The single biggest issue is at PG. ALO is best at getting the ball across half court, but not an outstanding PG. Earl needs to recover form the surgery (get back in the groove, so to speak) and settle in at point. Bates turns it over too often to advance the ball. If CPH gets this issue solved, we will challenge for a Final 4 berth, and possibly beyond.

Think about it - Nolley, Lester, Duren, Bates, and whomever else can be the facilitator and this team is fantastic. Not to mention Minot or Earl or Chandler or Malcom, or any others. goodness.

Kenpom has a MVP for each game.

Quote:Definition: the best player in each game is chosen using John Hollinger’s Game Score with a three-point bonus for being on the winning team.

So far after the first 3 games, Duren has been MVP in 2 games (NC Central and St. Louis) and Bates in 1 game (Tenn Tech).

I would not argue against Duren's impact at all. But Bates can do so much more than Duren (of course, the ball is in his hands a LOT more). I simply think Bates is the most talented guy on a very talented team.

They complement each other well. Double-team Duren give it to Bates. Double-team Bates throw it in the Duren. And that's not counting all of the other weapons we have.

These 7 are for sure:

Lomax - can be frustrating...but ball moves so much better offensively with him.
Emoni
Nolley
Lester
Williams
Duren
Minott - love this kid. Think he would score 15 a game with 20 plus min. And it would a good efficient 15 points.

Shouldn't play ... but coach is playing:

-Jayden: too many turnovers, stops ball movement, not a playmaker (but thinks he is). He is so frustrating if you really watch. Name one thing he does really well? Shouldn't be playing.

-Dandridge: Just too many mistakes, tries to do things he can't do. If he would just rebound and stick backs...fine...but he isn't content with that. Cannot have unnecessary turnovers from this position.

-Earl: Hate to say it...but on the offensive end say what he does good...shooting? no assists? ... not really... turnovers? yes. Agree his defense is good. But just not seeing this. And no way this dude is an NBA player. Doesn't do any one thing good enough.

Should play more:

Chandler Lawson: I would use Chandler as the backup big man instead of Dandridge. Knows how to play. Doesn't make nearly as many mistakes as Malcolm and knows his role. Use him as backup 4 and 5.

Tyler Harris: I would give Tyler minutes in the first half of each game to see if he is hot. If so...let him play. If not...he stays out.

So those are my 9: Lomax, Emoni, Nolley, Lester, Williams, Duren, Minott, C. Lawson, and Tyler.

You shorten this rotation with the right guys and you will run people out of the building.

I see no universe where Tyler and Chandler bring more than Jayden and Earl.
Tyler will have big games - maybe 1 in 10. So I guess you could make an argument for higher upside.
But Jayden has been MUCH more consistent than the other 3. Too many TO's? He literally has the lowest TO per minute ratio on the team. What does he do well? Make shots, settle the offense, not make mistakes.
And Earl probably has the most upside of the 4.

Tyler can contribute...

There will be nights when Tyler is just off...And if the other team has big guards he will be a liability on defense. So it will be situational.

People forget that Tyler as Freshen put up about the same stats as Boogie last year.

He should get more open looks with this team especially if we play inside out at times.

Now Chandler...He is not made for Pennies defensive system. Penny wants to switch 1-5...Chandler is going to struggle to guard a SF much less a PG.

They do. Or when they double one of those guys, go to Nolley, or Lester, or Minot, or Tyler, or......well, you get the picture. 02-13-banana

RE: A few thoughts after a few games
My Thoughts...

Emoni has been great...If he can maintain this level of play he will be special (Tough ask)

Jayden has been better...Shooting much better but likely still be a liability on defense against tougher opponents.

Nolley has been Nolley

Lester has been Lester

Tyler has been Tyler...Accept he is hot right now...We will see if this is real. Also right now Tyler is the backup PG if the other team even thinks about pressing us.

Duren is more athletic than I thought he would be...Feel he needs more touches in the post (Just like we pass inside to Deandre...Duren should get some touches in the post as well)

Williams starting slow shooting the ball...But he did last year as well...He will be top 2 in importance this year. Need him to be solid.

Dandridge is smart but tries to do too much...Plays defense with his hands and not his feet and still doesn't rebound at a high enough level.

Earl just seems clumsy to me right now...Falling and stumbling when it just doesn't seem like he should. Maybe he is out of shape...But he does seem to have the physical build and athleticism to be very solid...

Minott right now seems to be solid...Very good in the open floor...Better defender then expected. When the talent level of our opponents goes up I would like to see Minott before Jayden

Correct, they complement each other similar to Shaq and Penny. Neither would be as effective without the other. Both make this team great.

On this team Bates is more important on offense...There is no question about that.

Duren looks to be capable offensively but he needs others in order to get his opportunities.

Defensively...Duren is a monster...But not sure that having him can make the defense much better than it was last year. What this team was missing last year was a playmaker...And Bates brings that. I don't think that makes him the most talented...But it definitely makes his skillset the most important.

-Dandridge: Just too many mistakes, tries to do things he can't do. If he would just rebound and stick backs...fine...but he isn't content with that. Cannot have unnecessary turnovers from this position second lowest turnover rate of top 11 players.

-Earl: Hate to say it...but on the offensive end say what he does good...shooting? no assists? tied with Bates for third in assists ... not really... turnovers? yes lower turnover rate than any of the starters. Agree his defense is good. But just not seeing this. And no way this dude is an NBA player. Doesn't do any one thing good enough. Coming off sugery for an injury

Should play more:

Chandler Lawson: I would use Chandler as the backup big man instead of worse player in the top 15.
Dandridge. Knows how to play. Doesn't make nearly as many mistakes Above you say he makes too many mistakes as Malcolm and knows his role. Use him as backup 4 and 5.

Tyler Harris: I would give Tyler minutes in the first half of each game to see if he is hot. If so...let him play. If not...he stays out.

Have you watched any of the games? See above in bold.

Ha Ha. Yall crushing me and that is fine. Yes, I have watched all the games and have for last 30 years.

I would only say this....let's talk stats at the end of the year. Yall giving me stats after 3 games (turnover ratios, shooting percentages, etc). Probably not a real reflection of full season and how this will turnout. And to be fair...I am judging Earl after only a few games as well which probably isn't fair from my standpoint.

Jayden is shooting 60% from 3 right now after 3 games....BUT he shot 17% from 3 last year. I will give you $100 if he shoots 60% for the year :). No doubt I am down on him. Just seems to be better options available that you could give those minutes to. Jayden did have one of the lower TO rates last year...so maybe that comment from me was not so accurate.

Interesting your comments on Chandler Lawson about him being the worst of our 15 players. He played 18-19 min a game for Oregon on two good teams.

I think you read my Malcolm/Lawson comment wrong. Malcolm has highest turnover rate on the team. Per 40 minutes this year Malcolm would have 7 turnovers which is highest on the team. Last year Malcolm was 4th on the team in TO rate. I am saying Chandler could fill those minutes with less turnovers likely.

I am just for shortening the rotation to our best 8-9. We have had the luxury of big leads and you can play lots of guys. Against good teams that probably not the best strategy.

RE: A few thoughts after a few games
I am pretty much content with our offensive weapons. The encouraging part to me is that we have a lot of new players who are going to become better on the defensive end of their game. That is where some real progress can be made. From last nights game, here are the results. Both teams entered the game shooting 55% from the field and better than 41% from 3-point range. But against the Tigers, Saint Louis was limited to 31% shooting, including making only five of its 22 3-pointers.
Memphis turned up the defensive pressure, leading to 10 Billiken turnovers and 26% shooting in the first half. Saint Louis missed five of its six 3-pointers.
More to come.

Duren is a defensive Monster - absolutely. KenPom currently has the Tigers as the 3rd best defense in the country, and I would venture to say that is too low 03-wink

And I agree Bates is the most important, for the reasons you note. And I think we are all splitting hairs to call one more talented than the other. 04-cheers

Went to the St. Louis board after the game and several posts are saying we look like a Final 4 team. We still have a lot of work in front of us but...they really didn't expect to see what they saw last night.
