Rice MBB at Houston (Nov. 12)
Assuming Mullins can't go, my starting 5 is probably: Fiedler-Sheffield-Pierre-Olivari-Evee.

I'd guess that Fiedler is going to struggle all night with the physicality of Houston's bigs. Starting Sheffield gives you another biggish body to alleviate some of the rebounding pressure that's going to be on Fiedler's shoulders. I do wonder if Pera will run out Fiedler and Poteat at the same time during stretches, especially if Houston dominates us early on the glass. The biggest issue with them both on the floor is obviously spacing. Fiedler would have to operate on the high post, but unless he's consistently make 10-15 foot jumpers, I'd imagine Sampson would be willing to let him try to beat them.

Have to imagine that Houston is going to come out much, much better than they looked against Hofstra. You know Sampson was pissed and him being pissed scares me more than basically every other CBB coach being pissed. They're going to try to set the tone early by bullying us, which means we're going to need 1-4 to be aggressive as hell rebounding. Houston might also be getting Tramon Mark back, a prototypical Sampson guard who had some really good games down the stretch for them last year. He didn't play against Hofstra but I'm not sure what his timetable is.

Hopefully the refs give us a chance. That's the X factor in my book.

Two years ago at our place, we led them by 7 at the half and then Trey Murphy got hurt in the 2nd half. He continued to play on a bad leg but it wasn't the same. Grimes went off too for Houston with 21 2nd half points so that was obviously a key too.

I think this Rice team is better than that Murphy/Peterson (as sophomores) team. Whether this Houston team is as good remains to be seen. They think they're better, but that was a pretty stout UH team too (Elite Eight maybe?).

eta -- "Assuming Mullins can't go, my starting 5 is probably: Fiedler-Sheffield-Pierre-Olivari-Evee." That's who we started in the 2nd half against Pepperdine, and that group started us off on one of the best 20 minutes stretches I've seen in a long time for Rice basketball. Even if Mullins is healthy, I'd go with that five against bigger teams (Houston, Texas, maybe someone like UAB, WKU and La Tech in conference play). Most of the other teams we can go with Mullins over Sheffield.

Houston lost in the South Regional Sweet Sixteen to Kentucky, 62-58.

These two things

My experience is that teams that are often 'bullies' get away with a lot, and teams that are not get called for a lot of ticky-tack stuff... Sometimes just because the bullies are so used to doing it that it 'feels' natural... while the 'finesse' team looks out of place so it 'feels' like a foul.

Kelvin Sampson with some nice words on Rice.

We will have to do a good job defending their system. I think their hash tag is green-light U. It fits. Scott's a really good offensive coach. Takes nothing away from anything else.

You can tell their offense, there's a clear purpose in what they're trying to do...I have a lot of respect for Scott and Rice. People just don't know how good teams like that are. He reminds me of some of the teams I had in my early days at Oklahoma. We were good, but nobody knew about it until later. Rice is going to have a really good team and people won't realize it until it's too late. This is a team Rice fans should get behind right now. They're good. They've got outstanding guards. They're a matchup problem. Good players, good system, really good coach. I think it's going to be a great game Friday night.

The line is Houston -14.

O/U of 141.5 (seems low to me).

That line is tighter than the KenPom split even before factoring in home court. I think the Vegas line is much closer than KenPom in this instance.

I’ll take the Owls and the points.

(We probably won’t need them though and will win straight up. )
71-70 Rice just to sneak under the O/U 03-wink

AP preview article I just read makes it sound like Olivari’s availability is still in doubt with his wrist.

I highly doubt you'd be able to keep Olivari out of the game if you wanted to. Mullins is obviously different, because hands are different than wrists.

The Roost just said on Twitter that Mullins and Olivari are still TBD. Obviously both would be big losses, even if we beat Pepperdine without Mullins.

I think we can still win without Mullins. Pierre and Mcbride replace his production pretty well.

Olivari needs to play for us to have a chance.

I don't necessarily agree about Mullins. Remember, he's easily our best defensive guard. A Kelvin Sampson team is going to present very different challenges than a shorthanded, inexperienced Pepperdine team. Mullins would almost certainly be the guy tasked with guarding Marcus Sasser, who scored 25 against Hofstra and 20 in each of their Elite 8 and Final Four games as a freshman.

This is going to be a fun game! I expect to see all Houston-based "Parliamenteers" to show up on Cullen Boulevard cheering on the Owls. No excuses. Tickets are available and the UH arena is quite a nice venue now. There is even proximate parking. Don't be cheapskates! Time for this board to walk the talk and be present! No whining about ticket prices or having to pay for parking or worrying about the "3rd Ward" The METRO rail will let you off next to the stadium if you are concerned about paying for parking. The team needs your support and we want to make this rivalry something special again!

I used to go to games at UH, but no more-can't deal with their way obnoxious fans.....

Interesting. J'Wan Roberts questionable for Houston. He grabbed 15 rebounds for them off the bench against Hofstra and I think the Houston forum really liked his minutes. Wouldn't be a huge loss, though - Carlton, Chaney, and White are all more than capable.

If I worried about other fans I would never go to a game. I really like what Coach P is developing at Rice and I am happy to head to the 3rd Ward and watch the game. UH Fans are much better overall than UTEP fans or the University of Entitlement up in Austin. The team needs you to be there to support them.

Tickets still under $10. Let’s catch them looking forward to UVA.

I have attended Rice at LSU(FB), Rice at Texas(FB), Rice at Iowa State(FB), Rice at SMU(FB), Rice at TCU(FB, BSKB, BB), Rice at Baylor(FB, BB), Rice at Nevada-Reno(BSKB). Would never venture to UH.
