Isn't that where the term JMU (Just Missed Uva) came from? Douchy Waahoos?

I've heard that dig come from people from VT and other schools as well. Seems to be a state-wide insult toward us. In fact I've probably heard it more from non-UVA people than the fish.

Honestly I think George Mason is who I've heard that from the most. I remember one year a lot of them had shirts and their cheerleaders were handing out buttons with Just Missed UVA. But yeah, overall is definitely a statewide thing and I'm not sure I've ever heard it from UVA themselves.

Makes it even weirder then, when they're bragging on somebody else's school.

Especially Mason students who couldn't get into JMU, let alone UVA.

I have heard it many times and doesn't even remotely bother me. Going to JMU was one of the best decisions I ever made in my life. If it bothered me, it would mean that part of me wanted to go to UVA and that was never the case.
I visited the UVA campus and the tour guide completely turned me off of UVA. I could have gotten in if I applied, but I wanted to go to JMU. I loved JMU for all the reasons most of us love JMU.
I did like the shirts students were wearing at the time "JMU: THE University of Virginia"
As for VT, it's like comparing apples to apple shaped magnets: they have similar shapes, but complete different purposes.

Mason has a weird dynamic for academics. It is a good school overall, but it isn't particularly selective. They do get some very bright students from all over who want to go to school in the DC area though. Maybe it's because I'm from the area, but I can't imagine a worse fate than spending my four college undergraduate years in Fairfax.

I kind of liked Blacksburg as a town but wasn't in love with Tech during my visit. The only appeal about Tech for me was the football team. I'm not sure I would have even visited if not for that.

When I graduated from high school Mason seemed/felt like a community college.

Working in Blacksburg, I have been through campus many times. The campus has some areas that are "nice", but I wouldn't call it a beautiful campus. Plus the stone has a very cold look IMO.
I went to school with a few people that told me the football team was THE reason they chose Tech.
Honestly, I have no right to judge as the MRDs were the first reason I considered JMU.

Took my kid for a visit to GM and it was absolute ghost town so we insisted on giving it a second chance because something had to be causing that. Went back on another weekday near lunchtime, went through the student center area and most of the businesses weren’t even open yet and again it was a ghost town, with no signs of college kids anywhere. Going to a place like that would be totally missing out on the college experience you could get at JMU.

One of my sons graduated from Virginia Tech. His overall experience was very positive, and to whoever knocked their academics, you may want to brush up on their engineering school.

Maybe I was just always in the right place at the right time, but I honestly can't remember a bad outing there. Both the school and the town have a down-to-earth vibe, and (to the credit of the business owners) Main Street feels like an extension of campus.

Football at Lane is fantastic. I only attended a few games but found the fans knowledgeable and friendly.

All that said, I of course hope we beat them by 50.

The worst part of attending George Mason is the prospect of four years of living in your mom's basement.

I think you may have been referring to my quote, and I just wanted to clarify.
VT has completely different focuses than JMU. They are both universities, but isn't right to compare the two in terms of who goes there as they are completely different.
I have to agree that their engineering school is top-notch.
