RE: Marshall special Unis this weekend.
Yes. For the game closest to November 14th, there are several ceremonies such as the Memorial Fountain being turned off for the winter until the spring game, when it is turned on again.
We used a "75" decal on one side of our helmet in 2013 @ Tulsa. Tulsa even got permission to move the game back to 6:36PM CST after a one minute of silence (the exact time of the crash). That was one of the classiest moves in college football that I have ever seen, and the players asked Doc to keep the "75" on the helmet for the rest of the season. The 75 refers to the 75 lives that were lost that fateful night.
We started with black jerseys only in 2015. Then we added black pants to our uniform scheme in 2017 and have worn black on black ever since for this game.
A black helmet would complete the look IMHO.
A little back story: There are very few people in Huntington who haven't known someone either directly of indirectly affected by the crash. Keith Morehouse, our TV guy and now WSAZ sports director, lost his father on the plane and many kids lost both parents.
There were some inaccuracies in the movie, but from everyone who lived through this, they said it was done so very well. The movie depicts the firefighters finding a playbook. They actually found a sophomore lineman's wallet. There was an Eastern Airlines plane due in very close to the time of Marshall's plane and initially, they weren't sure which one it was.
The story at the cemetery was true when Jack Lengyel said, "The funerals end today." as well as the gesture. Bobby Bowden's role in allowing our staff to watch tape, etc, was also true. I found a newfound love and respect for him after I learned that.
Some dismiss this as happening over 50 years ago, but I have close friend who were affected therefore, it affects me as well. Our city lost Doctors, Lawyers, prominent businessmen, their wives, administrators, staff, and the team. But for the grace of God, and for some very motivated players, administrators, and coaches, did we persevere.
I highly recommend any visiting fans who would like to learn more to visit:
The Memorial Fountain
The Museum in the IPF
Spring Hill Cemetery (there are signs to the 6 unidentified Sons Of Marshall and Nate Ruffin's grave.
The MU Plane Crash Site (In Kenova, WV)
I will be happy to assist in any way I can as will any other Marshall fan.
We did get beaten by Morehead state in our season opener in 1971, but beating Xavier (there was no 1-AA back then) in our very first home game back not even a year later in 1971....man. I could only imagine the emotion. We were the losingest program in college football from 1970 t0 1984 when we finally had our first winning season since the crash beating ETSU to secure a 6-5 season under Stan Parrish.
I highly recommend "Ashes to Glory" for any interested. There are several documentaries on YouTube.
