Gulf Coast Showcase
This should be a good tournament to really gauge where we are at. Three games in three days should also be a good preseason test for the CUSA tournament in March (hopefully).
Here's the schedule (all times Central). All games are at the Hertz Arena in Estero, Fl., and are being live streamed by flohoops (for a fee).
Monday, Nov. 21
Rice (3-1) vs Evansville (2-3), 10 am
Vermont (3-1) vs Oakland (2-2), 12:30 pm
Akron (2-1) vs Fordham (2-2), 4 pm
Appalachian State (2-2) vs Delaware (2-1), 6:30 pm
Tuesday, Nov. 22
G1 loser vs G2 loser, 10 am
G3 loser vs G4 loser, 12:30 pm
G1 winner vs G2 winner, 4 pm
G3 winner vs G4 winner, 6:30 pm
Wednesday, Nov. 23
7th place game, 10 am
5th place game, 12:30 pm
3rd place game, 4 pm
championship game, 6:30 pm
Kenpom ratings entering the tournament are (from top to bottom) Vermont 95, Akron, 120, Rice 141, Oakland 155, Delaware 158, Appalachian State 185, Evansville 205 and Fordham 271. The best win belongs to Oakland (beating #34 Oklahoma State at their place by 1 point). Other top wins include Vermont over #91 Yale and Oakland over #127 Toledo. So I think it's pretty safe to say that our 2nd game (regardless of whether we're in the winners bracket or the losers bracket) is shaping up to be a challenge. Akron in the other bracket probably has the best loss of anyone in the tournament, with a 1 point loss at Ohio State.
For Rice, no Quincy Olivari. And our 1st win over Pepperdine looks a little less impressive after they were blown out at UC-Irvine last night.
