This is revisionist history. Teams 13 and 14 to C-USA after the second AAC expansion wave were FAU and WKU. Charlotte and UTSA were in the first expansion wave.

This is more accurate. Many will remember that CUSA and the MWC originally planned to merge their conferences together as a response to Memphis leaving. The Merge was almost certainly going to happen before the NCAA shut the move down after it was announced that if they merged one league would forfeit its AQ bid and NCAA units.

In Wave 1 UNT/FIU/Charlotte/UTSA were added and ODU joined. Several months later ECU and Tulane joined the Big East (AAC hand't formed yet) and MTSU and FAU were added. MTSU and FAU were brought in when the decision was made to go to 14. WKU joined 6 months later when Tulsa left for the AAC.

In the end, losing MTSU/WKU/FAU probably helped the SBC's future plans at the time because it removed all opposition to App, and left only Georgia State against Georgia Sothern's addition App was then one of the ring leaders to suggesting Coastal as an Add a couple years later.

You are right, anyway CUSA should have stopped at 12, no matter who the last 2 were.
