Basically, he said the defensive effort was always there, but sometimes you just can't get to where you want to on the defensive end until you get a little experience and games under your feet. So hopefully that 2nd half defensive performance is a harbinger of things to come.

I can't tell if we're getting UH at a good time or the wrong time - maybe a bit of both? They have some injury situations they're dealing with as well, so I'm pretty sure we won't see Mack for them since he didn't play in the exhibition game or last night. They only played 8 folks total in their overtime game.

I think it was also clear last night in the 2nd half that we just had fresher legs than Pepperdine. We didn't have anyone play over 24 min and there wasn't that much of a drop-off when the 2nd team was in, and by 2nd team, I mean a completely different 5. The depth on this team is amazing. If we're going to have any chance at all in the UH game, it will be because of our depth vs their 8.

Looking ahead, think we're going to need to play Fiedler and Poteat at times together on Friday. They're both fine rebounders, but Houston will *destroy* us on the offensive glass if we play 4 guards all game.

The last time I saw a team substitute 5 at a time was Mike Schuler's first year (leading to the clown comment from Abe Lemons and the infamous 10 point play abetted by horrible SWC refs), well other than maybe when the coach was furious and sending a message to the starters. This team really seems to have depth and last night was a great effort. Crossing my fingers for Friday night. Can't stand dealing with low class UH fans or I would go.

What a great start to the season! Makes me sad I can't make the UNO game in 9 days (we are celebrating my wife's bday with her family that night).

Now that we have seen what the team can do, I just don't want us to drop games that we should be winning. This team can be better than that and it needs to be. I'd like to see a strong competitive effort against UH, but really I want us to win all the games that we should win, which is pretty much every other NC game besides UT and UH.

Agreed, but I don't know enough about the Florida tournament to assume we should win it.

Malik Osborne with a big game for FSU. No doubt Pera can recruit, just need to keep them on campus somehow. Maybe allocate more “NIL” resources towards basketball. Just a thought.

Universities may not be directly or indirectly involved in assisting student athletes in finding and obtaining NIL funds. Rice already has student athletes with NIL agreements - acquired on the individuals' own initiatives.

Pera has an eye for talent and compared to previous coaches has been able to keep most key pieces on campus, avoiding the non stop transfers that would put us in re-building mode almost every season in the past. We have a good squad with plenty of experience and enough depth. Not sure we have good PG play, and not a lot of depth down low. But definitely great shooting and with Poteat, two good bigs. Recently signed to an extension IIRC, I hope we can keep Pera around for a long time. Expecting us to win over 20 games this season and make some noise, it will be a big test to see if we can keep him. He's looking like the best hire of the JK era.

This is the reality of the current situation. Applies to basketball as well.
