You and me both.

And it was funny.

Lol... nah, I just didn't want it to continue/get worse. This isn't the quad. I think the problematic comments are self-evident... and I didn't literally mean to edit your posts, sorry.

If someone wants to continue to talk about it, one of you already referenced the thread (or they can start a new one on the Quad)

Thanks guys

Congratulations to Reggie and his family!

To those of us who don't know, what is his affiliation to athletics?

The most obvious is that his daughter is on the soccer team. Beyond that, I know that the ADs office recruited him pretty hard as a fan and that he has generally been supportive as he could be as Provost. Also, he comes from Berkeley (as a student) and Ga Tech (as faculty) and he was the Faculty Athletics Rep there... and was VP of the ACC.

I understand that Berkeley and GT (and the ACC) aren't Michigan and UT (or the SEC), but they're not bad models for Rice to follow in many regards. They are decidedly better than Yale and the Ivy League.

I've oft-stated as much in regards to Ga Tech many times in the past. Not as much a fan of Berkeley, though I did like Breathed, at least aquatically.

Wonder if our new university president can enourage more games against GA Tech on the gridiron and in basketball and baseball?

edit: Rice is currently 0-2-1 against against GA Tech in football, with first meeting in 1960 and most recent in 1972. (interestingly, Rice is 1-0 all-time against Georgia Bulldogs, to go along with our 3-0 against Alabama!)

Rice is 1-1 all-time in football against Cal-Berkeley, with the two meetings in 1969 and 1970.

In Men's Hoops, Rice has met Ga Tech 15 times total so far, with a series record of 5-10 with first meeting in 1947 and most recent in 2012, a 36-54 loss in the DirecTV Classic in Aneheim, CA under Ben Braun.

Rice is currently 1-2 all-time against Cal-Berkeley with first meeting in 1974 and most recent in 2015, a 65-97 loss at Cal under Mike Rhodes.

In Women's Hoops, Rice has only played GA Tech once, a 52-54 loss in 2019 by the Rice Ladies.

The Lady Owls have played Cal only once, a 65-92 loss in 1986.

Couldn't find the all-tme records in baseball, as they don't initially appear to be available on the Owls website or in the past team fact books, but I remember we played Ga Tech on the diamond at least once in Atlanta.

Here's a list of them all, with links to biographical info on each: https://digitalprojects.rice.edu/wrc/pre...s/provosts

Thanks, Mike. I was unaware of the position when I was a student in the 60's...or maybe just forgetful...

It's not a post that many students would have reason to encounter.

What's going with our future new President? Is he getting involved yet in athletics?

These are unsubstantiated but are from good sources:

1..Posted congratulations on Twitter for Garcia on making Texas Football year-end honors.

2...Met with basketball recruit at the request of the coaching staff...a highly ranked recruit who met with the incoming Prez while on campus for a visit...very positive impression given to the recruit regarding the status of athletics on campus

3..Overruled certain other Rice officers regarding the distribution of a recent large gift...it all goes to athletics as the donor directed with no "misdirection" to other areas on campus...setting the tone for support...I'm not sure about the size of the gift, just that it was "very large".

All good signs

Wow... These are HUGE. I know there is even more that some places do, but this is such a departure from much of the past that I am excited

These are the sorts of things you see from a President who ACTUALLY CARES about athletics.

Indeed! Thanks for the insight. I hope your sources are 100% on all these items!

I hope those "certain other Rice officers" get the message ... or take their rulings to another university.

???

Reggie is not assuming any of the roles of President until July, and has intentionally kept a low profile. He is not meeting with major donor alums who don't know him yet until then. I very much doubt HE intervened on any donor gift giving. Rice financial officers may question certain gifts and put pressure on major donors to not give only to Athletics, but they will not refuse to accept such gifts if the donor is insistent.

As I post above, I very much doubt Reggie intervened-- or was needed to intervene-- on the major donation front.

BTW, Leebron also frequently tweets congratulations to student-athletes who win post-season honors (or any honors for that matter). This is not new with Reggie. I know many of you have an axe to grind with Leebron, but stop the B.S. about him not caring about Rice athletics. As I've said before, he's cared more about Rice Athletics-- and been more involved in not only Rice athletics, but the NCAA as well-- than any Rice president since at least Hackerman 45+ years ago.

LeBron and Hackerman have had similar impact on Rice athletics.

Brings to mind this post I made in 2014 (https://csnbbs.com/thread-630536-post-92...pid9256763)

Quote:That reminded me of President Leebron's visit in February to speak to local alumni. He gave an excellent talk about the state of the university & challenges. Surely it was similar to those given earlier on campus. But aside from saying that he hoped we'd beat A&M in the fall's first football dame, there was no mention of athletics.

So in the Q&A, I asked him about his experiences as a member of the NCAA Div 1 Board of Directors. He said: "I went to my first board meeting recently, and it was not an inspiring experience. We voted to lift the cap on entertainment spending for athletes. The vote was 15-1. I’ll let you figure out who the '1' was. It’s not about the money; it’s about how much money."

Later, I asked him about the chances that university presidents would try to reform the system to something more equitable. He wasn't encouraging. It clearly seemed that this was a battle with such a low chance of winning that it wasn't worth fighting.

Mike, with all due respect, that was almost 8 years ago. He has become much, much more involved in Athletics since then.
