Defensive Adjustments
After all the angst re our defense - was it ever better than yesterday (garbage time aside)? I sure hope yesterday’s team shows up Friday. All the pleas for adjustments were answered yesterday.

Also, I am beginning to think Des would look great in a Browns’ uniform next year. QB mobility and size are becoming requirements in the NFL. Could Des be another Lamar Jackson in the making? He sure made some nice throws yesterday.

Des had a lot of good throws, and it seemed that they starting using the slot receiver like it's designed to. Getting Tucker multiple touches will only make us better. I like Michael Young a lot, but he does drop a lot of easy ones.

I think Cleveland should be looking for an upgrade. Des ain't it, he may make Baker look like Aaron Rodgers.

Anyone think Des would not be better than what Detroit rolled out today, or the crippled Mayfield?

RE: Defensive Adjustments
In terms of adjustments I hope we bring our "A" run defense game on Friday. I don't know if any of you have watched some ECU games this year but that Mitchell kid is a talented back. He's got about 1,100 yards rushing [9 TDs] and 300 yards receiving [1 TD] on the year. He plays bigger than his size in terms of physicality and he's pretty quick. I hope Fick and Tressel are staying up late and locked in on stopping/limiting this guy.

It wasn't so much our defense making adjustments as it was us playing a team who decided to play modern football against us. If a team attempts to pass first and most against us, it likely won't go well at all...the problem is when teams load up and run on our front 6, something SMU is deathly allergic to.

SMU tried to run on us early but gave up fairly quickly.

Completely agree with this. I'm not sold on our run D yet. ECU is going to bring it 70% of time. We'll see how far we've come this week.

9 passes and 9 rushes in the 1st quarter (with one being a scramble). That ratio was closer to 3/15 in our last few games.

SMU also had 61 yards on those 9 rushes (not including the -7 for sack yardage). So it wasn't like we were very successful against the run on defense in the 1st quarter either. They abandoned it because our offense found the end zone and forced them to, not because our defense did anything to make it hard on them. I LOOOOOOOVED what we did against the pass, but the most important thing for us was getting up by 2-3 scores quickly and forcing the opponent to have to make up points and lengthen the game to do it.

Bolded, that says it all really don't you think? When our offense has a slow start it opens the door wide for all sorts of calamity. A similar start Friday @ ECU could help take their crowd out of the game quickly and force their offense out of its comfort zone.

I'm curious about this: will UC play better in front of a large, hostile crowd than they did in the half empty stadia at South Florida and Tulane? History is mixed this year; Notre Dame energized the team on many levels and we had a large fan turnout too. Ditto Indiana for a strong UC contingent but it took the entire first half for UC to get going. ECU is already bowl eligible so they're really only playing for the upset and for their seniors perhaps. The Bearcats have more on the line than ever in our program's 136 year history.

RE: Defensive Adjustments
Against the run our defense is kind of designed to give up some runs. Really against the run the defense is trying to:
1. Create some Havoc by making some plays at or behind the line of scrimmage
2. Avoid giving up big runs.

By design teams can have some success on the ground if they are willing to get into a lot of third and short circumstances (and go aggressively on 4th down). You get in enough of them, we're likely to stop them and get off the field.

The defense is designed to suffocate the pass. Make teams get into a ton of 3rd down situations and create turnovers in the passing game.

Good offenses don't want to be in a lot of third down situations. They aren't as prone to take what UC is giving them with the run. Good offenses know the importance of explosive plays to score a bunch of points. It's why I still have a ton of hope for this defense against the elite teams. I honestly won't mind if they (OSU/Georgia/Bama) want to play ball control and 4-5 yard run their way down the field. That puts a lot on them to be perfect. And I trust our secondary against anyone. They are elite.

I know you're more down on Des that most, but what he's doing this year is incredibly impressive. He's not at OSU or Bama throwing to receivers open by 5-10 yards every damn play. His anticipation on where receivers are going to be and how they are going to come open has been extraordinary this year. Look at his placement on the Tucker seem route in the second half, or two of the tucker across the middle plays, or the second pierce TD. Nearly all those are pinpoint perfect before the receiver gets to the spot.

UC doesn't run some gimmick offense making simple reads for the QB and inflating completion percentage. He's making NFL reads and going through his progressions. Our offensive line is good, but it's definitely the weakness and he takes plenty of hits while delivering these balls (again go check that tucker pass down the seem from Saturday).

It's so hard to know which QBs will succeed in the NFL and which won't, but from what I've seen from Des this year, his absurd development over the course of 4 years, his work ethic and his leadership, Des is a hard guy to bet against.

I will say this, I think if Josh Allen would be having a better year it would help Des out as far as NFL prospects go. Both of them have similar accuracy issues (although Des has a bit more question on his deep arm strength than Allen did, countered by his athleticism being a bit better). If you have a guy who has a similar pre-NFL scout (lesser competition, accuracy issues, but strong arm and athletic) proving that accuracy issues can be fixed after this many years playing the position it would probably make more people think Des is a better "ceiling" prospect. Problem is, Allen is proving it isn't that easy...I think the best thing for Ridder would be going late in a round to a team who doesn't need to throw him out there ASAP, because if he's playing for the Lions, Texans, Browns, etc. and overthrowing or underthrowing guys in year one, he'll be out of the league by the end of his first contract (a la DeShone Kizer).

Josh Allen completed 56 percent of his passes as a sophomore and 56 percent of his passes as a junior.

Des is completing 66 percent of his passes at 8.7 yards per attempt as a senior. That's really accurate.

I know we kill him for when he sails a ball or 2 over the middle, but Des has been high completion percentage for 2 years now while not playing in a offense that is getting cheap completions.

How does that look adjusted for air yards though...that's the problem I see. I know that you know competition percentage is in no way a true measure of accuracy.

He's at 9.4 Adjusted Passing Yards Per Attempt. He was 8.6 last season. My point isn't just completion percentage, it's that Dembrock doesn't really give Des a lot of cheap passing yards. Des is asked to make more difficult, more precision throws than most qbs across the country.

There is literally zero comparision between Des and Josh Allen. Josh Allen is a complete freak of nature and although isn't having the year he had last year is still 9th in QBR after being an MVP candidate last year. He's still probably the #2 QB you'd want to build a franchise around for the next 10 years; maybe 3 if you're a big Herbert fan. If you want to look at college numbers Josh was playing with guys who are in working construction now. Des is playing on a team that's been ranked in the top 3 for over a month and probably has NFL draft picks at every position group. Josh Allen can throw a ball through a brick wall.

I'd almost call them completely opposite prospects. Josh Allen was all about projecting his off the chart physical tools despite lack of production. Des is about as finished a prospect as you can have as a 5th year senior who will finish with 50+ starts. I don't think these guys are similar players but Des would have more in common with Burrow in that they're 5th year guys who have played on teams that have a talent advantage almost every week.

Does APY factor RYAC out of their calculations? Genuinely cannot remember.

RE: Defensive Adjustments
Keep in mind all of the jet sweeps we’ve been running this year go down as completions.

I think all football should be viewed from the endzone. He misses so many throws that should be completions. Just flat out misses them. You can see it so easy looking straight on. That's how it looks when you are playing it. There's a reason Madden does it that way. His reads are good. His execution is sometimes not.
