Meanwhile, when BG had a high penalty game their coach made a big deal about he was going to make sure that did not reoccur.
BG is 2nd worst among MAC teams with 823 yards and 74.8 yards per game. So, I would not hold BG's coach up as a shining example.

I suspect one reason why some coaches don't seem overly concerned about penalty yards is that there doesn't seem to be any significant correlation between penalty yards and records. I.e. in 2021:
The 10 teams with fewest penalty yards average 4.5 wins (6 of 10 have losing records)
The 10 teams with the most penalty yards average 5.8 wing (6 of 10 have winning records)
Here's an example where stats lie. It matters when the penalties happen and if you are good enough to overcome them. Also I suspect (although don't have proof) that some of the top teams that still have lots of penalties get a lot of those at the end of blowout wins when they have their inexperienced players in the game. But, I could be wrong about that.
