype. He is a BIG dude. Think roethlisberger. Carbon copy of him. Huge, good arm strength, not fast or overly mobile, but he can squirm around In the pocket and is a load to bring down when he does so. If they get in a 3rd or 4th and 1, it’s an automatic conversion for them. He’ll get behind center and just bull forward with virtually no chance to stop it because of his size.

They don’t seem to run a lot of quick hitters like we saw nova and the morehead qb do that gave us so much trouble. They seem to let plays develop more and have Kelly sit in the pocket, go through his reads and survey the field. And they will throw downfield more because of that. That might play to our advantage as the quick hitters were being done to avoid our pass rush and blitzing and have been successful against us. If they don’t do those quick hitters, we need to win at the LOS, as we will get to Kelly. Then we just need to bring him down. Not an easy task. If we can, we could have half a dozen sacks.

On defense, they look more quick than big. Nichols was opening huge holes running the ball. If we can’t run on them, we won’t be able to run on anyone in the playoffs. I think they will have a lot of trouble stopping us. If we play to our game and Cole is on, we could our up 50+ on them.

Not feeling great about this game. Is Cole Kelly good or does SLC stink on defense?

Cole Johnson vs. Cole Kelly?

IMO there’s only room for one QB named Cole at BFS, and he plays for JMU.

Great analysis. Thanks!

I wonder what has the best defense they have seen. It looks like 4-7 McNeese who they beat by a FG 23-20.

They have certainly not seen a defense like ours and I predict they are going to have big trouble with it.

They have a Cole of their own. I believe the key is to pressure Cole Kelley early and often. Make him run for his life. He isn't going to be connecting with targets if he is too busy trying to get Mike Greene's face out of his grille.

SELA doesn't care a lot about defense themselves. Their opponents have averaged nearly five touchdowns a game.

If we take care of the ball and make Cole Kelley's life miserable, and we will, then we win by at least three touchdowns.

RE: Scouting report: SE Louisiana
I watched both Nicholls games with SELA and the McNeese game so far.

Nicholls D was horrendous. They couldn’t tackle to save their life. So that really made SELA look good.

That said, Kelly is a good passer. And they have some speed at receiver. They won’t run much.

Their defense is what you would expect from a school in Soft Houston’s former league. We will move the ball all day and score at will on them. Harry can take the day off. We just need to make sure those points are worth 6 and not 3.

I’d predict a 52-31 dukes win.

RE: Scouting report: SE Louisiana
SE LA's stellar wins (8) were against:

0-11 HBU (Houston Baptist)
4-7 Central Connecticut State
4-7 McNeese State (twice by 3 points each time) McNeese lost to Divison II West Florida
3-8 Northwestern State (twice)
6-5 Nichols State (beat them once, lost once)
3-8 North Alabama

Not a great resume.

I think we will smoke them if that's who we play.

If it is SE LA, the game will be won on the DL. Control that without blitzing, and we'll dominate. If Kelly has time, our secondary will get torched.

Yep. I do get some vibes from the 2016 SHSU game but I had much more faith in our secondary that year

Could FAMU pull off the road upset and give JMU an easier first game? I haven’t seen them play so I have no idea if they can compete or if they are a 9-2 paper lion.

I would personally prefer for FAMU to win this matchup as that would mean the Marching 100 would be coming to Harrisonburg. What a musical matchup!

SELA's numbers are padded the same way "Soft Houston" were with Jeremiah Briscoe. I expect we humble them much the same way 65-14.

Could be closer than we think. FAMU's two losses are FBS USF and 7-6 to Jackson St. all the way back in the opener. Otherwise, they've pretty much handled business. Looking forward to watching this one Saturday night.

RE: Scouting report: SE Louisiana
I watched a bunch of the Towson game (so you don't have to) and first off HOLY POOP I WILL NOT MISS FLO.

Second off, the runs seemed to work finally, with a different approach. Clearly interior runs are going to be a problem, and part of why the passing has been such a success is that teams have been selling out to stop the run. A bunch of the TDs came as Towson had both safeties up on the line, so if you beat your one man, you're home free. So, it's possible for a defense take away one element of your game, and I think some teams have just been doing that for the JMU zone runs.

Ways to combat that are:
1) bite the bullet and throw it. CoJo has the head and the arm for it, and with a little play action, there will be a lot of open men. There are plenty of ways to stretch the field both vertically and horizontally, and throwing deep at will and whining about "we can't run it like we used to" is like getting a free Porsche and complaining about the paint color.
2) misdirection runs. Some of the plays that really worked against Towson were faking inside zones and then running the other direction, sweeps, and other things. Sure, we all prefer just run it right over guys, but if they won't let us, then just use other tools.

This is a pretty good offense, and a truly superior defense. As long as we don't give up dumb penalties or waste plays on no-gain runs that we have proven we can't do, we should have a deep run.

I think they give us a run for our money but I think we just have to put pressure on there QB that’s the best they got, then they lost to incarnate word whoever the hell that is, plus we have the best offense in the fcs and there know to let up big points so if we score and hold there QB we will be fine
