Fortunately, all of the teams in close proximity are of great interest to our fan base (ODU, App St, Marshall).

Sometimes you have to stop and realize CUSA just sucks and are easier wins.

Fair point. Looking back at their wins to end the season, their 5 wins were teams that went a combined 21-40, and only 14-36 when you exclude Mid Tenn.

Against the CUSA teams that went better than .500, they were 1-3 in mostly close games:
Lost to WKU (9-5) by 23 and were down 33-6 going into the 4th.
Lost to Marshall (7-6) in OT
Beat Mid Tenn (7-6) by a TD (and while it seems like he played well, it was Mid Tenn's true freshman QB's second game).
Lost to UTEP (7-6) by a TD
Didn't play UTSA (12-2) or UAB (9-4)

I still predict them to look more like the team from the second half of 2021 rather than the 2018 and 2019 teams.

Great analysis. Thanks for proving my point with hard data. They were competitive against the better teams they played though, even if in loss.

Wow, they lucked out of playing CUSA’s two best teams last year. No bowl game if they played even one of those teams.

WKU (sag #46) and Tulsa were decent teams last year, better than any CAA competition by far.

I expect ODU to feel like an upgraded version of Villanova. Beatable, but it won't be a cake walk. They have improved enough that Temple fans are lusting over ODU's coach now. It's clear Rahne is a big upgrade over what they had before.

Probably won't be possible to line up everyone's ideal scenario though. One upside to ODU being so down for a while though, besides getting to laugh at them, they probably aren't really a top 2 or 3 option to anyone else so that might help make it easier to give JMU what we want.

ehhh, slightly disagree here. Yes, they are down and it's fun to laugh at them, but coaches and ADs know it's a recruiting hot bed... the other VA FBS schools don't agree to a home and home because they are nice and equitable.
I think most SBC schools are going to be happy with the chance to go into 757 and show off. Does that make them "a top 2 or 3 option" maybe not, more like 3-4, IMO. All I care about is getting ODUh on thanksgiving weekend.

That isn't gonna make teams want them at home in a specific year knowing they'll fill the stadium for them. JMU is probably the only one that has them at the top of the list in that way right now.

JMU is probably going "we want ODU and App in opposite years so we have one as our big home game each year." If anybody else cares about what year they have them at home it's probably more in the way we care about GS/GSU, because it's one of the less attractive games for their fans. Recruiting the 757 doesn't have anything to do with where teams rank ODU in how attractive a home game is.

I do think that'll change quickly cause I think they're finally getting their **** together but right now I doubt App State is anxiously awaiting the day they get ODU in Boone.

I think this is right. You don’t want ODU and App at home in the same season for reasons of balancing the schedule’s average attendance. The goal being to maximize attendance for purposes of promoting the future expansion of BFS.

Marshall should also be a big game attendance-wise…which (to me) means you should never schedule ODU, App or Marshall as the Homecoming or Family weekend games.

Ultimately, I think our best course of action would be to have parent's weekend and homecoming whenever we are hosting GA Southern/GA State and the western SBC school as those schools would likely have the fewest fans traveling (compared to App, Marshall, ODU, and Coastal). We'll also have the pay game (Ticks/W&M/VMI) each year to host one of sell out games (HC/PW)

Yeah I think the best approach would be FCS opener then Georgia team and SBC west team on HC/FW. In years where we can get a solid FBS out of conference home game, especially a P5, that leaves two of ODU/App/Marshall/Coastal and hopefully someone like ECU, UVA, VT, UNC, Liberty on the three dates besides opener/HC/FW. Very solid shot at six sellouts in that case at least until we expand.

If we decide to go the FCS mid-season route then we could always put that on homecoming then a Georgia team or SBC West team on the opener. That might be better for overall attendance anyway. Of course one other factor is weekday games. Those will likely be one of our best matchups so I sure hope we can still sell out App State or Marshall when it's on a Thursday or whatever.
