I don't think the fans have delusional expectations. They want 9 and 10 win seasons, Coastal titles and a good bowl. Tech has never been elite, but they have been very, very good at times in the last 20 years. In '99, Vick had them leading FSU in the third quarter in the national championship game. The best years under Beamer, on average, they won about 10 or 11 games and were ranked top 15. You go two dozen other schools in the country, and it's national championship or bust. Not at Tech.

Part of the problem is that Tech has really only had success under one, very long-tenured coach. They won some under Bill Dooley, but Frank was the guy that set the bar. (And Bud.) They've only had three head coaches in 43 years. So it's not a program that's used to replacing coaches, and it's not a fan base who's used to dealing with that. And being only the third head coach since the '70s puts a lot of pressure on a guy like Fuente. I think he tried but he just wasn't cut out for it.

EDIT: Also, Shane Beamer is not coming back. Babcock would never do that. I suspect they'll get another up-and-comer. Look at their basketball hires--Kenny and what, the guy from Wofford?

They do support their basketball team, but football is #1 for them no question.
I don't believe their donors will be happy with an up and coming guy. They want a name and I'm sure the donors will do what it takes to get that guy.
I just feel like they are going to go after a name far more than the best coach.
I wonder if Stinespring will apply.
I honestly am not worried that VT would steal Cignetti because they view us as inferior and I doubt the donors would give him a chance. Honestly, CC would be a good hire for them, but I just don't see them taking a coach from little 'ole Div II JMU.

I don't think Cignetti would be enough of a splash hire for the Tech fanbase. Kenny had an edge with Whit because they knew each other while at JMU and Kenny had the premier WBB job in the state of Virginia at the time Whit hired him to take over the Hokie program.

I worry for our sake as we move up to FBS that Cignetti might be more Mickey 2.0 than Houston 2.0 but time will tell. He definitely has more of a coaching pedigree than Houston had.

Agree with all of that.
Was talking to some co-workers that are Tech fans. Take this for what it's worth, but they are hearing a few names:
-Clemson's OC
-Louisiana HC
-Liberty HC
-CC HC
I believe he said another OC, but cannot recall who.
He also agrees with thoughts on Cignetti. Would be a good coach for them, but no way the donors would be satisfied with that choice.
IMO Louisiana's HC would be my first choice.

No way they hire Freeze (Liberty HC) as he is still toxic.
Think Napier will go to a higher profile school.
Chadwell is a good possibility and I think he is a good coach as he won at ChaSo.
Last team to take Clemson OC wad USF and that hasn't worked too well.

I think the CC HC is someone I would really look hard at. I even think personality wise he would be a good fit. I think Tech Fans are realistic. A great or very good coach could get them into the top 15 consistently.

Of course CCU has been pretty close to top 15 the last two years. 03-lmfao

RE: VT HC Fuente out, JC Price named interim
Tech is at a crossroads here. Do they open up the checkbook to bring in a big name coach that has a good chance of either failing or bringing scandal? Or do they see the writing on the wall that their run of being a perennial Top 15 team is likely over and settle for good enough and become like NC State (competitive most years but never really in the national conversation)?

As previous posters have mentioned, there will soon be five FBS teams in state and UVA certainly seems poised to continue to be solid with Mendenhall at the helm.

So much of this depends on if LSU is able to lure in Dabo or Jimbo though. Gonna be a lot of dominoes that fall from there so Tech is going to have to be adept at climbing the chaos ladder.

The Chokie run is over. They rode Vick's coat tails for about 15 years. That ride has now officially ended.

Meh. They were 10-2 and won the Sugar Bowl when Mike Vick was a freshman in high school.

Agreed. I'm not one to defend VPISue but they made like 5 BCS bowl games post-Vick . Beamer was an excellent coach that gets dogged on solely for never winning the national championship. Tech was pretty meh before him and I anticipate them being pretty meh for quite some time after.

I think they should hire Jamey Chadwell from Coastal. He's a young coach (44), plays an exciting brand of football, and has been extremely successful. He's done a lot with fewer resources at CCU; imagine what he could do with more resources at VT.

I don't get the VT hate - and I think it almost always makes us look like little brothers when we try to make them look smaller.

Sure I love to point out we beat them and they won't play us, but you gotta respect their program. They're further along the line to what we aspire to be than we are (although I think we have aspirations beyond what they currently are) and at least they're not pretentious a**holes like those people in Cville. We used to go down to bburg and party at gamedays when JMU was away and had a great time.

Also, every fanbase is delusional - that's part of being a fan.

There was a stretch there where VT fans were very high on their own supply, but I agree with others who say they've been humbled the last several years and most of the fans I talk to have an accurate assessment of their team and history and pros and cons as a program. Frankly for a while now the most stuck up football fanbase in the commonwealth has probably been JMU.

I stand by my assessment of the demise of VT football. I've had to listen to them and their talking down at JMU for 20+ years. I'm enjoying every second of this. I don't feel like finding the GIF, but for anyone who watches Chappelle... hate hate hate hate hate.

Tech is a safety school that thinks they're a titan of industry when reality is they are just Mason in the middle of nowhere. The bad thing is they have a very tight alumni community so those sh*theads continue to get jobs in the DMV. They're in competition with JMU post degree moreso than as a school, so any failure by VT (whether it is just a pride thing so they don't thump their chest so much or a real downgrade in standing) is good for the JMU Nation.

I've always hated VT waaaaaaaayyyyy more than UVA. VT gets all the rednecks in the state cheering for them and they're full of themselves for absolutely no reason. Sure UVA is cocky too, but at least they actually have reason to be. Nobody tries to put down JMU as little brothers that don't matter and don't play real D1 more than VT does.

Lol. Well, Tech was my safety school, but only because I went to Blacksburg High and wanted to GTFO. But it's actually considered to be on the of the better schools in the country--as is George Mason. Both schools admit their share of knuckleheads and commuters, because big state schools have to do that, but in terms of their top end, they bring in a lot of research dollars (about $200 million annually), as does VT (about a half-billion annually).
