RE: 2021-22 women's basketball
Santoro has looked good -- Dingle but a better passer and a much better 3-point shooter. (Dingle still drive like nobody I've ever seen. She's playing for Fordham these days.)

Santoro could be as good as Zerman before she graduates.

I'm not sure the reserve bigs are as shaky as you saw. Dunn is just as freshman. She's made 10 3s and is shooting 39% from distance, which is about 13th in the MAC. She had 10 points against Penn State and has had four rebounds in five different games, playing 16 minutes a game. Her style is a lot like Thall's, and she'll easily step into that role when Thall graduates.

Bexley Wallace, the big post who played about six minutes against Duquesne, was a top 100 recruit out of Pickerington Central. She didn't do much at Penn State and tore her Achilles right before the first game last season. So it was the first time she's played in almost two years. Starkey said her all-around game is good. Nobody is going to push her around inside, but I have major questions about her stamina at her size. She's never been a big scorer.

Lexie Jackson, the 6-4 center who played pretty well at the end of last season, has been sick. As a freshman, she had beaten out Marchese by the last eight games. (Marchese transferred to a D II school. What a bust she was.)

Kent could be a really good team, but we'll see in MAC play. Buffalo also looks really good. They just beat Rhode Island and VCU in back-to-back games and beat Syracuse earlier.

Good to hear Lexie was just sick and not injured. I was wondering about that. I saw that Dunn had the go ahead to shoot 3’s so I figured she had an off night. My guess is Wallace is the next Marchese. Her stats at PSU weren’t good and they were beating her down the court with ease. Thats why I never get too excited about P5 transfers. There’s about 5 reasons they transfer and at least four of them are bad. There are exceptions but they are few and far between.
Watching the game I got the impression Wallace was the first big off the bench but it sounds like we have 2 other options. Makes me feel a little better.

According to a pre-game article in the Record-Courier a couple of hours ago, Wallace is expected to see lots of action against Clarion. She is still recovering from the Achilles injury.

RE: 2021-22 women's basketball
The women host Division II Clarion at 1 p.m. Saturday at the M.A.C. Center. The game is also on ESPN3.

Clarion is 2-5. It's also the school Kent State beat 92-38 in 2018. It lost at St. Bonaventure by 32 points two weeks ago. KSU beat St. Bonaventure by 11.

So it looks quite likely that the Flashes will go 8-1 on the season and equal the second-best start in school history. The best was 11-1 in 2008-09.

I spend some time on the blog looking at how fast-starting teams did inn the rest of the season. The 11-1 team went 8-9 over its remaining games.

The 1978-79 team (8-1 start) lost its next three games in a row but finished 23-8. That season was so long ago that the MAC compete in women's basketball. KSU almost entirely played other Ohio universities and colleges, including Defiance, Denision, Ohio State and Cincinnati.

The 1993-94 team (8-1 start) went 12-8 the rest of the way and finished fourth in the MAC.

What I consider the best teams in school history had mediocre starts.

The 1995-96 team went 24-7 and posted Kent's only win in the NCAA tournament. Amy Sherry, Carrie Templin and Billie Jean Smith-Goldman led that team. It started 3-3.

The 1997-98 team went 18-0 in the MAC (23-7 overall) and lost by three points at Iowa State in the NCAA. Templin, Dawn Zerman and Julie Studer led that team. It started 3-4.

The 1999-2000 team went 25-6, the best record in school history. Zerman and Studer led that team to a 15-1 MAC regular-season championship and the MAC tournament title. That team started 3-4.

The other thing of note about the Clarion game is that sophomore point guard Casey Santoro will be playing against her sister Cory, who is a freshman starter for Clarion.

More details are on the blog at HTTP://wbbFlashes.com.

RE: 2021-22 women's basketball
Casey Santoro had the first triple-double — men's or women's — in KSU history as the Flash women routed Division II Clarion 89-43 Saturday.

Santoro, a sophomore guard, had 16 points, 10 rebounds (she's 5-4) and 10 assists. Six of her assists came in the fourth quarter, and five of them were on 3-point baskets.

She was playing in front of her parents and "half of the city of Bellevue" (as coach Todd Starkey put it, talking about her hometown fans at the game). She was playing against her sister, Cory, who is a freshman starting guard for Clarion. Cory scored three points.

The rest of KSU's scoring came from unusual places. Senior guard Hannah Young had a career-high 16 points and her first double-double in college. Bridget Dunn, a 6-3 freshman forward, had 15 points, 10 of them in the fourth quarter. Senior Annie Pavlansky, who has played sparingly in her four years, had a career-high 10 points.

The win gives the Flashes an 8-1 start, tying for the best in school history. The best start was 11-1 in 2008-09, when the team finished 20-9. The 1978-79 and 1993-94 teams also started 8-1.

The team breaks for exams for 10 days, then returns to the M.A.C. Center to face Florida State of the ACC at 4 p.m. Dec. 21. The Seminoles are 6-2 and have ranked in the top 25 at times this season.

Full story on the Clarion game is on the blog at HTTP://wbbFlashes.com.

I agree. It’s not like Georgia Southern is UConn. They only played their starters about 65 minutes and their second team about 50 minutes. Imagine if they went 100%.

Carver got blown out? No Coolidge, Thorpe or Salami playing due to COVID-19?

+1. I loved White Shadow. With all the stuff that gets redone, I think a new White Shadow would be awesome.

RE: 2021-22 women's basketball
Sporting the best non-conference record in the MAC, the women open conference play against Toledo at 7 Wednesday at the M.A.C. Center. Video of the game is being streamed on the KSU website.

The Flashes haven't played since Dec. 11. THeir Dec. 21 game against Florida State was canceled after a COVID-19 outbreak on the team. The team essentially didn't practice between mid-December and Dec. 26, when team members returned from Christmas.

COVID is clobbering the MAC and college basketball in general. Four of six league games scheduled for Wednesday have been postponed. 65 Division I women's games scheduled for this week had already been postponed or canceled by Tuesday afternoon.

The Flashes are 8-1. Every other MAC team has lost at least three games.

The team has put up a lot of fancy statistics, but the most impressive is 3-point shooting. The team is shooting 42% from that distance, which is third in Division I and 5 percentage points better than any other MAC team. Casey Santoro is third in Division I at 54.55%. The team is seventh in the country in 3-pointers per game (10.2).

Santoro, Katie Shumate and Hannah Young are 1-2-3 in the MAC in 3-point percentage, all averaging more than 50%.

Toledo is 6-3, but the best team the Rockets have beaten is 4-7. Toledo did play well in close losses to Seton Hall and Dayton. The Rockets lead the MAC in scoring defense, allowing 58.4 points per game. KSU is second at 59.4.

Guard Quinesha Locket averages 18.6 points per game, sixth in the MAC.

The game is the second of a doubleheader with the KSU men, who play Central Michigan at 4:30 p.m. One ticket gets you in both games.

Full game preview is on the blog at HTTP://wbbFlashes.com.

RE: 2021-22 women's basketball
Before Wednesday, the women were third in the country in 3-point percentage.

In their 69-60 loss to Toledo, they were 5-of-20 from long distance.

The rest of their shooting wasn't good, either — 22-of-66 overall for the game.

So the Flashes are 0-1 in the MAC with a home loss after an 8-1 non-conference season.

Part of the reason may have been KSU's 18-day layoff since its last game. Half the team was sick with COVID, and the team didn't practice for 10 days. Toledo had played two games last week.

Toledo also has the best defense statistically in the MAC, both in scoring and opponents' field-goal percentage.

Kent led 45-43 going into the fourth quarter and was in the game until the last three minutes, when Toledo fed their 6-5 reserve center, a transfer from Indiana, for three straight layups. The Rockets outscored KSU 26-15 in the quarter.

Hanna Young had her second-straight double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds for the Flashes. Freshman Bridget Dunn had 13 points and three 3-pointers.

But KSU's top four scorers made only 9-of-39 shots and went 0-for-8 on 3s.

The Flashes outrebounded Toledo 43-33 with 19 offensive rebounds. But they had 18 second-chance points to Toledo's 13.

COVID permitting, Kent plays at Western Michigan Saturday. Western's opener at Ball State Wednesday was postponed because of COVID protocols. Three other MAC games also were postponed.

Full story on the Toledo loss is on the blog at HTTP://wbbFlashes.com.

Shot 29% from the floor and only 11/19 from the free throw line. Lost 55-51. Thall did not play. I don’t know why as I missed the beginning of the game. Our shooting has just disintegrated the last 2 or 3 games. Clare Kelly shot well and scored 17 but that was about it.

RE: 2021-22 women's basketball
Kent State made 44% of its shots and 42% of its 3-pointers in the non-conference season.

In its two MAC games, the Flashes have shot 29% from the field and 28% from 3-point distance.

They missed from everywhere in Saturday's 55-51 loss, making only 7-of-18 layups. Casey Santoro and Katie Shumate, the team's leading scorers, went 3-of-23 shooting.

Kent was outscored 34-14 in the paint.

Fifty-one points were the fewest Kent has scored this season. A week ago, they were averaging 77.8.

Thall was out "for medical reasons," coach Todd Starkey said. (He doesn't like to talk about individual players who have COVID.) Before Saturday, Thall had started 83 straight games every one since she arrived on campus.

But Western was missing one of its best players, too — 6-2 sophomore Taylor Williams. She made the MAC all-freshman team last year and is averaging 13.4 points and 9.0 rebounds this season.

Western Michigan scored the first nine points of the game and led 13-2, but KSU tied the game 16-16 in the second quarter. After that, neither team led by more than four points. The Flashes took a 51-50 with 36 seconds left, but Western hit a 3-point basket with 16 seconds left.

Kelly hadn't scored more than five points in KSU's 10 other games. She started 13 games last season but has lost that role to Hannah Young. She averaged eight points a game in 2020-21 and scored 27 against Toledo that season.

Nila Blackford had 10 points and a season-high 15 rebounds.
