Offense(ive)
After five games, two against less than stellar competition, our offense is terrible. Honestly one of the worst i've seen at UNCW. Something is going to have to change or we are in for a long season. Right now we're runnig like a Pinto, not a Buggati.

Here's where we stand in the CAA overall.

#8 64.6 ppg on offense
#9 65.5% FT%
#10 36.7% FG
#8 30.1% 3pt.

For comparisons sake, the Buzz Peterson years were some of the worst in UNCW history on offense.

2010-2011 63.7 ppg, 68.9% FT, 43.4% FG, 36.9% 3pt.
2011-2012 64.9 ppg, 67.9% FT, 41.6% FG, 32.6% 3 pt.
2012-2013 63.3 ppg, 64.2% FT, 41.7% FG, 33.7% 3 pt.

Fortunately, we have a much better defense then during the Buzz years. But a team that wants to finish in the top half of the CAA can't be this bad on offense. For me it all starts with taking the shots you can make. I love the energy of White and what he does on the floor, but he is 2-13 from 3. And nothing in his history shows he's a three point shooter. Oglesby was supposed to be good from three, but he's 4-20 and he only had a small amount of attempts to support his 43% from three numbers. Baker is 1-6. We need to face the fact that several of these guys are not three point shooters and they need to stop taking the three. Oglesby probably needs to give up his PT to Harvey and let's see what he can do. Last year Harvey shot 36% from three and played 26 minutes a game.

Assuming nothing is going on about which we are not aware, your Jamari Harvey for Alex Oglesby swap makes a lot of sense. Alex must be shooting lights-out in practice, but he has yet to show it in games.

That's just beautiful basketball right there. Mid-majors have to do something unique in order to have success and these guys do it. And I like that even when they DO dribble, it's done very strategically or in post-up situations. Every dribble, pass, or cut has a purpose and wears down the D.

James Naismith would undoubtedly appreciate Bellarmine. He invented the game in 1891, but dribbling never occurred to him and wasn't invented until 1901. He loved the addition of dribbling to the game but I'm sure Bellarmine would remind him a great deal of what the game looked like in its infancy.

Against D1 competition we have scored 63, 51, 65, 67 and 66 points. Just wondering when we will break the 70 point mark this year?

When Siddle has a 9, 6, another 6 and 11 game losing streaks....Then that will be a great comparison.

I’m gonna save this post for you.

Look at the offensive production this year. If you think that’s gonna get us wins, I’d love to hear the reasoning.

Fair enough..you save mine and I will save yours. This is NOT McGrath era version 2. CB won 26 games in his 3 seasons with an NBA talent gifted to him from the previous staff.CB left the cupboard completely bare and most of us when reasoning consider that. In addition, offensive production thus far this year has been dismal. We all know that. However it is one facet of the game and successful coaches know in order to offset that the defensive effort will need to compensate that some until the offense begins to click.Thats NOT a huge surprise as we have 10 new faces this year.

--Scored 28 points to help The Burlington School defeat Northwood Temple Academy, 72-52, at home for the state crown
-Collected All-State, Triad All-Star and Hoop State All-Star honors during outstanding senior season
-Missed 2018-19 year at High Point Christian Academy following an injury, but bounced back as a junior to average 15.6 points, 2.9 assists, 1.9 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.8 steals for Piedmont Classical High School’s Bobcats in 2019-20.
-Also played slot receiver and cornerback on the school’s football team and drew attention from college scouts after piling up 555 all-purpose yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions in just four games.
-Played for AAU club Team Curry 17U in Summer of 2020

RE: Offense(ive)
I still like our defensive setup no matter where the offense is right now and that is going to keep us in games. But there is no doubt that our offense is simply not working now, and when we don't score, we can't set up the press. The numbers don't lie.

It's partly personnel, but IMO it's mostly the "plays" we run in a half court set. We don't have any I can see. We are completely reliant on the ability of our players to take someone one on one, penetrate and score or pass. But zone defenses are designed to stop penetration and our offense has no strategy to beat the zone beyond shooting the three. That has to be fixed. It's really hard to evaluate the talent on this team when the offensive gameplan in half court is so anemic. Little to no movement, little to no picks, little to no cuts. We got to watch a great video about the passing game of Bellarmine basktball, but it was really more about movement than passing. And their offense couldn't be more different than ours, and theirs is amongst the most efficient in the country, based on movement, passing and assists.

I am a Siddle fan, but as I said from the start i'll wait until I see what's on the court. Unfortunately, we have some serious issues on offense, and so far I haven't seen any changes(beyond lineups) that leads me to believe our offense is going to improve dramatically. I don't see lineup changes as being the solution. Without some dramatic changes in our offensive scheme, I can't see us finishing above the bottom third of the CAA.

I hope i'm wrong.

On another note, this is a discussion board. I see no problem with realistic evaluations of the coaching, players and schemes, even if they aren't good. Making it personal is the only area I think we should avoid. Coach Siddle is a fantastic guy no matter what you think of his coaching so far. And the guys i've met on the team are equally good guys.

This right here to me is a great example of fair criticism without throwing anyone under the bus. I was not saying nobody should express concern about how the game is being played.

Instead of pointing out that one person isn’t shooting well, and is seemingly taking a lot of selfish shots without success… he said the whole team sucks at shooting. That’s the “right way” as long as you don’t use a name.

Lol

I love y’all. This place, regardless of how you feel about me and my criticisms of this team, has been one bright spot in my life for the past year when everything else has gone to crap.

I still love this basketball team. I want to see Siddle turn this train around. I want to see us as a successful, long term program. I want to see us get good enough to get out of this conference. I want to see our team succeed and drive up donations that bleed into the development of a football team. I want to see UNCW continue to grow at a great pace. I want all of you to have successful and happy lives. I don’t know what my future holds, and I don’t know if I’ll ever see it. If I don’t, I hope you all will. Thanks for reading my Ted Talk.

Out.

RE: Offense(ive)
One real problem is that there no longer is any real press coverage of the team from the Star-News. In the past, there was a symbiotic relationship between the team and the paper. Beat reporters didn't print everything they knew, and in exchange coaches would share insights about what was going on with players and schemes on background. As a result we could read coverage that gave us some sort of sense about what was trying to be implemented and why it was working or not.

Today (with the thankful exception of Scribe Hawk) there seems to be none of that - so people are left to solely speculate on boards like this to try to figure out what the story is.

I thought the Coastal Carolina game was giving us insight into what Siddle wanted his half court offense to look like with the inside penetration-kick it back out against the zone. But that seemed to disappear the last two games.

There are no reporters getting answers as to why that is, and thus we are left to speculate here.

RE: Offense(ive)
Sorry if I came across as a self made judge and jury over this board. Everyone has a right to their opinion. I've followed athletics from way back in the Coach Brooks and Coach Gibson eras. Back when it was Wilmington College. I want so bad for this program to succeed I guess I get overly protective and over think. But I do think we as fans have a responsibility, just like our coaches and players, in making success happen. I will biotch and moan among friends about what I don't think is working for us to get there. I choose not to air our laundry where others outside our little circle to see. Believe me, I am a lot more positive on these threads than I sometimes am around friends and fellow fans. That's my way. Doesn't mean I think everyone else should follow suit.
Through the years I have had times that I nearly hit rock bottom. I have hit my share of roadblocks that have taken away my plans and dreams of living a comfortable, secure life. I have lost much of what I have worked long and hard for. I have been a bitter human being at times. I now try to just move on and enjoy and appreciate what I do have. One thing that at times helped keep me afloat were these threads. You guys have helped me step aside many times from things that were bringing me down. We don't always agree on the topics. And that's a good thing. Being pushed back on and challenged in critical thinking is a healthy thing. I do appreciate you guys. Even when I don't act like it. I know you wouldn't be able to realize it, but thank you for being there when I needed a place to mentally and emotionally escape.
