Missouri Valley Conference possibly looking at adding 4th team...
in addition to UTA, Kansas City, and Murray State. Those 3 schools are reportedly making presentations to the league next month. According to a rumor on the MVCfans board, a 4th team is being looked at. No indication that the 4th team is LR, and I have no idea if we are even interested. Schools that fans mention include UI-Chicago, Milwaukee, Wright State, and Northern Kentucky. Not saying it won't be a good basketball conference, but the "new" MVC will look nothing like the Missouri Valley Conference I remember. I guess conference membership changes are the new normal. Just makes it really hard to know what would be the best available move for us.

RE: Missouri Valley Conference possibly looking at adding 4th team...
Well, Matt Brown confirms that it won't be the MoValley. Not sure who he is, but he seems to have been "in the loop" based on my internet searches in recent weeks. Seems like UTA will really be on an "island" especially if MoSt leaves as has been rumored. The Valley could add ORU to give them a relatively close rival.
FoUTASportscaster on the Sun Belt site, sure does not appear happy with the proposed move to the MVC (don't know if he is actually to broadcaster for UTA).

Me neither. I think in the end we will not receive an invite to the MVC. I believe we will end up in the southland, which is fine by me. Good geographic fit for us, several familiar schools from our previous stent in the Southland, and I believe we will be competitive in the Southland. It sure would be great if UTA and UALR were invited to the CUSA.

I would be much more excited about the Southland if you guys ended up there. But, it seems to me that UTA to the MoValley is close to a done deal. You benefit by being in a huge, growing metro area and having 44,000 students. We only have 7600 students, less than half are full-time undergraduates, and are in a midsize city. You do seem out of their "footprint", but the league seems okay with branching out. Seems like we are most likely to end up in some new version of the Southland or Ohio Valley. I just want to stay DI and land in a conference that appears stable for, at least, the time being. While our athletic accomplishments are probably a little better than yours, it comes down to the potential you have considering your location and large student base.

It seems to me that the MVC is going to listen to presentations from 3 or 4 schools and invite 1 or 2 of those. I really believe we won't receive an invite because we have no basketball tradition and we are way out of there footprint ( this would make sense only if you guys came too, to bridge the gap). We are in a large market, but most people in that market don't even realize we play basketball. We just don't make sense for the Valley, so come on and join us in the Southland ( there, the decision has been made)

No doubt the Southland would be much more attractive to me if you joined . I just believe you are headed to the MoValley.

Interesting that the MoValley appears to be changing the formula that has worked for them for decades- schools in mostly small markets that love college basketball (okay the recent addition and success with Loyola-Chicago was an exception). UMKC and UTA are in super large markets, but are mostly ignored by the folks that live there. Will this change in strategy work for them? Who knows?

No , it will not. I still feel certain that Murry State and the 4th school will get the invite , not UMKC or us

No, he is not an actual broadcaster. Maybe 10 years ago he was a student broadcaster of some type. He's nice fan.

As for me, I will support whatever conference we are in.

Matt Brown in today’s EP…

I am hearing that if the MVC doesn't work out, the OVC is a more likely destination for UALR than the ASUN, WAC or Southland. One person close to the program told me that while he understands why fans bring up the ASUN, "that still gives us the same problems we had in the Sun Belt, just now with less money."

I'm fine with the Ohio Valley as long as it's clear they will stabilize and be around for a while. I like the idea of them adding Southern Indiana, if they move up from DII. Same with Lincoln Memorial. Both have new arenas that look very much like the Stephens Center. "Stealing" Western Illinois would be positive as well.

I thought Matt Brown confirmed the Mo Valley was not interested in Little Rock. His latest tweet seems to leave the door open.

I think his full column clearly states that MVC is not interested in us. Their reason for being interested in UTA sounds strange to me- the private schools want to get into Texas for recruiting purposes (we are talking about "regular" students not athletes). Would like to know how many students from north Texas headed to ASU, GaSou, AppSt, South Alabama, etc. because those schools were in the conference with UTA. My guess would be you could count them on your hands. Crazy to put that above athletic performance and attendance. We are clearly better than UTA and UMKC in athletic performance and no worse in attendance.

At this point the low mid major conference situation that might be possibilities for us are in a state of extreme volatility. But, assuming we are not asked, and/or can’t afford the MVC or CUSA, here’s how I currently size up the situation for us:

1) Best conference possibility for us is probably the ASun. In spite of the quote that Matt Brown attributes to a LR insider, I don’t think the ASun would bring the same problems as the SBC. Remember that all four Florida schools, in addition to Lipscomb and Bellarmine, do not have football. Add LR into that mix and there would be seven schools without football, vs only 2 of 12 in the SBC. Also, having UCA as a conference travel partner would be a real plus!

2) The OVC, if it adds schools with no football like Western Illinois, Southern Indiana, etc along with LR, UTA, and possibly ORU, would then be a reasonable possibility. If the OVC losses anymore football schools, it might well be out of the football business, and the left over football members could get hooked up with the Mo Valley football league.

3) The Summit is really a bad choice geographically, but it is basketball centric.

4) The Southland to me would be the absolute worst choice given the deal it gave McNeese. It would great if UNO would go ASun or OVC with us if that’s where we landed. I love playing UNO, but not enough to stomach the **** show that the Southland has become. Beware of any conference leadership that would make the deal those guys did!

While I don't disagree, if the alternative was folding as a conference, they may have felt they had no choice. I interpreted the "same problems" comment as being in reference to costly travel expenses rather than football. The ASun, while making it clear that they want to sponsor football, has also expressed a desire to increase their numbers by adding non-football schools. Of course, who really knows? And who is the "insider" that is giving him information, but not providing any to local folks here in Little Rock?

I am confused as to why Little Rock would be against the ASun unless it became clear that UCA was leaving or that the league was really trying to copy the WAC's original "Lets all jump to FBS together" idea. OVC has SEMO, but it feels ultimately that its not a huge benefit to you guys unless Tennessee Tech and Tennessee State stay put.
