I’m not sure how that quote from some other post got on this thread? I was responding on my phone…really confused.
Not trying to stir anything up.

I’ll delete it, since in context of the this thread it made absolutely no sense. 04-cheers

Between Michael Vick and the crop of current dual-threat quarterbacks in the league, there have been a whole lot of what are still called "Pro-style" QBs, classic drop-back passers with limited mobility.

Coincidentally, the new crop of dual-threat quarterbacks (Mahomes, Mayfield, Murray) are Texans, all from DFW except Baker Mayfield, who is from Austin. And, Mayfield is not exactly dual-threat, averaging two scrambles a game for a little over four yards per tote. Also, Mayfield is only 6'1 and Murray is listed at 5'10, but I know people who know Kyler personally and claim that he is more like 5'8.

This year's top high school prospect, also a quarterback, and also from DFW, is Quinn Ewers from Southlake Carroll (Giant should be able to give us the current skinny on this kid). Ewers didn't wait to get to college to take advantage of the new NIL rules. He declined playing his senior season in high school to sign multi-million-dollar contracts with marketing agencies. He just signed one for $1.4 million. I believe this is the third he has signed. The world is changing, and not necessarily for the better! .... Quinn Ewers getting rich in high school

So, did Ewers make the right decision? Is it good for the game? After all, he could suffer a career-ending injury if he played his senior season in high school and he has already accepted a scholly to Ohio State. Suppose he washes out or gets hurt at OSU. He still has his millions of dollars.

I could argue that Ewers made the right decision, but I don't believe the new NIL rules will ever be good for the game. Or, maybe I'm just an old square.

What is your obsession with Flacco? He rode one of the best defenses of all time to the SB. QBs today need to have pocket mobility when facing DEs that run 4.4s. They do not necessarily need to be a dual threat which is what i think youre missing. You also need to be able to scan the field and hit your 3rd or 4th option which has not been the case with Cole. He is a 1-2 read QB which is fine when typically wells and thorton are open but at the next level that wont work. Rarely do you see Cole move around in the pocket and find someone open which is what all NFL qbs are capable of doing.

Cole also needs to get into a rhythm early on in the game if he is going to have a good game. If he starts slow it is typically an average performance for him

Fishing, you're entitled to your opinion, so on this particular issue, I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. Cole finished 21-25, 363Yds, 6TDs, 0 INTs...with a nearly non-existent running game. That's an 84% completion rate. Actually, he should have been 23-25 (two drops). The proof is in the numbers. By any honest measure, he has had a spectacular year. He's smart, he's tough, and he's humble. He's the first one to give credit to his coaches, his receivers, and his line. He's a terrific ambassador for this university, and has made it very clear what JMU means to him. Regardless of what happens the rest of the way, he has nothing to prove to anyone. I, for one, couldn't be more proud of this young man. He patiently waited his turn, never complained about a transfer QB beating him out, and then did his job when the opportunity presented itself. He is a study in perseverance. Something that is sorely lacking in today's, "what's in it for me, immediate gratification" world. GO DUKES!

RE: Cole Johnson to the bigs?
Well said Jayemyoo.

32 touchdowns, 2 interceptions
5 rushing TD’s
68% completion percentage while throwing a ton of deep balls that are low percentage throws and no consistent running game.
2953 yards.

He has had a great year and he had a very good playoff run last year.
Go Dukes.

Or, maybe it's you who doesn't understand. By any measure, Cole's numbers are gaudy. He is certainly being watched by scouts and coaches across the NFL. He will be given a good look.

I think fishingduke understands this a lot better than you give him credit for.

In college, there are lots of baseball players who slug .600 because of aluminum bats and one-pitch pitchers. Then they get to AA and all those homers turn into flyballs when they hit with wood bats.

Or, by compparison, guys who have incredible control but throw 86 mph and get everyone out in college and low-A, but get shelled in the majors. It's the same thing both with Ratke and with Johnson.

Cole's numbers are, in fact, gaudy. But a major part of the NFL game is simply throwing harder. There are going to be lots of passes that an NFL QB has to make where he's not just as accurate as Cole is, but has to throw the ball with an extra 10 mph because instead of facing the Villanova free safety, he's facing the Raiders' free safety, who could make the olympic track team of over 100 countries.

Did you happen to see Peyton Manning's last year in the NFL? That's a guy who everyone knows has a football IQ off the charts, and could pick apart every defense he faced with ease. However, in his last year, he couldn't push off correctly because of a bad knee, and lost a good 15 mph on his passes. As a result, guys who were open when he threw it weren't anymore by the time the ball got there, or he had to lob them so that defenders had tons of time to jump the route, and he was utterly helpless. His interception rate went through the roof.

That's what happens when you simply don't throw hard enough. In some cases gaudy college numbers translate, and in some they don't. By comparison, DiNucci was both a running threat with the size to take an NFL beating *and* had the raw arm strength to make NFL throws. (He just didn't learn the system, and probably should have been an NDFA and spent a year or two on a taxi squad) Unless CoJo learns some serious mechanical changes to add speed on the ball, he just doesn't have enough raw power to fit the windows.

The similarities with Ethan Ratke are striking. Literally all 32 NFL kickers (plus the ~15 who get cut every year) have the raw power such that if they hit the ball cleanly, it'll be good from 60 yards. (Just like every major-league hitter, if they know what pitch is coming and hit it cleanly, will hit a home run.) If Ratke hits it just right, it'll go about 52 yards. And he hits it just right a lot, which is great, but he simply doesn't have the raw power.

Another comparison - golf. If you hit a driver 250 yards, dead-center on the fairway every single time, and are an ice-cold short-game guy, you'll thrive until you get to the PGA where the distance on your drive will put you 4 strokes per round behind the leaders before you have a chance for a single putt.

Cole's great. And maybe he'll get a look in Canada.

Epic Applause

When a thread is started with such hyperbole there’s only one way to go with it and then for trying to respond objectively somehow you’re considered a hater. Oh well, we’ll have at least 1 game going further to shine for the real scouts and prove the internet scouts correct, and every single person here is pulling for CJ to do his best possible at taking us to the promised land one last time.

RE: Cole Johnson to the bigs?
You have to understand that the football scouting department at the Powdered Wig Society is known to be weak. Back when he was Bulldog, he looooooooved Birdsong. Birdsong went to Marshall, got benched, was okay at Tennessee Tech, and never heard from again. Purple thought DiNucci was better than a multi year NFL starter Andy Dalton. Wrong! The Nooch is without a team, while Dalton just threw a TD for the Bears today. Take his projection of Cole Johnson as NFL material with a grain of salt.

All three were good FCS quarterbacks. All three were Dukes, and I loved them while they were here. But I don't let my purple shades skew my vision when it comes to their pro potential. I appreciate Purple's right to have an opinion on Cole's future, but I don't appreciate people being made to seem crazy when they disagree.

I do not think Cole is a prospect for the NFL. But I do think his accomplishments have been downplayed by several on this board. But it is a message board and it is all good. Just purchased my playoff tickets. Excited for the last go round.

I don't believe Cole will get drafted but I do think he will get picked up as an undrafted free agent. He has put up great numbers with a mostly young offensive line. Seems like he has improved with his progressions/reads and only 2 INTs. He's also able to run or scramble when he needs to and is deceptively fast once he gets going down the field. I think his arm strength is fine but does throw some wobblers at times. I good NFL QB coach may be able to help him step his game up even further.

These threads are the worst. Fans of a player that has done great things at JMU, end up having to dump on the player in order to reign in excessive adulation and improbable achievements.

I appreciate Purple's right to have an opinion on Cole's future, but I don't appreciate people being made to seem crazy when they disagree.

The Nooch is on the Cowboys practice squad

I stand corrected, but my point remains.

Yeah, you are wrong again. Slink back into the shadows, troll.

Surprise, surprise. Wrong again. JMU grad and long time lurker who finally grew tired of your shtick. Sorry if I hit a nerve.

Allow me to make it less personal and stick to the topic. Cole Johnson is a very good quarterback. Yes, he is tall like Joe Flacco. That's where the similarities end. I'd like to be wrong, but in my opinion, he's not an NFL quarterback.

First of all, you make me sick by invoking the name of my blog, of which I am very proud and about which you know nothing. Are Donald Trump and his staff regular readers of anything you have written? Have you made six figures a year from writing ANYTHING? Have you been the target of Big Tech, namely Fascistbook, Twitter, and Google, because you don't share their leftist political leanings?

You are very good at condescension. Your first words, "You have to understand" suggest that you are teaching something to everyone else here because you are smarter than the rest of us. Why don't you identify yourself, genius, so we know who to thank for the education you are blessing us with?

Thank you so much for giving me the "right to have an opinion." Now, show me where I made "people seem crazy when they disagree." Go ahead, show me!

That's right, you can't because I made no one here "seem crazy" for disagreeing with me on Cole's potential.

By the way, Birsdsong wasn't "benched." He started for Marshall and was then injured. The fact that you don't know that is not surprising.

Whoa! Donald Trump reads you. I can't believe I thought you didn't know what you were talking about.

Go back to that which you are good at.... lurking and jerking.

I tried to move on to the topic but you keep making it personal. You are getting more creative. I thought you might call me smelly. I know how much that hurts the bisons. For someone who considers me a troll, you let my opinion get to you quite a bit.

Cole has many, many things they are looking for at the next level. The most important trait he may have, with regard to getting a next level look imo is his ability to care for the football, he treasures it and is not reckless.

He closes out this playoff run strong and wins a ring, he’s going to be in someone’s camp in the preseason.

That’s my quarterback.

I agree. At least a UDFA, possibly a late-round pick like Nooch. Given a good playoff run, I would not be surprised to see him chosen as high as the fourth round.

I’m glad we have folks supporting Cole, even if outlandish in their approach.
