On the 4th and inches…
One factor that really screwed us was no timeouts. You could see the indecision on the sideline, and by the time they collected themselves, the play clock was already under 10.
This one is just hard to describe. We will be sick over this for a very long time.

Clark will second guess himself because it is human nature to do so. I guarantee you as UTSA was driving down the field for the game winning TD he said to himself, "I should have went for it."

RE: On the 4th and inches…
The odds of winning by converting 6 inches are so much higher than punting and getting a stop.
The odds of them scoring a TD if they stop you near midfield are not that much higher than if you punt and they have to go 70 or 80 yards.
As it was, it took them about 15 seconds to end up right where they would have gotten the ball on downs.
I am still just shaking my head that we didn’t go for the kill shot there.

To say you did not have time to make a decision when there was a measurement makes the coaching staff look much worse. Only 3 possibilities: 1. you punt, no play thinking needed 2. First down, no play thinking needed as you would take a knee 3. Go for it. So if all the coaches were over there not determining a play call during the measurement it shows they are even more incompetent than first thought.

This!!!
While the officials were measuring, be setting up a play to call to go for it. If it doesn’t look like we will make it or UTSA will jump offsides, then let the clock run and take the delay. We didn’t even line up at the ball. We just stood there for 15 seconds. Our coaches didn’t have the slightest clue on what to do in that situation.

Watch what you say about HCBC. The faithful will wring your neck for speaking bad about their Jesus. We can’t hold him accountable for anything without backlash for doing so

Just a bad decision that's all. Maybe he'll address it next week and to provide some level of closure but that was the bonehead call of 2021. I like Clark and I'll be at the game Friday but this will string all off season.

I think you hit the nail on the head about selling out to stop McBride. I understand the punt. Our defense is our strength and 80 yards with no time outs should be a tough lift.
Let’s go one further-I think we win without the injury timeout

Coaches have to adapt. Saban and Belichick are two of the most famous examples that have. You can still base your offense on the run game and possession with a strong defense while using more modern things like analytics. Let’s say we had a 50/50 chance of converting that 4th down, and a 70% chance of stopping if we didn’t convert. It doesn’t take a mathematician to realize that’s a strong probability of winning. Now, if we back them up another 20 or 30 yards, we maybe have an 80% chance of stopping them.
The thing I hated the most about the decision is we just gave them 30 yards without even trying to slow them down. If that was the plan, it completely negates the punt and takes maybe 15 seconds off the clock.
I slept on it and tried not to overreact in the moment, but the game was ours. We were in the drivers seat to win the west for a fourth straight year. We fought so hard all game, just to give them the ball and a chance. With all that was on the line, that was the single worst decision in UAB coaching history.

So if you know they are going to sellout to stop McBride then AB said it, bootleg/RPO to a tight end. One other thing, it was one chain link away from the 1st down, just put Hopkins under center and he can literally reach the ball over the line to gain and pull it back. As long as the ball crosses the line to gain it's going to be a first down.
Do I punt if it's a yard or more to gain, probably. But it's a chain link away from the 1st down, if you can't get that with McBride or a QB sneak then you don't deserve to win the game. And as it played out, we didn't deserve to win this game.

I would have gone for it. I told my wife we would punt. HCBC is a defensive guy and will put the burden on the defense.
I agree at the sell out to stop mcbride. What worried me about going for it was the idiots spotting the ball.

We needed to put more pressure on their qb. Gave him too much time.

Would not had been an issue had we gone for a chain link to gain 1st down.

If it is a long yard or more, sure, punt. But it was 3 inches. With the way offenses can move quickly, 80 yards in a minute is very doable, this isn’t 1990. Whether you get stopped or punt, odds are high they move into reasonable scoring position with less than 30 seconds to play vs. the certainty of closing them out if you convert 3 inches. I am take my shot at 3 inches every time.

Completely agreed. Like others have said, with the idiotic defense Clark was playing after punting, we essentially negated any benefit the punt gave us in terms of yardage. We were content with them gaining chunks of yards down the field without any real defensive pressure. Our defense had been playing GREAT late in the third and the fourth quarter, but Clark decided to play prevent, rush 3 guys, and let them just eat up chunks of yards. Mind bogglingly stupid.
