Gulf Coast Showcase
This should be a good tournament to really gauge where we are at. Three games in three days should also be a good preseason test for the CUSA tournament in March (hopefully).

Here's the schedule (all times Central). All games are at the Hertz Arena in Estero, Fl., and are being live streamed by flohoops (for a fee).

Monday, Nov. 21
Rice (3-1) vs Evansville (2-3), 10 am
Vermont (3-1) vs Oakland (2-2), 12:30 pm
Akron (2-1) vs Fordham (2-2), 4 pm
Appalachian State (2-2) vs Delaware (2-1), 6:30 pm

Tuesday, Nov. 22
G1 loser vs G2 loser, 10 am
G3 loser vs G4 loser, 12:30 pm
G1 winner vs G2 winner, 4 pm
G3 winner vs G4 winner, 6:30 pm

Wednesday, Nov. 23
7th place game, 10 am
5th place game, 12:30 pm
3rd place game, 4 pm
championship game, 6:30 pm

Kenpom ratings entering the tournament are (from top to bottom) Vermont 95, Akron, 120, Rice 141, Oakland 155, Delaware 158, Appalachian State 185, Evansville 205 and Fordham 271. The best win belongs to Oakland (beating #34 Oklahoma State at their place by 1 point). Other top wins include Vermont over #91 Yale and Oakland over #127 Toledo. So I think it's pretty safe to say that our 2nd game (regardless of whether we're in the winners bracket or the losers bracket) is shaping up to be a challenge. Akron in the other bracket probably has the best loss of anyone in the tournament, with a 1 point loss at Ohio State.

For Rice, no Quincy Olivari. And our 1st win over Pepperdine looks a little less impressive after they were blown out at UC-Irvine last night.

FIFY.

FGCU's home basketball court is Alico Arena in Fort Myers.

Excellent update.

RE: Gulf Coast Showcase
I've settled on what I'll call the "Rice Five Factors" from what I've seen so far from the team. Essentially, on offense we know that we'll struggle against teams that defend the 3-pointer well and who force turnovers. On the other end, our interior defenders are weak, we haven't been great defending in transition, and we're susceptible to aggressive offensive rebounding. Below is how the tournament teams rank in terms of: eFG% in transition, FG% at the rim, defensive TO%, defensive 3FG%, and OREB%.

Evansville (KP 206): 354 / 302 / 189 / 253 / 352
Vermont (KP 95): 281 / 31 / 258 / 36 / 341
Oakland (KP 155): 317 / 152 / 72 / 24 / 63
Akron (KP 120): 6 / 25 / 217 / 39 / 17
Fordham (KP 271): 195 / 88 / 134 / 187 / 149
App St (KP 185): 189 / 85 / 278 / 102 / 186
Delaware (KP 157): 265 / 258 / 214 / 357 / 90

So basically, on paper, Evansville and Delaware look like the most favorable matchups and Akron looks terrible for us.

For reference, this is how our past opponents have looked in these five metrics. As is clear, there is basically no relationship between the numbers and the results. Which is to say all of what is above is likely pointless. But when has that ever stopped me.

Pepperdine: 194 / 205 / 171 / 299 / 177 (W19)
Houston: 39 / 182 / 33 / 49 / 37 (L33)
Southern: 108 / 304 / 34 / 82 / 309 (W18)
UNO: 193 / 221 / 240 / 103 / 165 (W5)

That is a really good analysis and I’m totally willing to overlook that clear lack of correlation. Cheers!

Interesting ... and thanks.

For comparison, how does Rice rank in the corresponding opponents' stats for these Five Factors?

Anyone know if the FloHoops stream will cost money or do they just make you create an account?

Evansville with 3 3 pointers in 3 possessions to take early 9-2 lead. Tried to penetrate in possession four and was easily stripped

12-7 at what I'm pretty sure is the U16. No clock on the score bug.

Yeah he also has a 3-pointer. So that's great news. But the bad news is Evansville is red hot in shooting. They have to cool off eventually.

UE is mostly hapless trying to go inside on offense, but they're making it work passing around the perimeter until someone has space and shooting the lights out early. 23-16 in favor of the Aces.

Evansville has a guy (Smith) who is averaging 2 points a game who is already 4 of 4 in 3-pointers. Rice down 10. Not good.
