Rice Women at NCAA Cross Country Championships
This Saturday, November 20, the Rice women will be competing with 30 other teams at the NCAA Cross Country Championships in Tallahassee, Florida. The 6K (3.72823 miles) race, at Apalachee Regional Park Cross Country Course, will begin at 9:20 a.m., CST. There will be LIVE coverage on ESPNU, beginning at 9:00 a.m.

LIVE RESULTS

Rice will be lightly regarded, as their only race of note was their runners-up finish at the South Central Regional. I would expect that the "experts" would rank them as 31st coming into the championships. However, two factors are in favor of Rice's finishing ahead of 2-3 teams: (1) they are peaking right now; (2) having Grace finish very high (with very few points) gives them a huge advantage over other teams.

How many of the top 30 teams (or others receiving votes) are competing at the NCAA's (I know there are 31 teams altogether, but that's 37 teams ranked or receiving votes).

RE: Rice Women at NCAA Cross Country Championships
Women's Individual race - I would expect that the defending champion, Mercy Chelangat of Alabama, would be the overwhelming favorite to defend her championship from March's NCAA Championships. Here are the runners who I think will be among the top finishers:

Mercy Chelangat (Alabama)
Whittni Orton (BYU)
Ceili McCabe (West Virginia)
Abby Nichols (Colorado)
Kelsey Chmiel (North Carolina State)
Taylor Roe (Oklahoma State)
Taryn O'Neill (Northern Arizona) *
Joyce Kimeli (Auburn)
Grace Forbes (Rice)
Amanda Vestri (Syracuse)

* O'Neill is the only runner to finish ahead of Grace all year. (She has not raced against the others on this list)

Kentucky is not there. Villanova and Rice are. That makes up the 31 teams.

I hope to be able to contribute. Looking forward to your on-course observations and insights whenever they come.

Is there a limit to the number of runners that a qualified team can enter in this race?

Is there a limit to the number of runners that a qualified team can enter in this race?

7 maximum per team, but only the top 5 score. The other 2 can "displace" top 5 runners from other schools, thus affecting the points. Example:

1. Runner #1 Team A - 1 point
18. Runner #5 Team A - 18 points
19. Runner #4 Team B - 19 points
20. Runner #6 Team A - 20 points
21. Runner #5 Team B - 21 points

So, although Runner #5 Team B was the 20th "counted" runner, he gets 21 points because he finished behind Team A's 6th runner.

Note: a team can start with as few as 5 runners, but must finish with at least 5 to be counted in the team standings. That team just would not be able to "displace" any runners from other teams.

Also, there are 38 unattached runners in the field - they CANNOT displace.

1. Runner #1 Team A - 1 point
18. Runner #5 Team A - 18 points
19. Runner #4 Team B - 19 points
20. Runner #6 Team A - 20 points
21. UNATTACHED RUNNER - [no points]
22. Runner #5 Team B - 21 points

Right now it's 51° with about 10 mph wind. Not a cloud in the sky. Great for runners - a little brisk in the shade for spectators. There is limited access to watch the race because of so many trees.

What are the unattached runners competing for? Individual standings? Olympics/pro scouting?

Grace is shown as one of the Top 8 who could contend for the individual title. "She's having a phenonmenal year."

Why not? You have the team race, but you also have an individual race so all of the unattached runners are obviously hoping for that trophy, or all-American status. It's no different from numerous Olympic events where team titles and medals are given out, but you also have individual medals awarded.

Go Grace!

The Rice graphic on the ESPNU ticker is disappointing. A blue R on a blue background. Hard to pick out.

Grace is 10th (for team standing purposes) after 1170 yards, with the next Rice runner (Wosika) in 200th. Rice is 30th as a team after that 1170 yard plateau.

But really, we're just seeing how Forbes does. The team will probably finish near the back of the teams running, but that's fine.
