Last time ever: FCS Playoff predictions
I will miss the playoffs. I love the excitement of do or die football.
but it's the right time and the right conference for us to move on. Excited for the future!
so here we go....last playoff run. If we can solve our ground issues, i don't see anyone beating us. That's a big IF though. nothing to date has indicated we will solve that problem.
It's a more wide open field than the last few years. Lots of possibilities for big upsets.
Here are my picks:
First round
Incarnate Word over Stephen F Austin
UT Martin over Missouri State
Holy Cross over Sacred Heart
SD State over UC Davis
Southern Ill over South Dakota
Kennesaw over Davidson
Eastern Wash over No Iowa
SE Louisiana over FAMU
Second Round
Sam Houston over Incarnate Word (think this will be VERY close. I can see UIW winning)
Montana St over UT Martin
Villanova over Holy Cross
South Dakota St over Sacramento St
NDSU over Southern Illinois (will be a close game)
Kennesaw over ETSU
Eastern Washington over Montana
JMU over SE Louisiana (will be high scoring and game makes me a little nervous as matchups are not great in this one for us. We will need to score 45+ to feel great)
Quarterfinals
Sam Houston over Montana St
Villanova over South Dakota St
NDSU over Kennesaw (bad matchup for KSU. another cakewalk draw for NDSU)
JMU over Eastern Washington (was not super impressed with EWU when i saw them. Overrated QB that hasn't seen a defense like ours)
Semi Finals
Villanova over Sam Houston
JMU over NDSU
Final
JMU over Villanova
Dukes go out of FCS in style. No mention of CAA when collecting the trophy.

I think we can put to bed whether or not we can solve our running issues. It'll be our 12th game. Lets just hope whoever we play struggles defending the pass. Montana has their own version of a jimmy moreland with Justin Ford having 8 picks this year to lead the FCS

Yep. I agree. It doesn't look good.
we can only hope HCCC is holding something back that he doesn't want to show on tape. I seriously doubt it, but that's about all we can hold on hope for.

Of course our side of the bracket is the toughest.
If we won this year, you could argue (depending who wins) this could be our toughest route to a NC. Montana will be a big battle even before getting to NDSU.

Good stuff! I agree with you all the way to the quarterfinals. I believe Kennesaw may take down NDSU in their own igloo, even though I hope it is us who ends their championship run the following week. And, I like Montana State over Sammy, who I still believe is overrated.
One thing is certain, I will be very happy to leave behind a subdivision where playoff contenders are named Incarnate Word and Sacred Heart. It looks like we belong to an inner-city high school Catholic league!

Thanks to covid we do have some players from the 2016 team that played in Fargo so hopefully they help getting the team ready for the atmosphere

Palmer is a good running back and JMU can win the NC with Palmer carrying the ball. If teams stack the middle, Earl Campbell can't run through a brick wall but so many times, so what, let teams sell out stopping Palmer because oh yea, we have a QB that some of you claim should get NFL looks and two really good receivers and a NFL OL prospect.
Do we need 6 running backs to win a couple more games?
Just fuk'n win the NC and be done with it, no excuses

Defense steps up a bit in the rematch, but more importantly the offense gets it together with an extra TD and with Ratke 3/3.

Don't care about anything else but us.
For us, I think we may be looking ahead to NDSU and overlook Montana.

I'm thinking there could be at least one upset along the way.
Maybe KSU throws NDSU for a loop with the triple option. In 2008, Wofford came to BFS with that and almost surprised us.
Maybe Nova, Montana St, SDSU or Missouri St take down SHSU.
Would be a little surprised if everything goes chalk this year.

Anything can happen but if JMU does lose to FAMU or SELO in the fcs playoffs, the Cigs 30-4 record will need an asterisk stating the playoff story is "got owned"
CIG got a whiff card last year. I hope he does not hat trick whiff

I have to think SELA is going to crush FAMU, and then you guys will crush them. Montana is going to be tough, but at home I think you guys take them too...unless the team/coach is looking past them to NDSU.

I agree. I believe Latrele should be our feature back. Our ground game would be running like a Swiss watch right now. I understand all of the reasons it isn't.
Latrele is still dancing too much in the backfield. He should be exploding through the assigned hole. His size, power, and speed can move bodies out of the way.

Yep just need NDSU to having a coaching controversy, their qb to throw 5 picks, terrible coaching decisions and just generally be not a very good team and Kennesaw will have it in the bag!
