Rice calls a 30 second timeout. Some poor transitional defense leads to a couple easy Southern baskets. But Rice still up by 8. 22-14 with 9:21 to go.

Still too many turnovers to start this one. UH with a strong start against UVA across town though. I don’t think last week’s loss will hurt us looking back at the end of the season.

Rice still up 10 at the 3rd break. A few too many turnovers. Pierre having his best game so far maybe.

This has been awful effort from Fiedler. Just no effort sealing off his man on like 50% of entry passes.

26-16 Rice at the U8. I think if you combined Southern's ability to attack off the dribble with our motion and ability to shoot, you'd have a really good offense.

Now we've gone ice cold from the outside. I jinxed them. Rice still up 8 at the final media break of the half. Southern in some foul trouble with their big guys (or bigger guys - not necessarily big guys).

27-19 Rice at the U4. Awful, awful offensive basketball. Defense has been pretty good, save for a few drives where our guys have been blown by.

29-21 at the half. That last elw post sums it up. We did force back-to-back shot clock violations.

Evee didn't play after the 1st 5 minutes. I wonder why? I'm not at the game tonight.

Before we had major athletic complaints-relatively speaking-talking 2013-14 time frame when football was decent and baseball still good, people would often poke fun at the various gaffes JP Heath would make on air... Well, he just had a pretty funny one... He confused August Pitre for Carl Pierre. About a minute before, he butchered the pronunciation of Pitre's hometown (Opelousas, LA), so maybe he was on JP's mind.

If I do recall, Pitre's HS basketball highlights were pretty good.

What an awful final 5 minutes of the half. Rice up 29-21, but we couldn't hit anything those final minutes. And 12 turnovers is not going to cut it. Having said that, an 8 point lead with Olivari out and Evee sitting all but the first 5 minutes due to foul trouble.

Good to see Mullins back in.

Evee got two quick fouls in the first five minutes.

Pera probably wants him to be able to go the distance in 2H.

29-21 Rice at the half. Score doesn't really matter, though, since what's more important is how we look. Thought we were good on defense
(which is a real positive!) but were completely lost on offense. And it's largely down to the fact that we've successfully attacked the paint maybe five times (Lieppert has had two good cuts, Mullins a couple good drives, and Pierre a wide open dunk). There is not one guy on this roster who, right now, can blow by his defender. And that's a serious problem for when we play better teams (as we saw against Houston). I know it sounds like I'm overreacting, but every half like this makes me increasingly worried about what the ceiling is for Pera's system.

Better start to the 2nd half. Good drive by Evee and then good job by Fiedler using his body in transition. 33-21 Rice.

quick 4-0 Rice start causes Southern to use an early 2nd half timeout.

We have had trouble putting together two halves of good basketball, but at least against St. Edward's and Pepperdine, we had one very good half (and one so-so one). Against UH, two bad halves. But perhaps we'll have a good 2nd half tonight.

Better 2nd half so far. 43-27 at the 15:16 mark. We do look much better on offense with Evee in there. Wonder how we would look with a healthy Evee, Olivari and Mullins?

Transition defense has been iffy but half court defense has been money. That's welcome.

The bottom floor concession stand (behind the west stands) has always been open to every game I've been to. The lines can be a bit long for some of the more well-attended games. Tonight shouldn't be a problem is my guess.

Yes, the 2nd floor concession stands aren't always open, but that's the only accurate thing you can say about closed stands.

Aren't always open = almost never open and if it was open, your choices consisted of soft drinks, water and stale popcorn, maybe. And I never cared to miss almost an entire half to walk to the other side of the building and stand in line because the concessions were under staffed in true Rice fashion.

What does the University have against those of us sitting on the west side of Tudor. Surely a task force should be established.

The west side has the upper concessions stand for most weekend games I’ve attended.

I haven’t purchased beer in the stadium this year so Covid rules might have changed things, but previous years you could buy and take it anywhere.
[/quote

As a long time west side season ticket holder dating back to the days when there were no doors on the stalls in Autry, over the last few years the games when the upper west side concessions stand was open are an order of magnitude fewer than the times it was open. .

Owls outscoring Southern 26-10 in the first 7:34 of the 2nd half. Much, much better offensive effort. 55-31 score in the game.

55-31 Rice. Southern's defense has been a complete mess this half. Love that Evee is playing downhill. This has been a much, much better offensive half.

Now Rice uses a timeout after a 5-0 Southern run.

Lieppert with quite a few turnovers tonight (actually just one - seems like more).
