Buffalo participated in the 2019 tournament and Ball State in the 2018. But no MAC participants this year.

I'm at the Marquette vs Ole Miss game. Surprisingly a good amount of Marquette fans here. Maybe 300 or so. Cool little arena.

I went to the Charleston Classic in 2017. Saw Ohio some back from 18 down against Indiana State to send it to OT then make up a 7 point deficit in the last 40 seconds of OT#2 and finally win in 4 OTs. That was an entertaining game haha. Used the day off between the second and 3rd games to go check out the battleship and fort sumpter. Good trip.

As for tonight. I watched The EMU/NKU game. Very entertaining last few minutes and hey… no slow down 2-3 zone. Farrhkahn looks to be a good one. Akron took care of business against Wheelng Jesuit too.

NIU leading Mizzu with 16 minutes left…

I'm not sure which Bronco sport is more embarrassing right now.

NKU was picked 3rd in the Horizon pre-season poll behind CSU and Wright St., but who’s counting? Same difference. Evenly matched game.

NIU lost 54-37 to Missouri. Close at halftime but Missouri pulled away.

Ball State falls to FIU 73-60. A pretty bad night for the MAC overall

Definitely basketball. Football didn't lose to something called Saginaw Valley.

Ball State is bad and Whitford is in his 9th and hopefully final year. I am not going to another game until he is out. I suspect assistant coach, Linc Darner, (Wisc-Green Bay) is waiting in the wings.

Miami would've fared better under Whitford (who was essentially hired by us but pulled out after bad communication from our AD) than John Cooper, but yeah he hasn't done enough in Muncie to justify some leeway if they have a bad season.

Whitford contract was set to expire after this season, but he just signed a 2 year extension this past July. I can't imagine they would fire after just extending him.

Conferences don't get bids, schools do. It's certainly easier for a meh power conference team to get an at-large bid, but it's far from impossible for mid-majors to make it. The bottom teams in the WCC are usually worse than our bottom teams, but programs like Gonzaga have built themselves up to not depend on an auto-bid. UB was in that position a few years ago (but won in Cleveland IIRC, we would've probably gotten two if not).

Of course we're working up against the fact that we have to support FBS football programs and two DI hockey programs. It's not some grand conspiracy, our top three teams just don't win enough against good opponents.

To be able to consistently win against the P5 a mid major has to be built like a P5.

Buffalo was able to do that a few years ago with a 30 win season. However traditionally the MAC has struggled to develop programs. Akron, Buffalo and Ohio have shown progress on that front over the last decade or so.

Kentucky is pulling away.

MAC basketball is pretty bad this year. We picked up losses to Weber State and Norfolk State...

MAC rep as a 'guard league' is futile in these power conference games where MAC teams get curb-stomped on the boards. Got to have some bigs, and even then ...

Ohio has good MAC bigs (BVDP, Carter) but no match for Kentucky. Skilled enough to make it a 30-minute game, but that's about it. Same happened in Kent-Xavier. Flashes lead entire first 30 minutes, but can't hang on the boards and wilt the final 10 minutes for double-digit loss.

Until MAC teams start investing/recruiting/signing multiple post guys with some gonads, more often than not they will wither the final 10 minutes and go home with the 'L'.

Two best MAC teams from the last 20 years (Buffalo, Kent State) with strong NCAA Tournament runs were loaded with big guys, even as guards were the headliners. This is not rocket science.

My comment wasn't in regards to Ohio losing to Kentucky. There is no shame in that.

Home court is a huge factor in college hoops. Good teams don't lose very often at home. Ohio might have won that game in the Convo. They did seem to lose their legs as the game went on.

RE: Men's Basketball Games Week 2 (11/15 Thru 11/21)
MAC starting to sort itself out over this week and next. We'll get a good idea of Akron, Kent and Toledo as they run through 3 game neutral court mid major tourneys. BG and WMU obviously a hot mess, even though both looked better on paper coming in. EMU looking improved but still 1-3. Ball St down a bit. CMU a little improved with some potential to grow. Miami, Ohio and Buffalo look good. NIU has mostly played P5 road games, 1-2. and deserves a couple more mid major contests before evaluation.

MAC has had its worst stretch of the early season over the past few days. Need a good next week to get back to how we looked as a whole in the first week of the season.

Some mid major notes. Loyola Chi announced they are leaving the Valley for the A10. They're 4-0. Chattanooga 4-0 with a win toady at VCU. Dayton struggling to a 1-3 start. Colgate wins at Syracuse today. Drake beats Richmond by 3 in a big game for high level mid majors with tourney expectations. A10 off to a rough start.

Keith Dambrot's Duquense is off to bad start but has a shot at a win vs Colorado today on a neutral court. Just saw it go to OT when Colorado down 3 drives the lane in the final seconds and 3 Duquense players collapse on the driver and leave wide open a 3 point shooter who catches the driver's pass for an easy tying 3. This is after a TO so poor coaching to not give up the 2 with a 3 point lead and 3 seconds to play.
