RE: ***Game Thread*** UAB v South Carolina
Ertel's mechanics problem is a big deal. I know I harp on it, but one reason he has to work so hard on the bounce is that he can't catch and shoot cleanly like he should be able to do because of that crappy footwork. Defense knocks him off balance coming off rotation or screen, and the smart play for him there (because they do respect his shooting due to that one game at ULM where he bombed about a dozen 3s) is to drive. At UAB so often, he literally doesn't get to the 3 attempt at all because of this flat-footed hitch.

If he were less defendable on 3s, say making 2 more a game, it would open so much of the floor for everybody else and he could stop expending so much energy driving the ball (which he's very good at, BTW) and more of his energy being a pest on D.

Go watch Steph Curry. Yeah, it's Steph Curry. But don't even look at the makes or misses. Just watch his feet. That man is shooting the ball before it's ever in his hands. He also figured out very quickly (in college) that if you are a good shooter and you know your range, a 30-foot 3-pointer is a far superior and makeable shot for him than a 15- to 20-footer, and the numbers bear that out in a big way. Yeah it's Steph, the greatest shooter in basketball ever. But it's true for ANY shooter worth a damn, including the goons down at the rec. Ever been in the gym with an old man who can still score on the young legs? Watch their feet. They get rhythm shots off from deep, and make them, because of what they do without the ball below their knees.

Don't get me wrong, I love Ertel's game and his grit. He's a baller. Just want to see him max his ability. GET RID OF THOSE FLAT FEET BRO and watch what happens.

I think Ertel's shot is pretty wonky anyways, not even taking the foot work into consideration.

I think Ertel was a catch and shoot guy the year he shot .444 from three. It’s also the most threes he’s taken in a year.

His attempts went way down once he got to UAB, which goes back to my point that we don’t do a good job of getting guys open.

Ertel had some good looks last night. A couple late AK mentioned without bringing up names. If we're going to be a good team, somebody has to knock those down. I was hoping JJ would be that guy but he is off to a miserable start (3-16 3pts). He shot 155(!) 3's last year and knocked down 36.1%. Perplexing.

I was hoping JJ would be that guy but he is off to a miserable start (3-16 3pts). Johnson shot 36% and 38% from 3 the last two seasons in the SEC.

I don't disagree that he had a couple of good looks, but they mostly came off broken plays. He needs to knock some of those down, but it's a different mindset when you know you're about to get the ball to shoot versus randomly getting the ball out of chaos.

JJ is another great example of a guy struggling to find quality shots in the flow of the offense.

For some of these guys who are just good versus great shooters, shot quality is important. It's rare that we ever get an open three; there's almost always a guy within two feet of the shooter.

I can't really put my finger on it, but there's something about AK's offense that makes things harder than necessary. We do a lot of dribbling, but I don't see a lot of off-ball movement from the other guys. Having two bigs in the paint doesn't help.

As bad as our shooting percentage and free throw shooting was, especially in the first half, we played an SEC team to a standstill and damn near beat them. That's the first time our team, especially the transfer guys, have played together against a legitimate NCAA team. That's a pretty good omen, I think.

I seem to recall him pulling up for three a ton in his highlights, but I can’t say I’m 100% correct in my memory these days. Last year was probably confusing for him with the position change and his role. This year he was clearly our sixth man, and I had high hopes with the players around him that he would start scoring like crazy. It hasn’t happened quite yet, but there is still time. He was the one guy who kept us in it somewhat in the first half by getting to the rim.

I don’t feel like we were scared. I don’t feel like it was lack of effort. I don’t feel like it was scheme or players. Sometimes the shots just don’t fall. We won the turnover battle. We got steals at our normal pace. We hung with them on the boards. This was the first road game these guys played together, and while it wasn’t Rupp arena, it wasn’t @FAU either. I’m disappointed we couldn’t pull it off, but I still have high hopes for this team, and one close game on the road won’t change my opinion.

Ertel had some great looks for someone with good footwork. They were low-percentage misses for him.

Compare one of Ertel's shots to the 3 made by Brown.
5 misses by Ertel were bad footwork on every one of them.
The make by Brown was textbook footwork. He was ready to shoot that ball before it ever got to his hands, and he caught it in rhythm stepping into the shot.

Ertel will make a lot more 3s if he cleans that up.

It has reached the point with him over 2 years of watching him that I can call miss/make before he even is in motion, and I'll get it right without even watching to see whether it went in. I don't even have to look at the basket to know. And I'm never wrong about it, either.

I suspect that DD has watched more hoops than the three of us put together. You know that he's not wrong that catching the ball with your feet set ready to shoot in rhythm is the preferred method. You can watch tape from last night and see if that was happening or not.

He's 100% right on this. Instead of Curry, I will use Vaden as a UAB specific comparison. Dude would be ready to catch and shoot from anywhere and had great footwork coming off screens. he would already be going up in his shooting motion coming off the screen before he caught the pass sometimes and could get his shot off quickly and under pressure.

Vaden is a great example. Marvette McDonald is another one.

Let’s not get it twisted — over a season and 4 games Mike has been our highest scorer. I love his game. But he could do a lot more with less effort with some work in this area

All your points about footwork, etc are valid, BUT, there is another important part of the equation of being set to grab and shoot: the person feeding you the ball has got to give it to you when you are in a position to take that shot. It's the critical coordination of Mike and 'the passer' that makes that sort of thing work and that takes great preparation and teaching by the coaching staff and capable ball handlers to distribute the ball.

Indeed. Teamwork big part of it. Recognizing when shooters are calling for ball and getting it to them in position is crucial.
We definitely can do a much better job with this for Mike and others. Brown especially, you can just look at him already and see how he wants the ball delivered. If you get it to him in rhythm in the right spot, he’s going to shoot a high percentage. This is coached defensively.
