Nice bounce back win against Penn St. Finishing 3rd in that tournament was nothing to sneeze at. Pretty optimistic at this point.

RE: 2021-22 women's basketball
The 81-74 win, like KSU's 75-69 win over UCLA Friday, was no fluke at all. It was hard fought, but Flashes led for 37 minutes. They outrebounded taller Penn State 46-23 and 17-3 on offensive boards.

Nila Blackford and Lindsey Thall both had double-doubles. Blackford had 13 points and 14 rebounds. Thall had 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Thall became the 23rd KSU player to score over 1,000 points with a foul shot in the fourth quarter.

Katie Shumate had 17 points Casey Santoro 15 and Bridget Dunn 10 for the Flashes. Hannah Young just missed double figures with nine points and had eight rebounds.

KSU's 5-1 start is its best since 2010. The Flashes started 6-0 that season, including a win over the PAC 12's Washington. That team finished 20-10. KSU's record is also the best in the MAC so far this season. As far as I know only Buffalo has beaten a Poser 5 school (Syracuse).

Full game story with quotes coach Todd Starkey, Thall, Blackford and Santoro is on the blog at http://wbbFlashes.com.

RE: 2021-22 women's basketball
After a most successful Florida tournament, the Kent State women's basketball team returns to action Friday at St. Bonaventure.

Both teams are 5-1, but KSU has played a considerably stronger schedule. The Flashes beat two Power 5 teams — UCLA and Penn State – at the Gulf Coast Showcase last weekend. St. Bonaventure's best win has come against 3-3 Robert Morris of the Horizon League. The game starts at 7 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.

Four Kent State players average at least 10 points a game, and two more average more than six. Senior Lindsey Thall averages 16.3 points a game and has made 48.6% of her 3-point shots. She scored the 1,000th point of her career and made the all-tournament team in Florida. Casey Santoro, who has come off the bench in all six KSU games, averages 15.0, Katie Shumate averages 13.0 and Nila Blackford 10.0. Blackford, who had her first double-double of the season Sunday, leads KSU in rebounding at 8.3 per game.

St. Bonaventure is led by 5-8 senior guard Asianae Johnson, an all-Atlantic 10 third-team member last season. She averages 15 points and 3.5 assists. I'yanna Lops, a 6-3 junior forward, leads the Bonnies in rebounding, averaging 8.2 per game.

So far Kent State (5-1) has the best record in the MAC against one of the toughest schedules. (Buffalo (4-2), which has played No. 1 South Carolina, has a slightly tougher rated schedule.) If things continue to develop well, this could be one of the best teams in school history.

RE: 2021-22 women's basketball
The women won at St. Bonaventure 64-53.

It's not as sexy as beating UCLA or Penn State, but it does give KSU a 6-1 start on the season, its best since 2010. St. Bonaventure is 5-2, though Kent is clearly the best team it has played this season.

Kent's 64 points were the most any team has scored against the Bonnies this season.

For the second game in a row, the Flashes had an overwhelming advantage in offensive rebounding. It was 14-3 Friday. Against Penn State Sunday, it was 17-2. KSU outscored St. Bonaventure 18-5 on second-chance points, more than its margin of victory.

The Flashes had three players with at least eight rebounds. 5-10 senior guard Hannah Young led with nine while Lindsey Thall and Nila Blackford had eight.

Blackford scored 16 points, her most of the season, in just 24 minutes. Thall, KSU's leading scorer going into the game, had just three points.

Katie Shumate led the Flashes with 19 points and made 3-of-5 three-point shots. On the season, she's made 57% of her 3-pointers.

RE: 2021-22 women's basketball
I don't watch a lot of women's basketball but in the ecu-nc central game central went scoreless until the 9:26 mark of the second quarter. They finally scored on a free throw and the first fg at 7:54. Is this a normal occurrence or is it bizarre?

RE: 2021-22 women's basketball
It's bizarre.

Most women's teams average in the 60-point range. KSU averages about 75 so far.

There are scoring droughts, but no more than the men, I think.

RE: 2021-22 women's basketball
I would say what you saw was weird. I think there is a greater gap between the best and worst women's teams then on the mens side but that gap has closed tremendously from 1990 to the present. Coaching is so much better and there are a lot more high school players to recruit. Shooting %’s are a bit lower (gotta be a difference in 6’10” post player and a 6’2” post player). But the gap keeps closing.

RE: 2021-22 women's basketball
To put more perspective into it at halftime NCC was shooting 13% and ecu was at 35%, there was a total of 46 points with 44 missed shots and 32 turnovers. I was looking for something to watch before the men's team tipped off and saw the score was 27-0. I assumed espn screwed up so I clicked on it to see what the score actually was and it was correct. Then I couldn't turn it off because it looked like a comedy sketch show. The ball was refusing to go in the hoop and both teams were just staring at the hoop after each miss.

Ok i thought you meant neither team had scored (didn’t read it correctly). I’d say thats one of the mismatches I was talking about. There are some very bad teams especially in the the lower conferences like the MEAC. ECUs 35%can happen in any game. The 13% is unusual but will happen in these mismatches. I think the women still have trouble supplying enough players for 350+ Division I teams.

RE: 2021-22 women's basketball
I agree with Burden. The weakest women’s teams are comparatively weaker than the weakest men’s teams. And we’ve really yet to have seen a real Cinderella team in the women’s final four.

But men have horrible shooting streaks, too — like the start of KSU’s men’s game Monday.

Or remember when probably the second best KSU team n history — the one with Q in 2008or so — score only about 18 points in the first half on the NCAA first round?

RE: 2021-22 women's basketball
I recall when high school girls' basketball first came to Ohio about 50 years ago. You had teams with NO girls who had a clue as to how to play the game going up against teams that had a couple or three who did. There was no shortage of horrifically lopsided scores. It has gotten better over the years at the high school and collegiate level, but the gap is still greater than with the men.

RE: 2021-22 women's basketball
The women are home Wednesday against Duquesne.

The game starts at 7 p.m. at the M.A.C.C. It's also on ESPN+.

The team is definitely worth watching in person. They're off to a 6-1 start, tied for fourth-best in school history, rank 17th in the latest Mid-Major Top 25 and rank sixth in Division I in 3-point percentage at 41.4%.

They're fourth in the MAC in scoring (76.6 points per game) and second in scoring defense (60.0.) They're well ahead of the rest of the league in rebounding margin (+10.1).

Four Flashes average in double figures. Katie Shumate is third in the MAC in shooting percentage (53.6) and third in 3-point percentage (57.1). Five KSU players are in the MAC's top 15 in 3-point percentage.

Duquesne is 4-5 and beat Akron 58-47 Nov. 23. Akron is 3-3 so far this season.

The Dukes start four guards and a 6-4 center, but its top rebounders are two guards.

Full preview is on the blog at HTTP://wbbFlashes.com.

Also in the post is an update on the team's academics. KSU had a team GPA of 3.66 last year, which ranked 16th of about 325 Division I teams. (The number was lower last year because of COVID.)

RE: 2021-22 women's basketball
The women beat Duquesne 71-66 to extend their fourth-best start to a season in school history.

The Flashes are 7-1 and should tie the second-best start Sunday when they host Division II Clarion. KSU's best start was 11-1 in 2010-11, though that team finished 20-11 and 8-8 in the MAC.

Katie Shumate, Casey Santoro and Lindsey Thall all shot very well to lead the Flashes. Shumate had 21 points on 7-for-14 shooting (3-of-6 on 3-pointers), Santoro had 19 on 6-of-9 shooting and 4-of-5 3-pointers, and Thall 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting (3-of-6 3-pointers. Thall also had nine rebounds.

KSU led by 13 in the third quarter, but Duquesne closed it to one point twice and two points four times in the last 4:30.

Saturday's Clarion game is at 2 p.m. in the M.A.C. Center.

Full game story, with quotes from coach Todd Starkey, Santoro and Shumate is on the blog at HTTP://wbbFlashes.com.

Saw the team for the first time and was pretty happy. Santoro is a nice improvement at the point. Seems to be a scorer. That always helps. Blackford had a tough game (2 for 8 from the free throw line, rest of the team was 10/10). There appears to be one big weakness though. If Thall or Blackford get hurt or get in foul trouble we could have a problem. Our back up bigs struggled.
