I had several observations about the game, venue and coaching, as well as the officiating. First off, I really like how UH updated their old arena. It was well designed, well-lit (the old place was a dungeon) and is the right size for the program. The crowd was late to the show but settled in with close to 2/3 capacity. The crowd was also “red” and energetic, so the atmosphere was strong. (It should have been sold out). The officials let the teams play so there were few ticky-tack fouls, which played into UH’s game plans. They were bigger, stronger and extremely well coached/disciplined. UH has a ton of talent and their defense contested all of the Owls perimeter game play as well as made life miserable when the team drove to the basket or went down low with he ball. Pera went at least 5 minutes with both Poteat and Fielder on the court at the same time, but Max does not have an outside shot that UH was concerned about so they immediately doubled down on Poteat every time he touched the ball. Quite frankly, Pera’s decision to give Abercrombie substantial minutes in the 2nd half due to his ability to shoot outside was one of the best adjustments the team made in the final 20 minutes. Virtually all the turnovers on the Owls were forced by good UH defensive play (really active hands in the passing lanes). When Rice began to drive to the bucket or hot the low post to try to get the UH bigs in foul trouble, Sampson astutely instructed his team to work the ball inside to do the same to Fiedler, who was leading the team with 7 boards and had just scored inside with a nice move at the bucket. Two quick fouls on Max at that point limited his effectiveness and Pera pulled him for the rest of the game. Even when UH was slowing down their tempo to run off clock during the last 10 minutes of the game the Coogs were still exceptionally disciplined and were able to finish off those possessions with good shots. It was a clinic on how to win basketball games.
The Owls were never in this game. It was a good measuring stick to see how far the team needs to improve to be competitive in the AAC. They have a long way to go. None of the Owls starting 5 would start for the Cougars. However, there were some (limited) bright spots for the Owls. I thought Sheffield showed some real energy and competitiveness against a superior opponent. Max played hard and performed well both on offense (as a passer) and defense, but struggled with the size and strength of the Cougars interior game. We got to see two different iterations of playing 2 bigs during the game (Fiedler/Poteat, Poteat/Abercrombie).
The remaining Rice guards limitations were exposed. The relative lack of size and strength was substantial. When the offense clicked and players got open, the shots were not falling. That was a recipe for disaster.
Still, I had a good time at the game and am optimistic about the season. I believe this team will win a lot of games in CUSA and will continue to improve.
Good observations. Thanks for the post. I was one of the ones hoping for a Fiedler/Poteat combination but yes, Fiedler's inability to shoot from the outside would create that scenario that you suggest. Of course, most of Rice's opponents (outside of Texas and maybe 1 or 2 CUSA foes) wouldn't have the size that UH does, so maybe it would work against smaller teams.
Poteat didn't have a FGA in 14 minutes. That's not good.
I think Geron will get more and more PT as we go forward. He has a Drew Peterson type game. Nowhere there yet, but give him time.
Agree good post

The Houston media fore a while really does not pay that much attention to either Rice or UH. A lot of it is wasted on the Texans which are a disaster zone.

It's not just a game when it's UH. Perhaps being in New Orleans has isolated you from having to deal with those people, as well as with the sports media here in Houston. If this were Kansas or Florida or Wake Forest, I would tend to agree with your sentiment. But if there's one game that our coaches and players (in any sport) should be ready to play, it's one against them. No one was prepared in either football or men's basketball, and that is unacceptable. Period.
We've been humilliated twicein the past two months by U of H in both football and basketball. This creates more negative press, and general disresepct and derision by the UH-promoting local press (many of which are UH alums) andfrom there it emanates to the general public in this six million metro area-- what little buzz there is among them. These are the worst losses possible insofar as the Rice brand is concerned. And the most disgust-provoking among those of us who've been Institute die-hards for over half a century.

WKU 45, Rice 17 and the game doesn't feel competitive at the half. I'll be happy if I'm wrong though!

These are valid points, but don’t merit some of the “sky is falling” feel of various comments in the thread. The sky isn’t falling, but it was a terrible performance in an important game.

As far as I can tell, the Rice athletics program is stuck in 1973. With all the annual awards for best overal program we have received while in CUSA, I’d have thought we would have much better records in the key sports, or at least have become routinely competitive. Nothing at all has changed in that regard. If anything, we have degraded from our SWC era.

UVA did lose to Navy at home. That's right - to a Navy team that rarely has somone over 6'6" or so (due to Academy limitations on incoming freshmen).
Probably not as harsh as you were in the moment, but maybe some truth in there.
I just wonder what it means about the Hofstra team they had to fight hard against.

I suspect Hofstra had a lot to do with their long tradition of cooging it. But were able to escape...

Houston just lost both Tramon Mark (10.1 ppg, 2.4 apg) and Marcus Sasser (17.7 ppg) to season ending injuries. Awful luck for a team that very easily could've competed for a championship in a year where there are no clearly dominant teams.

And now Houston has 'lost' its AAC opener against Cincy due to Covid protocol. For now, it's considered a UH forfeit and a win for Cincinnati (although I could see most conferences changing their rules on Covid forfeits). They also play at Temple next Sunday.
