Rice women vs TSU
Owl women continue their four game homestand with a matchup tonight vs TSU. TSU is 0-2 and has been destroyed in both games (114-71 at Depaul and 93-38 at Arizona), but I suspect tonight's game will be much closer.

One thing is certain about tonight's game - Ashlee Austin will be on the winning team (but also the losing team). Oddly, both teams start a player with that name (but TSU's Ashley Austin spells her first name with a Y, so I guess technically Ashlee Austin might just be on the losing team - let's hope not).

A broadcaster's nightmare, if both are on the court at the same time. Worth tuning in just to hear how it's handled. :-)

Tipoff is 6pm Central time, btw.

RE: Rice women vs TSU
A 68 team tournament might (?) have helped Rice get in last year. This year, it won't matter to Rice (or CUSA most likely), but an extra few spots could help the Owls in the AAC down the road?

Charlotte was the preseason CUSA favorite on the women's side, and they just got destroyed the other night by UNC (something like 78 to 33, it was ugly). That loss alone might cost them any chance at an at-large, but ODU (over Auburn) and MTSU (over Vanderbilt) both have decent early season NC wins for CUSA.

I don't know what her position is long term, but Fisher can be an all-conference player. Really good combination of athleticism, quickness, and size.

Fisher reminds quite a few of us of Jessica Kuster - not quite the outside shooter Jessica was. But physically, she plays a lot like Kuster. Probably our best freshman prospect in some time.

15-9 Rice after 1 quarter. This is one of the worst TSU women's teams I've seen in some time. The Owls should easily win this game by double figures. I'm surprised Cynthia Cooper has this little talent. Two years ago, TSU beat a pretty decent Rice team at their place.

Women only up by 7 at the half somehow. TSU with all sorts of fouls, but Rice under 50 percent at the FT line? Or maybe we're just above 50 percent - Bellamy missed a FT but it might have been a lane violation (turnover) instead of a miss.

Pretty ugly game all around.

Just above: 7 of 13.

Good defense, and we cut down on the TOs, but we shot just 39% for the half. Crosthwait's shooting is obviously still off as she missed a ton of practice time. Nobody else picking up the slack. Fisher's all-around game is the best we've seen since Erica. She needs to improve her outside shot a bit, and put on a bit more body mass so she doesn't get beat up going for rebounds, but she's a good one for sure.

Should have kept my mouth shut-- turnovers picking up dramatically in 3Q. We have more TOs in the first 5 minutes of the 3Q than we had in the whole 1st half....and shooting just 32%. Austin with 4 fouls already.

TSU outrebounding us this quarter after we held a sizable advantage throughout first half.

Rice 37-29 4:42 of 3Q.

This is really ugly. Fisher is the only thing keeping us in the lead. No one else is playing even decent.

Rice 47-34 at the end of 3Q. Katlyn hit a couple 3 pointers in the final 2 minutes to bring the lead back up after TSU had narrowed it to 7 a couple times.

Fisher: 13 points (6-12 FG), 12 boards, 2 assists, 2 steals, 1 block
Crosthwait: 12 points (4-12 FG)

What are the long times out with the zebras at the bench?

The majority of students leaving after Connor’s shooting contest victory at half time is disappointing.

32 of TSU's 40 points are on layups. Our perimeter D has been outstanding, but....

This officiating crew should not be at a D1 game.

We've scored all of 4 points in the first 6 minutes of the 4Q. Which team can get to 30 turnovers first?

Rice still up 51-41. The only saving grace is that TSU is 0-9 from deep.

Stover 3-pointer (her first bucket of the night!) following an Austin layup makes it 56-43 with 2:22 to go.

And Crosthwait with a 3-pointer might be the nail in the coffin: Rice 59-43 at 1:17.

RE: Rice women vs TSU
Gooden really struggling her first 3 games. Tonight she's 0-5 from the floor, 5 boards, 4 fouls, 3 TOs. Stover and Bokunewicz aren't contributing either.

Rice 59-47 final with Fisher inexplicably sitting the final 4 minutes (when it was still within ear shot).

Fisher: 13 points, 13 boards, 2 assists, 3 steals, 3 blocks
Crosthwait: 17 points (6-17 FG, 3-9 deep), 1 board, 1 assist
Austin: 12 points (4-5 FG), 7 boards, 2 steals

12 assists vs. 23 turnovers is not usually going to cut it. It helps that TSU had 28 TOs.

She was 5/8 (.625) from the field in the first 2 games.

Not your typical coach-speak ("i was proud of the team..."), but instead a refreshingly honest post-game assessment from Edmonds...

Quote:"It was good to get back out there. Last Saturday left a bad taste in my mouth and I haven't slept very much since then. This was a sloppy one tonight. We were able though to respond there in the third quarter. We're a young and inexperienced team and we've got to figure out a way to put together 40 minutes. I did think we learned and grew some from the previous game. I think it's important for our team to experience success and understand that if they execute the game plan we can win basketball games."
