Rice: Directors Cup 2021-22
As “defending ‘champs’ (or top placers) in CUSA for the NCAA Directors Cup, let’s track our 2021-22 team points.

Especially since we clinched our first points this morning!!

Directors Cup updates their official standings 3 times per school year, at the completion of the Fall sports seasons, the winter sports seasons, and the final standings after the spring sports are in.

We can keep track here “unofficially” in between the official updates, relative to our CUSA compadres, as well as teams in our next conference, the AAC… will also be able to track compared to last years results.

I have every reason to believe that Rice will be competitive straight away in non-revenue sports from day one in AAC, even if the anticipated improvements in MBB, MFB, and MBaseB don’t pan out like we all hope.
That means we should be in the mix for top dog in AAC directors cup, right there with the likes of USF starting in 2023.

But enough about the future, let’s look at NOW!!

Womens CC with their auto berth in to the National Championships have guaranteed 31st place or better, by my calculations that’s good for at least 43 points!

The Men CC placed 5th at regionals, and if they don’t earn an at-large to nationals, then we are looking at around 32 points for them (a couple less if one of the other 5th place regional teams earns an at-large nationals berth).

Sadly, no points for women’s soccer this year, injuries really kept us from repeating any thing near last seasons sweet sixteen run.

And, we are still looking (expecting) points from WVB who won the regular season conference title and are in a good position for an auto bid or at large bid to extend their 3-year NCAA bid streak.

And with our top 15 APR rating, MFB just needs two wins to qualify for an APR-assisted bowl berth (or finish 3-0 to lock up a bowl berth)

With points still on the table to earn for three of our five* fall sports, we atoll have a chance to exceed last year’s fall total in spite of the disappointment of soccer this season.

Yay! Thanks for starting this thread. It will be fun to watch the points pile up ...(hopefully).

What's the point structure like for Football? Are Director's Cup points given for appearances in bowls? Or just for high in-conference finishes?

For FBS, points are awarded based first on the final Coaches' Poll and then on bowl results. 26th place is considered a tie between all unranked teams that won a bowl. Teams that lost a bowl are also awarded points at a tie ranking, but the specific rank depends on how many schools qualified as 26th. The last normal football season, 2019, had the unranked FBS bowl losers at 51st place for 25 points. Probably safe to assume it'll be somewhere around there.

FCS is treated the same as any other elimination tournament team sport, so D-I football has two championships worth the same number of points. I'm not sure exactly which scoring template they use because it's the only 24-team bracket.

Here's a link to the official scoring template.

More points this week as our Volleyball team made the NCAAs (worth 25) and win the first round game to make the top 32 teams (worth another 25!)

I know we really wanted one more win at UT, but great season and our biggest haul (so far) this school year

Volleyball 50
Women’s CC ~43
Men’s CC ~32

Um, gimme a moment. Still running those numbers.
Will need a few more decimals of precision than my iPhone can handle to detect that trace amount of points…

Doing some quick math, we're lucky if it's not -125.

To me, winning a Directors cup with zero points from the Big Three is like winning an Oscar for best sound editing in a foreign language short film.

Owls lead Directors Cup!

Oregon Tech Owls, that is.

They sit on top the fall NAIA Directors Cup standings.

Division I Fall Standings will be published next week (Jan 13) after the CFP.

Last “fall” we stood t-50th with 89 points on the strength of Soccer and Volleyball. (Fall is in quotes due to when soccer and volleyball actually got rescheduled, but they still put together a fall-sports standings for last year that we can compare.

We should be closer to the 125 points range this year when the fall standings come out on Thursday.

Rice: Directors Cup 2021-22
Fall Directors Cup standings are out for NCAA Divison 1. Rice again leads the way and (just like last year) continues to rank second amongst the 18 current and future AAC schools.

In last year’s final standings, we only trailed USF. In this fall’s standings, we trail only Tulsa, whose Men’s Cross Country team placed 3rd nationally.

Directors Cup assigns points based on postseason play in all sports. All sports are weighted (more or less) equally.

Current and future AAC teams:

26 Tulsa (182.5)
* Mens Cross Country 3rd
* Mens Soccer T9th (Sweet 16)
* Football Bowl Win
54 Rice (122)
* Volleyball NCAA T17th (Rnd32)
* Womens Cross Country 31st
* Mens Cross Country T32nd Rgl
71 UCF (95)
* Volleyball NCAA T17th (Rnd32)
* Football Bowl Win
79 Cincinnati (90)
* Football 4th
99 Houston (57)
* Football 17th
102 Memphis (55)
* Womens Soccer T17th (Rnd32)
* Football Bowl Berth (Covid)
102 SMU (55)
* Womens Soccer T17th (Rnd32)
* Football Bowl Berth (Covid)
106 Charlotte (54)
* Mens Cross Country T32nd Rgl
* Mens Soccer T33rd (NCAA)
141 UAB (45)
* Football Bowl Win
158 USF (25)
* Womens Soccer T17th (Rnd32)
158 UNT (25)
* Football Bowl Loss
158 UTSA (25)
* Football Bowl Loss
202 ECU (5)
* Football Bowl Berth (Covid)

Navy, Wichita, Tulane, Temple, FAU

Other CUSA not AAC bound:
71 WKU 95
83 Marshall 75
118 FIU 50
118 ODU 50
141 MTSU 45
158 UTEP 25
Not ranked: LaTech,USM

I won’t spoil it but there’s at least one mistake in the published standings. Correcting it might improve Rice’s placement by one position, depending on how the error is fixed

Also, they seem to have applied a new Covid rule, and it affects this fall’s Covid cancellations differently from how it impacted our volleyball team last year.

Even though we could not play our opening round match last season, we still got “credit” for making the tournament, just the same as any other team that did not advance past round 1. In that case it was 25 points for “Tie-33rd”.

This year for bowl games, teams qualifying for (but not playing) bowl games only received 5 points (not 25 points that unranked bowl game losers get, and not the 45 points that unranked bowl game winners got).

I’m ok with this for the team that had to withdraw from the bowl. But they also penalized the other team in any cancelled bowl matchup.

This seems pretty harsh. I think the team that got cancelled on should at least get 35 points (split the difference) and possibly a full 45 points for a bowl win.

Also the TX Aggies were lucky to be ranked 25th… so they didn’t have to pay a penalty for missing their bowl due to Covid-related issues like a half dozen other teams did.

88 SMU 208.5
96 Memphis 192.0

291 ECU 13.5*

*ECU and UConn will both receive 64 points for making the baseball super regionals, will move UConn in to the top 100 and ECU into the top 200.

Texas clinched their second straight title overall, they lead Stanford by 97 points. With both teams in Omaha, the maximum points Stanford could make up would be just +27.

Great news: we’re by far the “best add” among the six joining the AAC!

Good news: Womens T&F performance at Nationals (30th) helped us hold our ground for the spring.

Bad news: we slipped a bit from last year. And MTSU passed us in CUSA with a ton of Mens Tennis points.

97 MTSU 189.5
101 +Rice 179.5
114 FIU 140.5
127 WKU 130.0

149 +Charlotte 103.5

247 USM 43.0*

*baseball points not yet included. USM will get 64 for making Super Regional Round.
