Plus there was no longer Doc to count on. If Doc were still coaching I would have felt way better going into the game. Don’t know enough about the current coach to comment but I knew Doc’s style. Even if you’d gotten up big he would’ve went conservative and that would’ve been disaster against Zappe and company.

Hate we didn’t beat you at full strength. I do think our O would’ve settled down more and we were getting some stops before the injury. I think we should/could have won. With our offense we just need a few stops. Not even 3 and outs. We never got one against UTSA but our dee is playing better now.

Enough about the game. Everyone says our big rival is Middle and it kinda is by default of being in the same conferences together. But our biggest rival in CUSA has been WE ARE MARSHALL by far. Not even close. It really started on that day after Thanksgiving win stopping your undefeated season. It was ON right then.

Then add in the damn Jon Elmore years in hoops and there was nobody I looked forward to more than Marshall in either sport.

There is no more recognizable name in the G5 than Marshall in my opinion. Yes, a lot of it if not most is due to the time you lost your team. Then when you moved up in football with guys like Randy Moss you started running the MAC. Very high profile players like Leftwich and Pennington too.

You’re limited by the same things like the rest of us. Money. But you’ve done the most with what you have like we’ve tried to do. In both of our cases that has meant mining Florida for football players. We’ve done it all the way back to Dave Roberts and Jack Harbaugh back in the early 90’s and all of our best teams had some Florida boys on the roster.

Our two universities are a couple of the very few that have been able to have pretty damn decent success in the 2 big sports. Very few schools can lay claim to that. Add in that we’re in neighbor states that get made fun of nationally and we’re fine to fight with each other but watch out if an outsider wants to fight with one as we’ll get each other’s back.

I’m hoping we can keep up a series with you guys. You’re a NAME for the average fan. In my opinion. Regardless of how good you are that year. People know Marshall. No other team in CUSA or the Sun Belt have that auto attached swag. We don’t. We’ve been successful as hell but we don’t have the recognition Marshall does.

Gonna miss you guys. Sorry we hurt your boy but that’s part of winning a game sometimes.

Good luck and run the Sun Belt when you get there. Ha.

As I've said before I think both teams and their fans love to "hate" each other. We both know going in that we're both going get the other teams best shot. Don't have to do much motivating to get everybody fired up to play. Just the other teams name gets players and fans ready to rock. I hate knowing after next year it's over. I always liked knowing our games mattered because we were divisional rivals. Not so much after next year. It'll have to be all about pride but I think pride may be enough to keep the rivalry going if there's not too much of a gap till we play again. Good luck Marshall. After next year I hope we lock up again soon.

You will next week tho. We’re never gonna agree but we’d have won with Wells. So therefore I’m not even mad

You can theorize all you want to, but reality is what it is.

For anyone that thinks losing the QB wasn't a big deal. Imagine this game if the shoe was on the other foot and Zappe went down. How that would change the whole gameplan and dynamic of the team.

It happened. It's over. Congrats, WKU. Represent well. It is a shame we did not get to see the outcome with both teams finishing as they started the game.

I haven’t seen anyone say it wasn’t a big deal. But I have a few say that had he not have gotten knocked out of the game that we would’ve lost. We were only down 8 points. Saying you would’ve won for certain is nothing more than pure speculation.

This ^

Nobody said it wasn't a big deal, I suggested it wasn't the dealbreaker they were making it out to be. For all the "momentum" Marshall thinks they had at the end of the half, at the end of the day we still only held them to 2 touchdowns and an 8 point difference. "But our defense was gassed the second half cause our offense was bad!" And our defense didn't have a reason to be tired the first half? You took 7 minutes off the clock on your first offensive drive. Our defense virtually played the whole first half by themselves and still managed to hold you to only those two touchdowns. My favorite part about Marshall is when they're wrong, they can just say, "you dont know anything about football" and they think it makes everything better.

Teams look like world beaters against our passing game and then run out of steam. They get gassed trying to cover our receivers. With that said, Marshall losing their QB definitely changed the dynamic but Zappe and our receivers were bound to start clicking. The game's not over so I'm not counting this one yet though. I really felt it would be a war after Marshall jumped up 14-0 but we have been down in the 2nd quarter in several games this year but ended up making a game of it

That's easy to say when the other teams starting QB is out. It's a shame that we will never know what would have happened if Wells didnt get hurt.

That being said, congratulations.

Come on man you were dogging Wells this whole season for his bad play and now you are going to act like he a difference maker?

He was playing ****** before the hit put him out and if your memory hasnt failed you you will know that Wells was finished even if he was able to play. After a bad play Wells falls apart and after a big hit he starts worrying about the next one. How many times have you said close to that during this season?

Wells was FINISHED at that point and once Western stopped trying to throw deep outs and started working the3 middle that was wide open...Zappe and this Western offense started clicking.

The reason Marshall's defense was looking good early on...
1. Western came out totally different than usual. Throwing deep and 15 yard outs to the boundary. Zappe is a rhythm QB and the middle of the field is his sweet spot and confidence builder. Western failed to go there early.

2. Marshall's game plan was to press the Western's WR on the outs and double on deep balls. Like I said once Western started using the middle of the field that was open from the start. Western was going to score points.

3. at that point Marshall had zero choice but to stop playing press coverage on the 10 to 15 outs to the boundary. Marshall also had no choice but to stop the double team on deep balls and move the safety up to help cover the middle of the field.

Other words Western started playing "Western offense" and Marshall had no chance. If Western came out playing their normal style....what you saw in the 2nd half happens early on.

Like I said Wells had started being a non factor before he got hit. At that point he was finished if he stayed in the game. The only difference is the finial score might have been 14 point. But if Western came out playing the middle of the field earlier...

this ends up 21 to 24 loss for Marshall.

Western has made worse QBs than Wels look great early on in a game but after a few drives that all changed. The same thing had started to happen before Wells went out. I'm not trying to talk crap...I never posted in this thread till now. and I'm not the type to talk crap if I didnt before the game.

Just stating a few things over looked by some Marshall fans that blaming Wells not playing as the reason Western won. I dont believe that's what you actually said. But others have.

Over the last 7 games this Western defense has been the best in CUSA on run defense and 1st or 2nd on scoring defense and in each of those games the other team looked like world beaters early on. Unlike some fans I'm not going to lay all the start of Western on "Western"...Marshall came out pumped with a goo game plan and Western played right into it. Early on but this game was always coming down to Marshall needing to score 35 point or more to win even with that bad start for Western. Something this Marshall offense had not done all season when playing a team with good defense...

Western's defense was playing as good or better than any team in CUSA and since Oct 9th no school has scored more than 21 points against Western. The 3 that managed 21 scored a TD late in the game when they were being blown out

I have to admit I left Huntington a little disappointed I was hoping Western would drop another 60 points on Marshall

I knew WKU would buzzsaw Marshall. Once Zappe gets warmed up and figures out what the D is showing, it's game over. He's the best QB I've seen play in a long time. 5,000 yards is insane. UTSA better be ready because WKU hasn't reached their peak yet.
