Dead last But… new coach, new roster. But they have a coach who is building it up with defense first and if the guys buy in, you can seriously speed up the process much like Iowa state and UC

they were picked horribly... but likely to be good, they picked up some underrated transfers ... they wont be top 25 good, but they'll be making an argument for an atlarge come tourney time

something that i think this game reveals that i think is interesting

when memphis selling point when they were playing overmatched opponents on offense was passing and unselfishness ...
that has been their weakness vs a team with a real defense

there is a clear difference in passing to 4 wide open players and deciding which assist you want ..and passing when there is only one open player having to figure out who the smart pass in.. or no one is open and having to draw defenders to make double teams and finding the open man from your double

If penny does f this up and miss the tourney this year, I do think it’s time to move on.

He’s not improving as an offensive coach and he’s not demanding his teams protect the ball. They are trash on offensive. And I bet some 5 stars in that locker are going to regret their decision to play for him

they'll get better.. this might actually be the best thing for them

brown proably couldnt overstep penny prior to this game...the coaches probably couldnt overstep bates and duren prior to this

a bad loss allows you to restructure power

but if im honest, i still have memphis beating cincy... but uc would have a chance..i dont think uc is built to take advantage of Memphis weakness like iowa state is

I think if UC played Memphis today the game wouldn’t get out of the 50’s… and UC would be right there. Don’t know if we win. But also don’t think UC has even come close to hitting its peak either.

That offense can be shut down with relentless defense tho. That’s for certain.

iowa state won with athleticism and length (from guards and wings).. length and athleticism that cincy doesnt have.. iowa state flat blocked or altered like 7 shots tonight...and almost ever shot had to be off the dribble (becuase they couldnt shoot straight up over the defender)

most of the game, cincy is 6'0, 60, 6'5... memphis 6'8, 6'7, 6'5 guard scorers would have an easier time just shooting over yout players... and arkansas had a 6'6 wing outrebounding your center... duren and williams likely to have a field day

also im not sure how cincy is going to score on memphis

Memphis, your basketball program is a joke. That was simply an embarrassing and pitiful performance. Undisciplined, garbage ball. Well at least you can look forward to being the king of a conference with such giants as Rice, North Texas, Tulane, FIU, UTSA and ECU.

it wont happen but here is how i would fix memphis if iwas incharge

1) move bates to the bench, he isnt a pg.. but at this current time he isnt better than nolley or lester to justify him starting either (he'll still get minutes)

2) limit the minutes of lomax, i actually think he's become a very good player, just not what memphis needs.. his biggest selling point is defense, memphis has 100 defensive players .. no shooting lacks speed, just an average passer

3) have A sit down talk with harris or timberlake..offer them the main pg job.. but with lots of stipulations... "we arent offering you the starting job to score.. you are the assist guy".. harris you have speed, timebrlake you can overpower most pg (that theyll need help) ..you DO NOT take more than 6 shots a game..your job is simply to beat your initial defender off the dribble, draw a new defender, and swing it to the open man.. preferably A shooter

4) focus the offense on nolley and lester...hype season was fun, now its over back to reality.. nolley is a returning 1st team all-conference scorer, why that baton was passed to freshmen was always foolish

the new offense is getting the ball to nolley and lester for catch and shoot 3s .. similar to houston the last few years... (1 passer 2 shooters... galen--armoni and corey davis..... dejon-- grimes amd saser)..with 2 monster rebounders in the post..

5) trade hardaway jr minutes for john camden

Camden has a foot injury. Apparently can't play yet. He can shoot, but he can't run and cut.

P.S. We played our worst game since the 40 point Tulsa blowout. We have the best D in the country, and our O was ranked in the 60s for a change, but tonight, we threw away whatever we had learned. Penny said in the presser that players thought ISU would be an easy win, so they decided to play iso and get theirs. He actually said that.

Honestly, I have no idea what's the real issue. But it's not that we're running an AAU offense. That's lazy criticism. It's an NBA offense, and we have had games this year where we ran plays and did well against lesser teams, so we DO know HOW to run an O, but apparently we choose not to do it, or have difficulty doing it against better defensive teams, then get frustrated, and play hero ball, as usual.

Whatever it is, I thought Larry would be able to help. Penny can obviously teach defense. Either Penny isn't listening to Larry, or the kids aren't listening to anybody.

Until we figure out our offense, I think we will have more games like this. A number of tough OOC games coming up, mostly SEC teams, so it's now or never, almost. OTOH, I have to think we have so many new players that eventually they will improve, and by March we should be a lot better. Our D will always be good. But I think we're going to cost ourselves a few seed lines, even if we eventually figure this out.

And IMO, Penny is contributing to the turnover and lack of O issues by playing the entire roster, and making so many lineup changes that nobody can get an offensive flow going.

But nobody is going to fire Penny any time soon, lol. We don't want to go back to the Pastner or Tubby days. Maybe he gets frustrated and quits eventually, but I doubt it.

Lol this was solely a jab at Memphis fans who posted yesterday they had the number one D on kenpom. It’s too early to know how we all stack up but yes there will be some good battles for sure
