RE: Cole Johnson to the bigs?
Not a NFL QB, but Cojo has made an incredible leap in performance in his 6th year. Maybe we should get all our players on a 6 year program and dominate the football universe.

He has been good on the throws over the top this year, but I am most impressed with only 2 INT’s in the regular season. Up until this year I held Justin Rascati in highest esteem for valuing possession of the football. Granted, he did it for 3 years in a row. However, for a single season Cojo has set the standard unless he blows up and has a 5 INT game like the Nooch did in the playoffs. I believe JMU is #1 nationally for turnover margin and he is a huge reason for that.

Keep having Turnover free games and JMU can win the playoffs even if his completion percentage is down at 50% -60%. That’s what he did against Villanova and it was good enough to win a high level game except for Ratke’s uncharacteristic 2 misses in the 4th quarter.

Just think, 8 months ago he was benched for Gage Maloney due to lackluster play and high turnovers against the likes of Robert Morris and Elon. And that was as a 5th year senior.

RE: Cole Johnson to the bigs?
Cole just passed the much revered (deservedly so) Vad Lee with 32 touchdown passes in a single season! In one less game.
Time to stop qualifying Cole always in "yeah, but" mode. He is a future JMU Hall of Fame quarterback. Saturday, he threw some of the most beautiful long balls. His height gives him such an advantage. He stands tall in the pocket and with his over the top throwing motion he is really good. He is moving up the ladder of all time great JMU QB's.

He closes out this playoff run strong and wins a ring, he’s going to be in someone’s camp in the preseason.

That’s my quarterback.

RE: Cole Johnson to the bigs?
I'm critical at times with some of the in-game tactics of our coaching staff, but one thing I've been impressed with is the way they've maximized the QB talent. BD and CJ have very different styles but the coaches molded the offense to fit their strengths. Any QB prospect considering JMU should look closely at how BD performed in 2018 vs. 2019, and then how CJ progressed from the spring season to the fall. The growth over time has been tremendous.

RE: Cole Johnson to the bigs?
The 50 year JMU record for TD passes in one game by a QB is 6. That record has been tied once, by the same QB who set the record.

That QB is Cole Johnson.

In the entire history of college football played at any level dating back to the 19th c., one player has kicked more field goals and scored more points than any other kicker who has played the game.

That kicker is Ethan Ratke.

What a special pair of players. What a year in the history of JMU football. All in the year JMU has accepted a move to the highest level of college football in a conference that is ideal in terms of rivals and geography.

It’s time for all loyal Duke FB fans to give thanks this week for all our blessings, eat as much as you can, and enjoy the week-off prior to the start of JMU’s last FCS championship run.

Go Dukes!

Or, maybe it's you who doesn't understand. By any measure, Cole's numbers are gaudy. He is certainly being watched by scouts and coaches across the NFL. He will be given a good look.

I think fishingduke understands this a lot better than you give him credit for.

In college, there are lots of baseball players who slug .600 because of aluminum bats and one-pitch pitchers. Then they get to AA and all those homers turn into flyballs when they hit with wood bats.

Or, by compparison, guys who have incredible control but throw 86 mph and get everyone out in college and low-A, but get shelled in the majors. It's the same thing both with Ratke and with Johnson.

Cole's numbers are, in fact, gaudy. But a major part of the NFL game is simply throwing harder. There are going to be lots of passes that an NFL QB has to make where he's not just as accurate as Cole is, but has to throw the ball with an extra 10 mph because instead of facing the Villanova free safety, he's facing the Raiders' free safety, who could make the olympic track team of over 100 countries.

Did you happen to see Peyton Manning's last year in the NFL? That's a guy who everyone knows has a football IQ off the charts, and could pick apart every defense he faced with ease. However, in his last year, he couldn't push off correctly because of a bad knee, and lost a good 15 mph on his passes. As a result, guys who were open when he threw it weren't anymore by the time the ball got there, or he had to lob them so that defenders had tons of time to jump the route, and he was utterly helpless. His interception rate went through the roof.

That's what happens when you simply don't throw hard enough. In some cases gaudy college numbers translate, and in some they don't. By comparison, DiNucci was both a running threat with the size to take an NFL beating *and* had the raw arm strength to make NFL throws. (He just didn't learn the system, and probably should have been an NDFA and spent a year or two on a taxi squad) Unless CoJo learns some serious mechanical changes to add speed on the ball, he just doesn't have enough raw power to fit the windows.

The similarities with Ethan Ratke are striking. Literally all 32 NFL kickers (plus the ~15 who get cut every year) have the raw power such that if they hit the ball cleanly, it'll be good from 60 yards. (Just like every major-league hitter, if they know what pitch is coming and hit it cleanly, will hit a home run.) If Ratke hits it just right, it'll go about 52 yards. And he hits it just right a lot, which is great, but he simply doesn't have the raw power.

Another comparison - golf. If you hit a driver 250 yards, dead-center on the fairway every single time, and are an ice-cold short-game guy, you'll thrive until you get to the PGA where the distance on your drive will put you 4 strokes per round behind the leaders before you have a chance for a single putt.

Cole's great. And maybe he'll get a look in Canada.
Epic Applause

When a thread is started with such hyperbole there’s only one way to go with it and then for trying to respond objectively somehow you’re considered a hater. Oh well, we’ll have at least 1 game going further to shine for the real scouts and prove the internet scouts correct, and every single person here is pulling for CJ to do his best possible at taking us to the promised land one last time.

Where is the hyperbole? I said I believe Cole Johnson will make it to the NFL. There is nothing hyperbolic about that. Hyperbole might be "Book it, CoJo is going to be the NFL MVP by his second season!"

I simply said CoJo has the tools to make it to the NFL and I then quoted a publication that notes how underrated Cole is.

I don't mind anyone disagreeing with me. Plenty have and believe that Cole will not make it to the next level. That's fine, but it is hardly hyperbole to believe that he will. 04-cheers04-cheers

RE: Cole Johnson to the bigs?
I'd be curious to know the hand size of CJ. I get the impression he does not have big hands, which is a big detriment in the evaluation of pro QBs and could be why he throws wobbly passes at times and his struggle in wet weather. DiNucci does have big hands and Russell Wilson, a short guy, does as well. Something to consider.

Have not read through this bickering monster thread, so forgive me if it's already been discussed.....

I assume on the soon to be revised Walter Peyton award watch list the Cole will not only be on it, but likely one of the favorites.

His passing stats look quite impressive.

They do. And I hope he is considered. He's a great QB for us, and I hope he picks apart the defenses of the 4 teams we have left to play.

And, I told you why. I am not the only one who refused to donate until we made it to FBS.

As for my blog being a side gig, negative! Show me where I said that. I was working 12+ hours every day, including weekends and holidays.

As for my blog being a side gig, negative! Show me where I said that. I was working 12+ hours every day, including weekends and holidays.

First, you owe the DC $50 for b!tching about b!tching about donations but I'm sure you will talk your way around that.

Second, a side gig per the Cambridge Dictionary is "a job that you get paid for doing in addition to doing your main job." You said the blog was "a hobby" that you started in your "spare time" while "a federal contractor" and being a business owner. So yeah, a self described side gig.

As a Lions fan, I can't believe I haven't thought about it from this point of view. It's probably because I no longer consider them NFL caliber.
