Another 3 from Lieppert. He's got 9, all on threes from the right corner. 38-33 Rice at the U4.

Credit to Abercrombie - he's now been on St. Hilaire on multiple possessions and done really well staying in front of him.

45-38 @ half

The good: 8-16 from deep. 63% shooting. 14 assists.
The bad: 9 turnovers. UNO with 10 offensive boards (more than they have defensive boards!)

Good news, we're leading by 7 at the half and scored 45. Offense has looked good when they haven't been careless with the ball in the first few seconds across the timeline.

RE: Men's basketball at New Orleans
45-38 Rice at the half. Some good but probably more bad. Thought the ball movement got crisper as the half went on plus UNO just isn't very good defensively. Fiedler needs to be stronger. UNO has 26 in the paint, 17 from Jackson and Kirkland on 8-12 shooting. They've shown some good post moves, but Fiedler and Poteat are going to see much better bigs this year. If we're getting beat by these guys, that's not a good sign. St. Hilaire just 4-9 and a couple of those were in transition I think. We've defended him really well in the half court.

Also, 8 assists for Mullins at the half. He and Fiedler have run the offense really effectively.

Poteat has gone from an 80% FT shooter to not being able to make one. Has to be mental.

61-55 Rice at the U12. I would love to know what our staff does when they coach defense, because I see very little difference between us and UNO and they're ranked 338th in defensive efficiency.

70-59 Rice at the U8. Good minutes from Lieppert. He's had by far the best energy on our team. UNO offense has been much worse in the second half, in large part because they went away from what was working. Bigs haven't been nearly as assertive this half and our defensive philosophy has been to make anybody but St. Hilaire beat us.

RE: Men's basketball at New Orleans
Not one guy on our team can beat *any* UNO defender 1v1. And it's going to doom us every single time we play a good team. I mean, how can anybody look at what we're running on offense and think this team is going to be significantly better than last year's? This is an *atrocious* UNO defense that has essentially shut us down for 4-5 minutes.

73-69 Rice at the U4. St. Hilaire getting hot from 3 which is basically the only thing that can win UNO the game. That, and the mess that is our offensive execution.

Said for years we need more motion in the offense.........pick and roll, pass and pick away from the ball, etc. 28 3pt attempts says thats not happening. Needed when you can't beat people one on one

79-76 after a really find by St. Hilaire (though it's equally plausible that he was shooting). Gonna come down to FTs.

81-78, 27 seconds left. Rice 10 second violation...not even close to getting the ball to half court. Doomed to start. UNO with a chance to tie, but if I was them I'd attack. I'm betting we're going to be selling to stop St. Hilaire from shooting and we haven't looked confident against pressure.

RE: Men's basketball at New Orleans
Rice wins 83-78. Ugly, ugly, ugly. Obviously better to win than lose, but circling back to FBO's post about the state of CUSA, nothing tonight made me think that right now we're any better than the 7th or 8th best team in the conference. We were way too soft inside (48 points in the paint for UNO) and just overall way too leaky. As bad as the defense was at times, I was more frustrated with the offense. We scored 83 because UNO's discipline (especially against cutters and movement) was awful, but a team like ODU or UNT would've eaten us alive tonight. We looked way too easy to defend for most of the night and we turned it over 18 times.

12 points, 12 rebounds, 7 assists for Fiedler. 11 points, 10 assists for Mullins. Thought Lieppert gave us some really good minutes. 0 minutes for Hutchins and only 12 minutes for McBride, interestingly.
